Surprised, Avery looks up at the door to the changing room, lifting his head from its bowed position as he locates the owner of the voice. Breathing uneven, he swallows tightly and tries to straighten his posture, his back cracking as he does so, trying to put on a facade again.

“What…what do you mean?” He asks, mouth dry.

Forcing a smile, he runs a hand through his hair and watches Vincent, unsure as to what action his friend will take next.

“I wouldn’t dream of leaving you hanging,” Vincent grins. “If we cause any mayhem, we do it together. How does that sound?”

He feels relieved to have bought a laugh forth from Avery. Even if it is a small one. The smile on his face stick yet he knows better than to ask if the other is feeling any better. It’s a question he whole heartily wants to avoid. Vincent lets the conversation drift into silence. Sometimes just sitting together might just be remedy enough.

Avery looks up at Vincent, once more struck by how handsome his friend his, and how caring he is...nobody had ever shown the same worry for him, barring maybe his parents when they were still around. Staring now, he can't help but admire the smile doening his friend's face, feeling calmer, more reassured now.

"That sounds good...very good." He manages to say, leaning his head against Vincent's shoulder properly, "I'm so glad to know you, Vincent."

"Strange place to fall asleep."

“Sure is.” Vincent laughs, sleepiness still brimming in his voice. Stretched out underneath the coffee table, had been a thing of his childhood. He used to lay there and hide from his father, waiting impatiently to jump out and scare him. Though, that had not been the case right now. Vincent was simply too tired to make it to his bedroom.

He runs a hand over his brows before glancing out from underneath to Avery.

Vincent raises a hand, a sleepy smile on his face. “How about you come join me in my strange place to sleep? I could use some warmth.”

“I don’t mind it. Frankly, I love the smell of the firehouse and I would have fallen asleep far faster had you went to the shower.” Vincent clarifies with a quiet laugh. “Jesus, You must be wore out and here I am asking you to sleep on the floor…under a table. I swear sometimes I don’t use my noggin.”

He shakes his head, raising it ever so slightly, careful to not bump it. “Do you want to get in the bed…at least be somewhat comfortable?”

With his head raised he can see Avery’s face, just how tired he is. Vincent takes the opportunity to very gently brush his lips against the other’s.

Avery sighs softly at the feeling of Vincent's lips against his, awkwardly moving to press himself closer, his arm around the other firefighter tightening slightly. He'll never get tired of kissing this man, relishing the knowledge that he actually is, that he's not being pushed away as he feared he might've been. Its all he can do not to pull Vincent on top of him to hold him much closer, though he knows the table is in the way, so it'd be impractical.

When he pulls back again, he stares down happily at the man beside him.

"I don't mind. I'm just happy lying with you." He laughs softly, feel his cheeks colour with light embarrassment, "Really? You like the smell of sweat and smoke?"

Avery teases Vincent, knowing full well he also highly enjoys the smell - it always brings a sense of calm familiarity to him, just as the smell of military bunker will always bring sense of panic and dread.

Sharing a hotel room

Lily looked at the other man " hey I just heard that your flight got cancelled too " she said looking to the man who had just been rejected by the hotel " Im travelling alone , if you wanted you could share a room with me ' lily offered and then paused .

"I'm Lily by the way , I got the last room " she explained .

She smiled and nodded " hmmmm so what do you do for a living then ?" She asked him curiously as she grabbed her bag and knelt in the ground to pull out things she would need throughout the night .

"Me? I'm a firefighter nowadays. Used to be in the forces, though." He sits on the edge of the bed, "How about you?"

Avery watches as she moves around, trying to ignore how much his body craved sleep and rest, knowing he should eat something before he eventually did cave in to the urges.

She smiled and looked at the other " hmmm iknee it, I knew you were forces of some kind ' she said softly and looked at the other with a bright smile . .

"me , well , me I'm ex British army , and im currently a surgeon "'she said with a smile

She gave a yawn and hummed " hmmm I'm stuck I need food .. but I need sleep .... I don't know which to do " she said with a questioning look .

"That obvious, huh?" Avery rubs the back of his neck, sheepish at his blatant military-born behaviour, though his curiosity piques at her response, "You were forces, too? Which division?"

He watches her yawn, trying to fight back his own now, pressing a hand to his jaw. He contemplates her query, acknowledging his own hunger and fatigue.

"Maybe we could order some food to the room? That way if we get tired, we can just go right to bed." He grins.

Lily nodded " the training to have perfect posture never leaves you , along with the slightly troubled look in a person's eye " she said with a shrug . Talking more about her self than anything .

"hmmm British medical " she said simply " I spent most my time patching people up rather than fighting, but I did a lot of field missions with exploration units and such " she explained .

" hmmm that's an excellent idea , I'll have a burger " she said as she grabbed her Pjammas " could you order I'm gonna go for a shower "

Avery nods, only somewhat surpsied by her peceptiveness.

"You're not wrong, I guess." He can often tell in others whether or not they had been military, but sometimes it slips him.

"Still an important part of the team, though." He says, going to the phone in the room as she starts to move, mentally debating what to have himself, "Any drinks?"

"hmmm are you drinking ? " She asked him " I'll definitely have a coke , but if your drinking drinking I'll have a double gin and lemonade" she said with a smile as she headed to the bathroom . Shutting the door over and starting the shower .

Avery grins as she tells him her order, picking up the phone to dial the front desk. Ordering quickly, he puts the phone back down and start a to root through his bag, trying to find a more comfortable shirt to wear.

Quick to do so, he changes into the shirt and locates a pair of more comfortable trousers, too, pulling them on.

Lily washed her hair out and took her time knowing it would be a while before their order arrives . She let the warm water cascade over her . Before she got out and dried her self off and put on he Pjammas . She towel dried her hair and then brushed it out . She would deal with it come morning . She walked out the bathroom and smiled " hey how are you ?, Get everything ordered ?" She asked him

"Hey! Everything's good, I've ordered. Should he here in about twenty minutes or so." He tells her, putting down the book he was reading, "How's the shower?"

He mentally debates having one of his own, knowing the scent of the airport likely clings to him, but he finds he's too tired to do it. Somehow, he knows he's entirely likely to fall asleep in the shower.

She sat on the bed crossedlegged with a bright smile "ohhh fantastic thanks for ordering " she said brightly .

" enm the shower is surprisingly good, I just feel so good and relaxed and happy " she hummed after the shower . She genuinely did feel more relaxed and happy .

He laughs a little, grinning.

"Sounds great, maybe I'll try it in the morning." He says, stretching out again as his muscles ache a little, tense from the work he had to do before he came to the airport, "For now, I'll probably fall asleep if I get into it."

She hummed and nodded " yeah , that's probably wise and I was close ." she agreed " so tell me more about you " she said softly and looked at the other wanting to know more about her

He looks surprised for a moment, before the expression morphs into thoughtfulness, thinking over what to say.

"Well...I grew up in Austria, got relatively decent grades at school. I joined the military when I was 18 and was stationed in the UK, then got sent to Afghanistan for five years. Got discharged and came to New York to train as a firefighter, which is where I am now." Avery shrugs, laughing sheepishly, "There's not much more. How about you?"

She smiled and nodded " hm that's still some life and Afghan is a shit hole " she said simply with a shrug giving a quick thought about what to say .

" hmm grew up in Scotland , was born in a military family, went to military school decided I wanted to be a medic surgeon , so got really good grades , joins as soon as I could , did several tours of various shit holes , got blown up , now I'm a truma surgeon , right now I'm moving between hospitals and teaching them to be better and quicker . " She explained and rolled up her long pjamma trousers to show him her fake leg

Avery's eyes flick to the prosthetic curiously, not shocked by the sight as he knows people often are if not accustomed to seeing false appendages. In his life, he'd seen far too many.

"Wow, sounds like a busy life. How do you make time for it all?" He laughs, leaning back on his hands, head tilted.

He’s more surprised at the choice of sleeping place, though as he thinks this he vaguely remember Vincent saying something about it before.

Placing down his bag and coat, he crouches by Vincent, taking his hand.

“Sure, I could do with some warmth myself.” He agrees, looking at how he’ll maneuver himself into the space, a habit picked up in his firefighting endeavours.

Laying down, he shuffles in until he’s beside Vincent, pressed tightly against the famiair body, feeling the similarly familiar rush of affection as they slot together.

Vincent makes as much room as he can, so that Avery is comfortable despite the table legs that might press into him. He moves ever so slowly, draping an arm over Avery’s torso, and resting his cheek against the other’s shoulder Vincent still finds the need to ask, his eyes tiredly finding Avery’s face. “Is this okay?”

Rather than drifting back into sleep immediately, Vincent relishes in the closeness. The seemingly intimate thought of sleeping side by side….even if it is under the table. All the sleepy thoughts that should be sealed behind closed lips, bubble out ever so slowly.

“I like being this close to you, Avery. I mean…I was trying to stay up till you got here because I just wanted to see you but damn you took so long.”

Avery’s heart seems to swell as Vincent rests his head on his shoulder, his arm instinctively moving to wrap around the other’s shoulders and pull him closer. He still can’t believe this sort of thing actually happens, that he’s found someone to do this sort of thing with after all the years of loneliness.

He looks down at Vincent when he speaks.

“Of course it’s ok.” He smiles, giving him a soft squeeze.

Staring down at the man lying in his arm, Avery can’t help but admire him, eyes roaming over the handsome expanse of the firefighter’s face. Somewhere inside him, the urge to kiss Vincent arises, but he pushes it away, knowing he’ll likely bang his head if he tries anything like that. Instead, he settles for idly tracing patterns into the other’s back with his fingers, listening to him speak, warmth filling him again.

“I like having you this close.” Avery murmurs back, chuckling softly, “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting. I wanted to get home to you as soon as I could.”

Vincent finds it easier to slip his eyes shut, to just focus on the warmth, the body beside him. As Avery’s arm guides him closer, he moves his head to better rest against the other’s chest. Sleeping on the floor has never been comfortable to Vincent, but all of a sudden it’s more than manageable.

He hums, a playfulness seeping into his tired voice. The soft touches to his back is ever so slowly guiding him back into sleep. “Good, I don’t want you to think I’m too needy all of a sudden.”

But he was and there was a guarantee, knowing how death-defying their line of work was that he always would be needy for Avery’s touch at the end of the day. A sort of conformation they had made it.

He feels Avery’s laugh and a deep smile seeps into his face. “Don’t be sorry. I’m just glad your here now.” A soft laugh rumbles Vincent’s chest after he takes in a deep breath. “You smell like the firehouse. Speaking of that, how was it? I think next time, I’ll show up to get on your nerves a bit.”

"Nah, not at all." Avery reassures Vincent, laying his free hand on his stomach, replacing with the other firefighter on his chest.

He smiles at the observations, blushing slightly as he realises he must reek incredibly badly.

"Yeah, sorry, I should've showered when I got in. You just looked too comfortable." He teases, "The firehouse is both quieter and absolute mayhem without you there. Some probies decided to tangle the hoses during a practice drill, so we spent an hour trying to fix those, then we were on call nearly every moment after."

Lily nodded " the training to have perfect posture never leaves you , along with the slightly troubled look in a person's eye " she said with a shrug . Talking more about her self than anything .

"hmmm British medical " she said simply " I spent most my time patching people up rather than fighting, but I did a lot of field missions with exploration units and such " she explained .

" hmmm that's an excellent idea , I'll have a burger " she said as she grabbed her Pjammas " could you order I'm gonna go for a shower "

Avery nods, only somewhat surpsied by her peceptiveness.

"You're not wrong, I guess." He can often tell in others whether or not they had been military, but sometimes it slips him.

"Still an important part of the team, though." He says, going to the phone in the room as she starts to move, mentally debating what to have himself, "Any drinks?"

"hmmm are you drinking ? " She asked him " I'll definitely have a coke , but if your drinking drinking I'll have a double gin and lemonade" she said with a smile as she headed to the bathroom . Shutting the door over and starting the shower .

Avery grins as she tells him her order, picking up the phone to dial the front desk. Ordering quickly, he puts the phone back down and start a to root through his bag, trying to find a more comfortable shirt to wear.

Quick to do so, he changes into the shirt and locates a pair of more comfortable trousers, too, pulling them on.

“Sure is.” Vincent laughs, sleepiness still brimming in his voice. Stretched out underneath the coffee table, had been a thing of his childhood. He used to lay there and hide from his father, waiting impatiently to jump out and scare him. Though, that had not been the case right now. Vincent was simply too tired to make it to his bedroom.

He runs a hand over his brows before glancing out from underneath to Avery.

Vincent raises a hand, a sleepy smile on his face. “How about you come join me in my strange place to sleep? I could use some warmth.”

Avery smiles down at Vincent, tilting his head to properly look him in the eye. He’d only just got back from work and hadn’t been expecting to find the other firefighter asleep at all, yet he’s not surprised at the occurrence. He’s more surprised at the choice of sleeping place, though as he thinks this he vaguely remember Vincent saying something about it before.

Placing down his bag and coat, he crouches by Vincent, taking his hand.

“Sure, I could do with some warmth myself.” He agrees, looking at how he’ll maneuver himself into the space, a habit picked up in his firefighting endeavours.

Laying down, he shuffles in until he’s beside Vincent, pressed tightly against the famiair body, feeling the similarly familiar rush of affection as they slot together.

Vincent makes as much room as he can, so that Avery is comfortable despite the table legs that might press into him. He moves ever so slowly, draping an arm over Avery’s torso, and resting his cheek against the other’s shoulder Vincent still finds the need to ask, his eyes tiredly finding Avery’s face. “Is this okay?”

Rather than drifting back into sleep immediately, Vincent relishes in the closeness. The seemingly intimate thought of sleeping side by side….even if it is under the table. All the sleepy thoughts that should be sealed behind closed lips, bubble out ever so slowly.

“I like being this close to you, Avery. I mean…I was trying to stay up till you got here because I just wanted to see you but damn you took so long.”

Avery's heart seems to swell as Vincent rests his head on his shoulder, his arm instinctively moving to wrap around the other's shoulders and pull him closer. He still can't believe this sort of thing actually happens, that he's found someone to do this sort of thing with after all the years of loneliness.

He looks down at Vincent when he speaks.

"Of course it's ok." He smiles, giving him a soft squeeze.

Staring down at the man lying in his arm, Avery can't help but admire him, eyes roaming over the handsome expanse of the firefighter's face. Somewhere inside him, the urge to kiss Vincent arises, but he pushes it away, knowing he'll likely bang his head if he tries anything like that. Instead, he settles for idly tracing patterns into the other's back with his fingers, listening to him speak, warmth filling him again.

"I like having you this close." Avery murmurs back, chuckling softly, "I'm sorry to have kept you waiting. I wanted to get home to you as soon as I could."

Sharing a hotel room

Lily looked at the other man " hey I just heard that your flight got cancelled too " she said looking to the man who had just been rejected by the hotel " Im travelling alone , if you wanted you could share a room with me ' lily offered and then paused .

"I'm Lily by the way , I got the last room " she explained .

She smiled and nodded " hmmmm so what do you do for a living then ?" She asked him curiously as she grabbed her bag and knelt in the ground to pull out things she would need throughout the night .

"Me? I'm a firefighter nowadays. Used to be in the forces, though." He sits on the edge of the bed, "How about you?"

Avery watches as she moves around, trying to ignore how much his body craved sleep and rest, knowing he should eat something before he eventually did cave in to the urges.

She smiled and looked at the other " hmmm iknee it, I knew you were forces of some kind ' she said softly and looked at the other with a bright smile . .

"me , well , me I'm ex British army , and im currently a surgeon "'she said with a smile

She gave a yawn and hummed " hmmm I'm stuck I need food .. but I need sleep .... I don't know which to do " she said with a questioning look .

"Nice to meet you, Lily. I'm Avery."

She saw the surprised look on his face and nodded " yeah I'm sure , I mean I'd hate to see anyone have to go back out and look for a hotel " she said with a shrug and then smiled at him " and your not intruding , I am travelling alone so it's fine , some company is nice " she pointed out .

" nice to meet you Avery " she said and motioned for him to follow her " now come on let's go to the room "'

"Err, if you're sure, then I'll take you up on that." He rubs the back of his neck, adjusting his grip on his holdall.

Nodding, Avery follows after her unable to believe his luck - never in a million years did he think he'd actually find someone kind enough to let him crash in their hotel room for the night. He thought he'd have had to carry on his search, incredibly glad he doesn't have to.

"So...where were you flying to?" He asks, curious.

Lily smiled and looked at the other " I would not have offered if I did not intend to let you stay " she said as she began walking him toward where her room was supposed to be her bags in hand

"ohhh I was going back home to the UK for a few days holiday , but by the looks of thing that will not be happening ... What about you , where were you flying off to , somewhere warm and sunny ?"

Avery chuckles a little.

"I guess so." He trails after her, listening as she speaks.

"You're going to the UK? That's cool! I lived there a few years." He says, unsure as to why he's telling her this (in theory hes not even sure it counts - the military bases weren't exactly well-populated with civilians), "Surely there'll be another flight tomorrow? I wish I could say I'm going somewhere warm, but I'm going home to Austria again. Gonna...See some family."

She smiled and looked at the other with a small smile . " Hmmm yeah home , I have lived there since I was born , Scotland to be precise " she said with a shrug. Not minding shareong information with him .

"hmmm I'm hopeing there will be if not I'll change my plans and go on what ever flight flies , it's my holidays " she admitted .

" hmmm I've been to Austria too , good skiing over ther " she admitted.

"I used to know a couple of Scottish guys," Avery laughs softly to himself- both of the men he'd known had been good friends to him, but they'd joined the RAF as he became a marine, "I've never been, though. What's it like?"

He nods, listening to her plans, seeing the logic in them.

"Fair enough." The firefighter adjusts his grip on his bag, "Yeah, I used to live in an old skiing village. It was great fun in the winter...there weren't many tourists at that time."

She nodded and hummed " well it's pretty , you can have all four seasons in one day at times , beautiful rolling mountains , long golden sandy beaches , honestly it's a beautiful country "

She smiled ' hmmm yeah I preferred the non touristy area it was cheeper and , you could just relax " she admitted " I have not been skiing in years , might have to try it again "

"Huh. Sounds nice, I'll have to visit some day." Avery muses, glancing briefly at the nondescript artwork on the walls of the corridor, finding the drab paintings dull and soulless.

"I always used to live skiing, though I've not been in years." He comments, "Man, I really wish the interior designers of these places would pick some nicer art."

She smiled " well yeah you should , it's a beautiful place ' she admitted and at his comment at the walls she had to agree " yeah I know , but they are the same no matter where you are chain companies like this just have no imaginations , though I work in hospitals and we'll they are even draber than this " she admitted. .

" so what's your reason for not going skiing ?" She asked as she saw the number " ahhh ha here we are our room " she said admittedly

"Yeah, it's like no one values any creativity anymore." He agrees, turning away from the art on the walls, "Most of the hospitals I've been to have been whitewashed, so definitely more drab than this."

Avery chuckles, thinking back to the fire station - nobody had bothered to decorate that, either, except with the occasional grease stain.

"Hm? Oh, work got in the way. I never had time to go home." He admits, stopping with her in front of the room, "Do you want a hand with the bags whilst you unlock the door?"

Lily smiled and nodded " unless your in the children's ward , the. That place is scary with some if the art that's been done to comfort children " she said with a shrug

" ohhh yeah that would be great here " she said and handed him her bags which were a good bit heavier than she made them seem . She got the key card and opened the door " ok here we are home sweet home for the night "she said as she walked in and held the door open for him .

Avery can't help but laugh at her comment, "Yeah, the children's wards often have...questionable decor."

He takes her bags off of her, flexing his arm under the weight, falling into the habits he's built from years in the fire department to manage the overall weight. He evens his stance and smiles as he walks into the room, quickly scanning the basic interior.

"Thanks." He says as he passes her.

It's an exclusive mix of terrifying a d somebody acid high or on magic mushrooms " she commented and smiled seeing him take the weight of her bags " hmmm Impressive " she commented as she led him in and helped him lay down the bags .

"sorry they were quite heavy , I normally carry light , but winter clothing and a bunch of bits and bobs really add up "

"You're right there." He laughs, blushing at her compliment, "Thanks."

He moves to shrug his own bag from his shoulder, laying it a small distance from her's, rolling his shoulders to stretch out the slight tension forming there.

"Oh, don't worry about it, I'm used to heavy lifting. It's part of my job description." Avery grins, stretching his arms from his body.
