can we just talk about how cool Mom Hargreeves is?
Like she has to be one of my favorite characters in the comics, in the show she is a robot that looks exactly like a human but acts within the areas her programming (she does show some emotion here or there though), her family, the Hargreeves siblings know that she’s just a robot designed to care for them yet they treat her sort of as a mother (especially Diego).
I feel like it’s the opposite in the comics, she looks like an obvious robot (no arms and see through chest showing organs) yet she behaves human and has emotions. But the siblings treat her like just a robot. Diego calling her fake, Five dismissing, or Allison just although not being as harsh it’s quite shown that she isn’t close to Mom as well. And well Mom does notice all that and over the years seems to be quite fed up with the constant dismissal of them. The conversation with her and Vanya may have only been two pages long but shows a lot about Moms feelings towards the umbrella academy.
“I know what it’s like to feel unloved. I was born as an object and never treated anything but.”
Mom obviously wants to be treated like a real person, an equal but the umbrella family just can’t see it like that. So puts her attention into the sparrow family, so far in issue one and two of Plan B the sparrows don’t treat her like an object but sort of as an authority figure, as shown in the flashbacks with flight 636. When they explode the plane monocle stands there dumbfounded and maybe even a bit scared, but Mom. She knows exactly what to say. And she enjoys it.
She’s an android that was created from industrial waste to raise 7 children with superpowers and never treated more than a vacuum cleaner that occasionally bakes cookies (with anise). And she hates it, and that’s why I love her so much.
