Into the Void

It all started in the past, the year was 2015. A new disease rose out of nowhere. They called it the neo-plague on the internet, but scientist concluded that it was an advanced version of cancer, people would develop cancerous tumors around their brains. In just that a year two percent of the world’s population died off. A new vaccine was designed, the properties that were in the vaccine were unknown.

However that mattered none when people saw that the vaccine had began to work. Even on people who were already dying from this cancer. By the end of the year nearly all of the children born were vaccinated. Elijah was one of those children. Fast forward to 2030, the vaccine and 2015 was just another forgotten year in the history books.

If Only

 I never thought I would be in this predicament once again, sitting on my bed listening to sad ass music and wondering where I went wrong. Relationships have always brought out my weaker side and I never understood why. I was a force to be reckon with in everyday life with my fierce tongue, but it seems like when I’m romantic with someone I turn into mush. The latest culprit, Donavan, he was so smooth in everything that he did and I really thought he was the one. We were together for two years and we just seemed so in sync, he supported all my dreams and aspirations. I never thought I’d see the day when I’d wake up without him lying next to me or him calling saying “Good Morning Baby Girl have a great day”, it’s like I am in an internal darkness. Just as I felt a new batch of tears coming on from reminiscing my phone rang beside me. “Hey Ashlee”, I greet my best friend of 20 years, “What happen this time Ari? Why are you listening to that depressing ass music?” I couldn't even being to explain to her what was wrong. She had told me months ago to leave Donavan alone when I caught him in bed with some woman that works in his office, but he promised it was a onetime thing and it'll never happen again. How stupid could I get? “Oh Ash, you were right. Donavan left me for some woman at his job, he got her pregnant!” I sobbed into the phone to my best friend. “Oh God! That fucking asshole! I am on my way over Ari, don’t worry honey, we’ll get through this” Ashlee promised. This is why she’s my best friend, she is always there for me whenever I needed her.

           After I hung up the phone I decided I needed to clean myself and my apartment, for that matter. I took a quick shower to try to wash away the sorrow and depression and was standing in front of my closet when I heard my phone message alert going off:

LOSER: Hey baby I’m sorry about how things went down between us, let me come over and make it up to you. I don’t even love her like I love you, plus I won’t know if the baby is mines until its born.

ME: Goodbye Donavan, you made it perfectly clear that you’d rather start a life with Alison and raise your child in a two parent household, plus you said I was getting boring anyway. Here’s your out Donovan, good bye.

           It felt so good to finally tell Donavan where he could shove it. I had truly been the definition of a good woman to that man and all he did was constantly lie and cheat. I even forgave him when he caused me to lose our baby, at the thought of that I got misty eyed and instantly began to think of something else. I stared blankly at my closet and just reminisced and thought about what the last two years of my life had been like. I met Donavan my junior year of college, I was twenty and thought I knew the world and I could conquer any and everything. Boy was a wrong, he came in and swept me off my feet and we began this whirlwind romance. Before I knew it two year had passed and on the night I expected an engagement, I instead got broken up with. I had chalked his moodiness and distance for his nervousness at proposing, but really he was looking for the proper way to break up with me.

           *BANG BANG BANG* I am knocked out of my trance by someone banging on my door, I knew it couldn’t be anyone but Ashlee. When I opened the door she attacked me with hugs and a bunch of “Are you okays”, I love my best friend but sometimes she can be really dramatic. “I would be 10x better if I could possibly breathe.” I choked out. “Oh, sorry” she sheepishly mumbled. It was at this moment that my towel decided to fall and I realized I needed to get dressed. After getting her a glass of wine, and some water for myself we migrated to my bedroom so I could get dressed and fill her in on my ever changing love life. “So, tell what the jack ass did this time” she spat out. “Oh Ash, he left me. He was screwing this bimbo at his job name Alison and now she’s pregnant, and all of a sudden he wants to be this family man. He said that he had to leave me alone so he can focus on his family! How can he say that to me of all people! He’s the reason my baby is gone!” My voiced cracked at the mention of the last part, like it always does whenever I think of my angel. “Hey, stop it.” Ashlee said as she hugged reassuring me. “I’m okay.” I said. So what do you want to do tonight?” she asked. “I am pretty much up for everything except clubbing.” I said as I continue to rummage through my closet. “We can go see Beyond the Lights, I heard that was a really good movie.” Ashlee offered. “Sounds good to me, let me just throw something on.” I decided so we were probably going out to a movie and probably dinner I could wear a short sleeved maxi dress with some nude flat sandals, a jean jacket, and my brown tote bag. I kept my makeup to a minimum, just eyeliner, mascara, and some lip gloss. After that I put my hair up into a top knot bun and I was ready to go. I turned to face Ashlee and I asked “How do I look?” she so faithfully replied “Amazing as usual, now come on I wanna make the 7:15 showing of the movie.” “Whose car you wanna take? Yours or mines?” I asked that question as more of a joke, I had a little green beetle while she had a monster truck that was a gas guzzler. “Bitch! Stop playing, you know we taking your car!” I laughed and said “okay cool lets go.”

Just as I was about to leave my phone began to rang. “Hello?” for a while no one responded I just heard crying and stiffing “Arianna? This is Alison, Donavan’s fiancée. I don’t know if you know but we are engaged and with child and I would appreciate if you never contacted him again.” Instantly my vision went blurred, ENGAGED! I had been with this man for two fucking years and could barely get a key to his house and this bitch had been had been around for 2 hot seconds and was his sideline was now engaged to him and married. “Listen here Alison” I said her name with so much vehement “I don’t know what the fuck he’s been telling you but we aren’t together. We broke up this morning. However about 45 minutes ago he tried to get that told thing back if you catch my drift.” I laughed. “I no longer want or desire him, he’s a no life asshole. The same way he cheated on and left me for the next bitch is the same he’s gonna do you. Don’t think that baby is gonna make him change either. Lose my number.” I said as I hung up. “What was that about?” Ashlee asked with a confused expression on her face. “Donavan’s little mistress turned FIANCEE decided to called and tell me to stay away from her man.” I said with a bit of laughter in my voice. Honestly right now all I could do was laugh. This shit was out of control and that bimbo was dumber than she looked if she thought I wanted Donavan back after all this shit he put me through. Nope she could have him, he was officially all hers. “Ari-” Ashlee started, “Ash, stop, I’m good. Donavan and Alison can have happy ever after with their baby in tow, I am done with Donavan.

*TWO HOURS LATER*

        “Omg that movie was so amazing!” Ashlee exclaimed. She just kept praising the movie as we were walking out of the movie theater. “I agree it was amazing, I wish I could find me a man like Kaz” I admitted. “Ari don’t you think you should give relationships a rest for a while. They never seem to work out in your favor honey.” Ashlee observed. “Ummm no! Love is such a beautiful thing and I am so in love with the idea! Ash I know I have had so many Mr. Wrongs but they are only preparing me for the right man to come down and swoop me and love me.” I preached to. “Okay Ari, I love you but girl you have some crazy ass ideals.” She chuckled and she walked toward the car. We had decided to go to the Applebee, I needed comfort food right now. “Hi, welcome to Applebees, table for two? There’s a 10 minute wait, is that okay?” the Applebee waiter asked us depressingly like I picked this profession for. “No, that fine, smile honey, it can’t be that bad.” I replied to her. Less than two minutes later she told me that our table was ready and walked us over to our table, on the way over my eyes met the eyes of a complete stranger. His eyes where so captivating, I got caught in a trance for a moment. “Ari! Earth to Ari!” Ashlee pretty much yelled at me. “Uh! Yea? What’s up?” I asked. “I have been talking to you for like 5 minutes and you have just been staring blankly.” “Oh, sorry Ash what’s up?” “I said did you wanna go to Nordstrom’s in the morning, they are having a sale and I just can’t miss it.” “Sure” I replied. Just as I was replying I felt a dark shadow come over me. I looked up into those captivating green eyes again. “Hi” I answered breathlessly. “Hello, you do know me but I couldn’t dare leave without at least saying hello.” He said. “Well, ummm hello I guess.” I laughed nervously. “I know this is a long shot and you probably is already spoken for but is there any chance I can have your number?” He asked. “Umm sure I guess its 214-726-8927, my name is Ari” I answered. “Well look forward to a call tonight, Ari” he said sexily. When he walked away he Ashlee instantly asked “What the hell was THAT?” and I honestly answered “I don’t know.”

 I checked my phone for the millionth time. It was 11:30 at night and I still hadn’t heard a peep from Shay. I already knew what that meant; she is probably in a club right now letting some bitch grind up on her, getting drunk, and probably whispering sweet nothing’s in the girl’s ear to make her end up sleeping with her. I was so tired, tired of the lies, tired of the cheating, tired of the fighting, just outright tired. I was done with Shay this time and there is nothing that she say to make me stay with her lying ass. I got up and went into the kitchen and made myself a dirty martini with extra vodka, and called Shay once more. I wasn’t even all that mad that I was sent to voicemail once again, this is Shay being Shay.

           I am Vanity Williams, I can have whoever I wanted, yet I settled for Shay. Don’t get me wrong Shay was physically everything I wanted in a girl, 5’11, muscles in all the right places but not too many to take away from her girlish curves, long pretty hair, an amazing smile and laugh, she had the most unique and beautiful features due to her having a Pakistani father and black mother. I swear I love her, even though she is the biggest hoe I ever met. She makes me smile and laugh more than any other girl I have ever been with. She makes feel so special and so good about myself, but on that same token she surly knows how to break me down. The constant lying and cheating is really taking a toll on me.

           I got up and lit candles all around my living room and cut the lights off. I hooked up my phone to my dock stationed and switched Jazmine Sullivan new album Reality Show I automatically switched to “Forever Don’t Last Always” and just listened to that on repeat while drinking my drink. Tears silently flowed down my face as I sat and thought why. I wasn’t perfect by a long shot, but I damn well tried for her, she never took a second to notice.

           I was so caught up in the song that I didn’t hear the door knob turning. “Why the fuck it’s so dark? And why you crying?” She asked. I ignored her question and instead asked “Where have you been Shay?” “Maaaaan not this again tonight. I was out with Trey, we had a few drinks, laughed and partied that’s it.” She lied. “Shay why the fuck you lie so fucking much! I know you were with another bitch, so you might as well tell me who the fuck she is!” I said. “Why you so insecure Van? Damn a nigga can’t go out without you instantly assuming I am with another bitch. I WAS WITH TREY!” She yelled. “I am sure you went to the club with Trey but that sure as hell isn’t who you was with AT the club!” I yelled. “Yo I can’t with you tonight. Good night Van, we can talk in the morning when you are more stable. You’ve been drinking and we both know how you get when you’ve been drinking.” She sighed. “I FUCKING HATE YOU SHAY! I WISH A NEVER MET YOU!” I screamed at her through my tears. “Yea yea I know Van, she hate me, I’m not shit, she wish you never met, I don’t deserve. I have heard it ALL before. I am going to bed, don’t forget to blow out the candles.” She said as she walked into the bedroom. I just sat on my couch and stared off into a daze, maybe I should give Shay a dose of her own medicine. Why should I be home alone on another Saturday night? She can do it so will I. With that resolve in mind, I went into our bedroom and stripped down to my bra and panties and got in bed.

           I felt Shay kissing on my shoulders and I instantly knew what that meant, Shay wanted some pussy and I was not going to deny her.
