It’s been 1000 days. The dress is here. The man is ready. We have 96 days to go. I’m ready for a nap. Wedding planning is MURDER
7.13
I finally rallied and got my sister and best friend to go bridesmaids dress shopping...and can I just say...SO MUCH LESS STRESSFUL THAN SHOPPING FOR MYSELF. Like seriously, we were in David’s Bridal for 2 hours and came out with the dress, the color, and possible shoe options.
Here’s the story:
All I knew, prior to walking in, is that I wanted to find them something comfortable. My party is a cluster fuck of beautiful body types, and I wanted to be sure that everyone would feel relaxed yet elegant (since that seems to be my overall theme). My sister suggested long dresses because that says elegant, and as far as tops I had a slew of decisions.
I will say that I did my style research before going in. I always do my research before going to any store BECAUSE THAT’S HOW A GOOD PERSON WORKS.
So my 3-month pregnant friend and my sister start looking through dresses, and I sat down with the stylist to discuss my ideas. Tragically, they didn’t have slate blue, which was the color I was going to go with. I didn’t want to go with something I hadn’t seen, so I went off of what they had available.
We started with a few of the styles I had picked out, and let’s just say...no. It was either uncomfortable, or too much boob, or too weird in the body shape, ya know, the usual.
Then we started looking at high neck dresses on a whim, and shocker...they actually looked really good. 20 minutes and 3 styles later, we had found the one...
https://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_crisscross-high-neck-mesh-bridesmaid-dress-f19952_long-bridesmaid-dresses
First of all, the comfort factor: 10/10! Mesh is so forgiving and comfortable, so no one will be dying of heatstroke on the big day.
Next, it’s got great boob coverage, so mine can be the shining stars on the big day. But it’s also got this sexy little thing with the leg slit so everyone can still feel like they look good. They didn’t have one in the size we needed for my sister or friend to try on, so I struggled my way into a size 6 (thank you weight watchers!). Viola! Sexy yet elegant and oh so comfortable!
It was a little tight, the slit isn’t supposed to be bunched like that but you get the picture! That’s one of our official accent colors now! It’s the steel blue option, which, although it’s a Spring wedding, I think will really pop! Our whole venue, as you know, is very light, bright, and airy, so I think a darker shade will stand out more than like..blush. We don’t need the bridesmaids blending in with the scenery!
For shoes, because we were already discussing while standing there, I’m thinking either low light grey (since the boys will be in grey) or nude, because I like the way my sandal looked with it. I’m leaning towards the grey, but we shall see.
This seems like such an anti-climactic ending lol. I showed the dress to all the girls, everyone loves it. I’m planning to do a set of drop earrings as one of their bridal gifts, and we won’t need necklaces so..win for me and my budget.
That’s it, that’s my latest update! I need to get my finances in order because the save the dates need to go out and DJ needs to be booked... let me know what you guys think of the dresses! Our next stop is getting Yonce fitted for and thinking about his suit colors.
Wait, little thing: So we’re getting married in a barn right? What says barn more than suspenders? This whole time I’ve been under the illusion that we were doing those...but after a discussion, last night...not so much. Yonce was like I want them in vests and I’ll be in a full suit! GAG..I literally hate vests. Like...just wear a long sleeve shirt or a tank top. So that was a little argument.
I feel like I ask him for his opinion for wedding stuff ALL THE TIME and he doesn’t have one about like anything. Then I feel bad because the one thing he does have an opinion on, I don’t like. Also, he doesn’t like suspenders, so that’s out the window.
You know what, I’m not even stressed. He hasn’t even asked his party yet, and mine is done and fully dressed. We’ll work it out, there are still some major steps that have to be taken before we can get as far as suspenders vs. vest.
Now I’m just talking to myself :)
What do you guys think? Vests or suspenders? Should I feel bad? I just don’t want them to look tacky!
8.1 (with some July updates)
Good Morning!
I took a little break in July! We had a lot of family things going on: took a beach trip, Dad had a little health thing, birthdays, etc. BUT NOW I’M BACK AND READY TO GOOO.
Here are a few mandatory beach pics, it was our first (my side of the) family vacation in about 10 years! How quickly time goes! My little fart of a niece was adorable and we all had a blast. I took my Dad and Yonce out on a long overdue fishing trip, which was...fun? It was like 105 degrees and I was on fire but they had a blast. Plus I caught a shark!
7.1
Yoncé is working late so I Have time to actually give an update LOL.
On Friday we went and did our wedding registry at bed bath and beyond. The overall experience wasn’t too bad. We went and got our scanner and then made merry with the bed bath and beyond assistant.
Like we’re trying not to put a bunch of stuff on our registry specifically because we want to get money for the honeymoon...but that didn’t stop us from putting a bunch of useless things on there 😊
Caught these besties in bed last night. Can’t believe I lost my fiancé to my child smh
6.27...and then there were 8!
So it all started when I asked one of Kyle’s sister-in-law’s to be in the wedding. Her name is Nicole; she is only five years older than me and we are very close (to the point where I will text her or we will chat about life once a week, like, we would be friends if we met and Kyle wasn’t in the picture). The first time we met she was only engaged to Dan (Kyle’s brother), and we had a lot in common, like a love of drinking and ridiculous drunk stories (reminder I was only 20 going on 21 when we met).
Kyle has a second sister-in-law, her name is Lori. Lori is my sister’s age, meaning she’s 10 years older than me. She and BJ (Kyle’s other brother) were already established adults when I met them. AKA they had a house, a kid with another on the way, etc. We were not as close as Nicole and I, because we didn’t have as much in common. There’s more backstory but I’ll keep it short.
A few months ago when kyle and I were discussing our wedding parties he told me that he had seven people that he wanted in his party, so that I knew I had to have seven. I thought that if I had one of the sister-in-laws in the wedding it wouldn’t be an issue, plus I figured that I didn’t have many close girl cousins and Nicole is probably the closest to me outside of my family and friends. Also I wanted to involve her because she’s fun to be around and she’s cool, duh.

So first of all we are officially a little bit less than 11 months away from the wedding! I can’t believe it! I’m going to be A MRS 😳
Anyway things are going really slow… I found out that one of my bridesmaids is pregnant! I’m super excited! She will have a baby before the wedding so we don’t have to worry about any morning sickness on the day of 😉 Found out that my sister is also planning to try again and if she makes good on her timeline she’ll be seven months pregnant at the wedding… not as excited about that is I could be 🙃 I know I can’t ask her to plan her life around me, but I’m just asking for like..a few months so we can drink together and enjoy ourselves, that’s all!
I guess an update is that we talked to our DJ and we are planning to book him this week. Our venue only gave us two options to use, because the DJ set up is super weird on site. The choice wasn’t too hard, we chose the option that was a hundred dollars less. They both offer the same things, and I trust our venues choices.
We designed our wedding website and by we I mean I 😊 We used Minted because they gave us a free premium URL which is a pain in the ass to get a code for, but we did it! If you need a code let me know! Look..it’s a work in progress but check it out so far!
Rachel & Kyle — Minted
We also got our save the dates which are in photograph below, including Ollie taste testing🐱We’re going to send them out eight months early because apparently 10 months is too far and six months feels too soon for me
I have another thing, but that’ll be in a post of its own 😉. Happy hump day everyone!
We adopted a new baby for Yoncés bday :) our local shelter conveniently had an overflow of kittens 3 days before his birthday so we said what the heck!
meet Oliver 😸 he’s 8 weeks old, 3 lbs, and full of energy! Sal and Mur were hesitant at first but yesterday I caught Mur licking his head so I think we’re past it. Welcome to the club Ollie!

Yesterday we visited…country bride and GENT! I don’t know why we couldn’t say gentlemen but I digress.
My mother joined me for this leg of the bridal search, after the horrible results of the previous visit to a different store. We pulled up to a store that looked like it had not been renovated since 1983, and proceeded in. The selection wasn’t the widest I had ever seen, but there were definitely a few dresses there. We were approached by a woman named Christina, who told us to pick out a few dresses to try on. This was different than the other 3/8 of the stores I had already visited. They all said “tell us what you want and we’ll pull it” instead of letting me make decisions for myself, AND THANK GOD.

So as you all know the dress has been an issue for me. After visiting multiple tailors and custom dress makers, it was looking like there was no way to put boning/an overskirt on the BHLDN dress. Sad.
Thank God for a return policy, amiright?
So, I went back on the hunt for a new dress that covered each and every (unrealistic) base I wanted!

There is so much to cover, so I made 3 posts!!
First thing, our engagement shoot happened! Yes, after buying and returning 6 outfits on amazon, and coordinating with yonce and the photographer, we finally did it!
I didn’t have much by way of expectations. We had met our photographer during our interview process back in November, and she and I had kept in communication during the time between. We did have to reschedule the shoot from 3 weeks ago due to rain, but that wasn’t a big deal. We had a sign made (thank God my friend has a cricut), and baseball shirts that say O’BRIEN 20 on the back, so when we stood side by side it said O’BRIEN 2020 (Like, I know, I’m adorable…sorry).
The day came, I did my make up slightly heavier than normal, threw some pore refiner on Yonce, and we were off to Longs Park in Lancaster PA to get our modeling on!
From what I had read, I expected things to be awkward and uncomfortable…we were in a big, public park with other people around and we would be all up in each other’s breathing room, frozen while she was taking the shots. Surprise! Not the case!
We pulled up and Juliana was so sweet and excited and wanted to see all of our props and catch up for a little while before we got to the actual photos, which I really appreciated. It was going to be weird enough checking out Kyles boogers for the next few hours.
After we caught up, she ran us through her process and taught us our poses that we would be using for the day and at our wedding (the nuzzle, prom, etc). Once those were down, we got started!
I was hesitant that with all the posing, the photos wouldn’t look natural, but they came out BEAUTIFULLY!! She would ask me to twirl my hair or stare in a different direction and the little things made all the difference! Things weren’t even awkward, and when they were, we would laugh and the photos looked even better! I literally couldn’t be happier (and this is coming from someone who hates any photo of herself from the waist down)!
I wanted to keep this short and sweet so the images could speak for themselves. We literally couldn’t have made a better photographer choice! Love you Juliana!

So here we go… The second dress is no longer an option because it’s going to cost $975. The secondhand dress already sold…womp.
So here’s the issue now, I really want to put boning in the dress, in the bodice portion, because there isn’t much to it. I need some structure in my life. I’m not exactly small breasted… and I feel like some support would be helpful. Additionally, I want to feel like on my wedding day I’m wearing a gorgeous dress and I’m all tucked in and ready to go and right now the dress just kind of makes me feel like I’m in a maxi dress with some extra fabric.
When I first tried the dress on and decided I liked it I had emailed the seamstress that BHLDN had recommended and he said it’s possible to put boning in the dress and that it would cost $1000. Clearly I’m not going with that guy but I’ve been having issues with the tailors I’ve seen since.
This week I made three appointments with three different tailors:
The first one was a hard no. He said first he could only put boning in the seams of the dress and I only have two, one on either side of the bodice. That sort of upset me because how the heck am I supposed to keep the girls in tact? He also wouldn’t give me a price on the other alterations a.k.a. taking the dress in, putting in new cups, putting in a bustle, hemming it, etc. He told me I would have to get a corset and wear it underneath… but it’s an illusion top so I’m not too keen on the idea of wearing a corset. I walked out of that shop feeling discouraged.
Same-day new tailor. I walk into this woman’s shop and she was a super little Russian lady. During prom when I was in high school and any other dress I needed altered I would take it to this little foreign woman around the corner from my house and she was the best, but she died, and this woman had me feeling right at home. I felt really confident and was super excited about her. I put the dress on and she immediately realize it needed bigger cups, needed to have it bustled, she knew what I needed before I spoke.
We got to the end of the appointment and I said could you put boning in and she said “oh you’re not interested in corset?” And I said “no I would like the illusion top” and she said “OK no problem we put in boning” I was like what??? That was so easy. I asked her about pricing and she goes in the back and then comes back out and says $325 and my jaw fell off again. I was like “oh that’s all?” and she said “you wanted to cost more?” And I said “oh no thats just a lot less then all the other people that spoken to” and she said “when you don’t have many workers you make things good for customer.” So I walked out of there feeling super awesome super excited loveing my life.
Then I go home and realized she never really explained what kind of boning. Like did she mean she could put it in the side seams like the other guy?? Now I’m agonizing and I call the $1000 place again to ask what kind of boning they would be able to do.
Fast forward to yesterday and they call back. The girls like “hey we got your voicemail, and yes we can do the alterations” I’m like yeah I know that but on the phone I was like “oh that’s great! I was wondering if you could explain how you’d install the boning in the dress” because I figure if they can explain it the way I want it, I know it’s possible, I can go to Russian lady. I think the chick saw right through me and was like mmmm no sweaty :) she was like “you’d have to come in for the initial consultation so we could show you”. Oh word. I’m like “oh okay! Is there a fee associated with that?” I swear to god I snorted when she said “yes the initial consult is $250.” And I said “oh huh okay” and she’s like “we usually do 4 visits after the initial consult, at $50 a visit, plus the cost of alterations” so now, in my head, we’re at $1500. I said “oh that’s reasonable! Anything else?” And she’s like “well we could schedule you for a consult now!” And I said “Lemme consult my assistant and I’ll have her get back to you” and she said “no need! There’s an online portal! Will you be bringing your assistant?” And I said “oh yes! In fact she here now, I’ll talk to you later!” And then pretended to talk to someone else and hung up. Whack.
So this brings us to today, the most eventful(not) of the consults! I found a little mom and pop shop in town. Walk in, they’re watching the news in the store so business must be BOOMING. I said hi! He said let’s see, I pull out the dress, he said um no we are not a factory..to which I was like..what? Short answer was no and I walked out.
I’m getting kinda stressed. What if my boobs fall out at my wedding 🙃
Kyle wouldn’t care, my mom might though.
I have an appt with a custom dress maker on Monday so we shall see how it goes!
This damn dress
My dress came in!!! I’M FREAKING OUT!! The salesperson at BHLDN told me to order a size 18..so I did, and when I took it out of the box to try on, it essentially fell off.
Now I’m having second thoughts because I don’t like the way it looks. No matter how many times I tell myself it still needs to get altered, I can’t snap my head out of it.
SO now I went back on the website and found the other dress I like..and I’m considering ordering a second dress (the more formal for the ceremony and the second for the reception) am I out of control?
I found the second one second hand, unaltered, unworn for $600, and offered $450 or $500. If I have them both I’m still paying less than $1000, not including alterations.
Part of the reason I want the second dress is because the alterations on the first one are going to cost me some $$ (which comes out of my pocket, my parents are paying for my dress, I’m very lucky they offered). I want to get boning so it has more structure, as well as take the hem up and larger cups. If I get the first dress for the ceremony I can nix the boning and just enjoy the dress as the comfy reception dress, ya know? The new dress is a little heavy for dancing, but perfect for the ceremony, pic below.
Am I being crazy? Should I just get a different dress?? Help! I thought I knew but now I’m not sure! My mom thinks the second dress is the wildest idea ever..but my sister thinks it’s smart. When I started looking at dresses after we got engaged I wanted a removable skirt so I could have a ballgown and a casual dress, and this would also give me both options. UGH! IM CONFUSED! Any thoughts or opinions. The first dress is the one I bought, second dress is the one I am considering additionally purchasing for the ceremony.
Also
I gotta tell y’all about our fight but I’ll save it for tomorrow.

She got her dress y’all!!
So I went back in February to Bhldn (which is Anthropology->Urban Outiftters wedding company) and tried in some beautiful dresses. The quality wasn’t like...AWESOME...they were all kinda thin which I didn’t love, but I fell in love with this one dress. I decided if I got it I would put boning in it and give it a little more structure, everything else was perfect.
I was hesitant to buy because the dress was $1100 and then the alterations (which I stupidly asked their “recommended seamstress” who sees people coming from the main line willing to pay boucoup bucks because they can, and that ain’t me) would have cost me $1000. Not loving that, I’m sure I could get a better price elsewhere.
So 3 months later I’m still dress less, I figure what’s the rush. Then on Saturday I’m watching say yes to the dress with my friend/bridesmaid. She asked if I would pull up the dress that I like so I did. As soon as I open the website I put the name in the search bar, and the dress doesn’t come up.
Now I start to freak out a little like “is the dress gone?” Wtf. So I go to the clearance section just to see if it’s there and lo and behold she comes up. In all her radiant beauty, she is THERE. The more beautiful thing is that the fucking $1100 under her has a big ol line through it and next to it says $360.
When I say my jaw dropped I am understating the fact that my jaw physically detached from my face and her dog is still playing with it.
I was like holy shit I gotta buy this now!! So I go look at the sizes they have left and it looks like they have every one...but mine!! I figure I can buy the dress and have them take it out a little. Like for $360 I’ll cut my losses if it doesn’t work out. I call my mom and let her know and she’s so excited and reminds me to ask if the dress still has a 30 day return policy. So I call and ask and it does.
Now I’m lined up, credit card in hand, ready to buy this bitch. I go to put it in the cart and it turns on the only size available IS MY SIZE, not the other way around!! I was like #blessed.
Popped that shit in the cart and I was off to the races. I got my confirmation email, then went back on the site to see the dress again and it’s no longer on the site, sold out, pretty sure I got the last one
So it’s back ordered until the 19th, but should be here before the end of the month 🤗
I’m freaking out!!! Like it’s real!!! I unconventionally bought my dress!!! God literally smacked me in the face and said buy it bitch!!! Life is good 🥳
