Detail of vault with flowers and birds, Archiepiscopal Palace Chapel (interior), mosaic, c. 494-519, Palazzo arcivescovile di Ravenna (Ravenna, Italy) (JSTOR)
Researchers at the University of Waterloo have identified the remains of four more crew members of Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated expedition
HELLO
Round 2!
who would you eat first for survival?
Henry Collins
Cornelius Hickey
we gotta eat collins before the lead levels get too high
what i think is really funny about hickey and crozier is that, really, there is very little tying them together narratively. they aren't parallells or foils or reflections of one another, their arcs are not dependent on each other, there aren't many prominent similarities or oppositions between them. the only reason they have any relevance to each other's stories is because hickey keeps on trying to insert himself as a narrative equal to crozier (which is why he's trying to create a bond between them with the whole 'being irish' thing, turning them into two sides of the same coin or something). he wants to be important in the stories of important people, but its all narrative fabricated by him
but the interesting thing is that if you look at what characters actually reflect hickey, it's not the high ranking officers. it's people like goodsir, who is an obvious foil to hickey in terms of capability of empathy and philosophical outlook on the world. it's people like hartnell, who parallells hickey in how they are both lashed, but then divert and develop from that experience in completely different ways. it's people whom hickey does not view as particularly important, who shouldn't be worthy of comparison to him. and god, he'd fucking hate that, wouldn't he?

Round 1!
who's a worse passenger on a road trip?
Sir John Franklin
George Hodgson
hodgson being mildy annoying Cannot be worse than john ”led all his men into dying in the freezing cold because he refused to reevaluate his planned route” franklin. he will have you drive onto the worst side road imaginable because ’he’s got the map right here, it’s the quickest way’, and will act completely unconcerned when you get stranded in the middle of nowhere because ’surely someone will come along we should just sit tight’
Take this quiz and find out
My sister and I made a personality quiz! (Okay, I made the majority of the quiz and she chose the pictures and suggested two of the questions)
Sorry if your fave isn't one of the results. We only did the characters we could remember off the top of our heads!
Round 3!
who'd be better at adapting to modern times?
Cornelius Hickey
Harry Goodsir
they really should have been the final match-up and i grieve that they meet this early. they are both the characters who are most capable of mentally recalibrating when realizing they’ve got the situation wrong and i also think no one else in this bracket would be as delighted at discovering modern times as these two. everyone else might be able to adapt - goodsir and hickey would Thrive in modern times (though in very different ways)
ultimately i’m gonna have to say goodsir, though. i think they would both be happier people in the modern world, but the modern world would be a better place for having goodsir in it which would not be the case for hickey. i also still kind of feel like hickey feels like he’s ahead of the times nowadays? i still don’t feel like we have the language to properly discuss whatever it is that’s wrong with him - put hickey yet another couple decades into the future and he might win, but i’m going with goodsir for this one. i want to show him wikipedia
Round 1!
who'd be better at adapting to in modern times?
John Bridgens
James Fitzjames
jfj can barely cope already in an enviornment where he knows how to conform to social standards.
if he had been born and raised in the modern era, sure, i think he'd be thriving. but 1840's fitzjames who's suddendly dropped in 2026 and must learn an entire new set of norms? without the rigid crutch of victorian masculinity that man will have an identity crisis and crumble on the spot
Round 2!
who's a better hypothetical dad?
William Strong
Harry Peglar
i want to remind everyone that one of the only things we know about strong is that he’s nice to the ship’s boys. yeah, peglar has the vibe of being a good dad, but in terms of actual evidence i’d argue there’s more for strong
Round 1!
who'd you rather go dress shopping with?
Edward Little
John Morfin
C’mon people, Little doesn’t know. Little doesn’t care. Morfin would have a nice outing and he deserves it.
How do we feel about 2026?
Optimistic!
Neutral
Pessimistic
Gonna save this poll and do the followup at the end of the year
5 days left, PLEASE reblog to reach outside of my reach
