While watching the Odyssey, I couldn’t stop thinking about the fact it’s canon to the Riordanverse that the only people to have ever survived the call of the siren’s song are Odysseus, king of Ithaca, surviving commander of the Trojan War, and Annabeth Chase at just 13 years old. I think we really downplay how absolutely insane of an accomplishment that truly is. She's the pride of Athena for a reason.

i can understand changing elements of a story for an adaption (and im a big advocate for this! no adaptation can or should ever strive to be completely faithful to its source material) however. cutting the nobody part from the odyssey is a huge indicator that you have fundamentally misunderstood odysseus as a character i fear

Thinking about how Odysseus carved the wedding bed out of an olive tree, which means the bed is rooted in the ground.

Thinking about the line “You don’t think I know my own palace? I built it!”.

Thinking about the fact that Odysseus built his entire palace around that olive tree, his and Penelope’s wedding bed, a symbol of their love.

Odysseus’ world is literally built around his love for Penelope.

so I just watched the odyssey movie....

and I made this within 5 minutes of returning. so I think that sums up my thoughts on it. (though im willing to rant more if ppl want it. cause I have COMPLAINTS)

I believe it was a great movie. But it fails to be a good adaptation of the odyssey. I genuinely feel the movie fundamentally fails to understand who odysseus is as a character. His cleverness, deception and lies - what I believe are they key traits of Odysseus fail to come across on the screen.

I also feel Odysseus’s yearning to get back home did not across as much as it should’ve.

What a weird choice to make Clytemnestra Helen’s twin sister. Like I get it, Lupita is gorgeous and you don’t want to hire another actress.

But the fact that Helen is the most beautiful woman in the world is kinda...essential for the plot?

It is the whole reason why Paris chose Aphrodite in the golden apple contest, why he kidnapped her, why the whole trojan war started.

And you're telling me that there is another woman who looks exactly like her?? So Helen is NOT the most beautiful woman in the world ?

It makes no sense, and there was no good reason to not hire another beautiful black actress to play Clytemnestra.

listen it's not that I think epic the musical is a perfect adaption of the odyssey but it was an impressive passion project that knew what it wanted to be and knew what people gravitated to in the original work and it put significant effort into conveying this through its unique medium and tone to the point that hundreds of other people felt compelled to put effort into their own artistic interpretations of that version of the story. and that's really cool! and yes I would be more critical if it was a 100 million dollar project made by a professional because what the fuck do you mean you're a world-famous director and you cut the my name is nobody scene are you goddamn serious

The “nobody” scene in the odyssey is absolutely not just a clever pun—it’s a character defining moment for Odysseus because he refuses to be nobody. He devised an incredible plan that worked and he could have saved his men and returned home much sooner but he just had to yell to the cyclops that he isn’t nobody—he’s Odysseus, king of Ithaca so now Poseidon knows who to curse which severely fucks up the rest of the journey.

The “nobody” scene highlights both Odysseus’s cleverness but also his arrogance and those two traits define Odysseus throughout the entire story. It’s a foundational aspect of Odysseus’s character and cutting the scene displays a shocking level of ignorance and disregard for the themes in the source material.
