hey everypony !! since i’m supporting the DCblackout boycott, i figured i’d make a small info post with links and summaries !!
DCblackout:
DCblackout is the second stage of the DCsowhite discussion that took place earlier this year, which pointed out that DC hasn’t publtished a solo, on-going black title in over 1200 days
DCblackout has 3 main goals: 1. establish and announce 1-3 black on-going titles (with black creative teams) that have cancellation immunity for a minimum of 2 years, 2. educate fans on how sales work so they can accurately support the titles they love, & 3. greenlight a power company book if the titles do well (which would help a fanbase grow)
the goal of DCblackout is to raise awareness of the lack of black DC stories and give fans heroes they can relate to and see themselves in.
blackgirlnerds.com
their official public statement is as follows:
bleedingcool.com
DCsowhite and why now:
DCsowhite brought attention to the fact that there has been no black on-going title in over 1200 days. the last title was ‘I Am Batman’, which ran from 2021-2023 and ended on its #18 issue.
dc heavily relies on mini-runs or one shots for black characters, and black female characters receive even less.
james portis III (aka JPenumbra) posted a piece to comicsbeat.com focusing on the issue.
comicbeats.com
this has been an issue for a long time, but it doesn’t have to continue this way !! below is a link to the DCblackout petition, and blow that are links to JPenumbra’s original piece, the DCblackout website, and blackgirlnerds.com and bleedingcool.com’s pieces (in that order).
#DCSoWhite: End the Black Superhero Drought
It has now been 1171 days since the last time DC published an ongoing series for a Black character in their mainline continuity
DCBlackout - a DC Comics boyocott.
Following the viral #DCSoWhite conversation, creators demand sustained investment, visibility, and accountability for Black representation
DC Blackout: a DC Comics fan boycott launches after 1200 days without an ongoing DC Universe comic book series with a black lead character
the need to talk about the characters vs the fear that all of my analysis is just empty prose and surface level understanding
Me 20 seconds after saying anything about my favorite characters:
princess koriand'r of tamaran really one of the characters of all time. reinvented cognitive behavioral therapy from first principles simply through the act of being one of the only emotionally regulated characters in dc comics. like she's been sold as a political prisoner twice. married for political reasons twice, both which ended in tragedy. komand'r. her parents are dead. the population of her planet is always in fucking peril. she is absolutely motivated by what's happened to her, but she is also very much like, the things that happened to me cannot be changed, and dwelling on them for the sake of it is an act of futility and does me no good in the long run. every day is a chance for me to do good, and that means that tomorrow i can do good, too :)
and everyone around her is like kory you are out of your fucking mind. that's not how we DO things on EARTH. on EARTH, we are ALWAYS traumatized and we NEVER heal. and she's like hey, have you considered that's not a good thing? and nobody ever listens. she's literally keeping the prince of dwelling on it in her purse because she is so fucking kind

can y'all tell me the drama going on with your dick grayson miis in tomodachi life. is he fighting someone. does he have a crush on somebody. does he have the hiccups.
I write these words to you with a heart filled with pain and loss.
Here in the heart of the Gaza Strip, from the heart of suffering, pain, hunger, and a severe siege.
I lost my mother, who meant life and hope to me.
I lost the eldest who was my support in this life.
Now I am alone in this life. My family is suffering and going through very difficult circumstances. I have a young child and a wife who is three months pregnant. We are exhausted from hunger due to the lack of food and medicine.
My baby won't stop crying because he's hungry and wants baby milk. My wife needs healthy food, vitamins, and protein for her unborn child's health.
Because of the war, I lost my job and everything I owned, and I can't provide them with even the most basic necessities.
I ask for your help with a broken heart, a heart wracked with pain and loss.
We urgently need 500 euros to save my family from hunger and the dire need for medicine. We ask nothing of you but your help to save us and keep us alive.
Please Save My Family

He’s a good person. You know that’s true. He saved you. He gave you everything. He could toss you aside at any moment. He’s a good person. Sometimes it’s confusing, being alone with him. He says you’re better than your friends and they’ll get you hurt. He keeps you on a tight leash. If you were under more pressure, you’d be a diamond. He’s a good person. You tell them that. Your friends snicker among themselves when you say it but you won’t stop. You know what he is. Sometimes you say something about what he does and they look at you blankly, like you’re an alien. You’re not sure how much they hate Batman and how much they hate you for loving him. He’s a good person. He tells you you shouldn’t let your emotions get in the way of your brain after screaming at you. You started the fight, you think. Everyone says you’re going to grow up to be him. You know he’s a good person, you admire him. He gave you everything. You’ve never felt more loved than the day he let you climb in his bed and. You look at your girlfriend and you see everything he isn’t. You’re madly in love with her. You know Bruce is a good person. He leaves the cowl sitting out sometimes and when you look into the sockets it looks like a coffin. You can’t do this forever. The thought of leaving him in there makes you sick. You can’t save him. When you were eight and he wrapped you in his jacket it felt like the world narrowed down to you and him. It’s never stopped feeling like that. You need to leave.
it’s a common complaint in comic spaces that many fans either don’t read comics or they incorporate the material they HAVE read into the common fandom perception to the point a character gets completely bastardized in the process but i think the sister phenomenon of people being unable to synthesize and contrast comic narratives and storylines from the Actual Real World should be emphasized in fandom discussion too. because no actually there’s not a single universe where the white man billionaire would ever ethically support the poor or meaningfully partake in leftist activism and no you can’t ‘solve’ american imperialism by wearing a cape and being nice to the oppressors and also misogyny is more than a few bad apples going “girls can’t be superheroes.” like most of the time people do actually READ the stuff but they just don’t consider how implicit societal frameworks like racism + misogyny actively affect how a marginalized character is meta-textually perceived and treated so ultimately that causes that one dc meta post with 100 unrelated tagged characters to fall flat not because it’s entirely “fanon slop” but more so because of the principle of using Comic Written by Men who Publicly Support Registered Sex Offenders #29473929 to base your entire perception of reality and understanding of intersectionality on makes u sound completely delusional like there’s no other way to describe it
Nightwing is about to burst
What have you done, Jason?
I am NOT buying Tomodachi Life just so I can make the Titans and watch them find fun new ways to be overly incestuous and dramatic.
Guess who now has Tomodachi Life and too much free time
Update: my mii just fell in love with roy I can never play again

* oops accidentally posted before finished before- now it’s finished
One point of discourse that pisses me off is the whole- oh look the Fire Nation has women warriors while the Water Tribes are barbaric and sexist. It’s like - look at real life and history. There are so many countries and peoples that had roles for women and other genders outside the norm that would be seen as progressive. Many of these countries and cultures are now considered less progressive than “Western countries” because poverty due to war and colonialism (partially) eroded some of these values and traditions along with the imposition of old-fashioned Western values. Like c’mon, if you don’t have this basic idea in place, you just have a more liberal racism where you still speak down to all non-Western cultures and people. It especially pisses me off with the Southern Water Tribe because you can see so clearly how they were decimated and submitted to a genocide- you can’t scold them and hail how cool the Fire Nation was for having girls commit war crimes (yes- including Azula. She’s an interesting character but I think we give her too much compassion sometimes and forget that she very much did car crimes). It’s the same bullshit you see in current day society to justify horrific acts of war and genocide (Iran, Palestine) and you’ve gotta break out of this stupid thought process.
I know it had its many problems (many!!!) but I keep thinking of this panel from Nightwing: Year One
like… FUCK
For context, Dick gets fired by Bruce and talks to Clark about it. Clark mentions Nightwing- a Kryptonian legend- to Dick.
And IMMEDIATELY after this is that panel. It’s his first question- “And did his family ever realize their mistake?”
Like- fuck- in this moment where Dick is the most resentful of Bruce (rightfully so) and upset and frustrated, he still asks about whether Bruce will take him back eventually. And Dick agrees that it doesn’t matter, but of course it matters to him.
There’s probably more analysis to be done to this but it just hits me in the guts whenever I see this panel or remember it. Taking your first steps out from your family officially after being forcefully booted out and just wishing desperately to be taken in again. It’s different than other times where you might just want to rewind to the past, you want them to see you as you are now and accept you and love you. And I don’t know if Dick ever feels like he gets that. I think this is the beginning of him making peace with that. There’s lots of comic panels that you could pull up that would make it seem like this comes to a resolution like the official adoption of Dick but I think here is where Dick mourns the last time he felt mostly stable in that house and feels it’s his home. And Jason’s death and the fallout from that feels like the nail in the coffin. Bruce and the mansion and Alfred by consequence will never be safe again because this established the precedent: Dick can always be kicked out again.
Dick wishes he could fly unfettered anyways but he can’t. Bruce remains a stone around his neck.
ugh god remember when there was walking on eggshells tension.
tim being all: uhm bruce was gonna adopt me but uhm now he's not and i don't want to step on your toes emotionally or whatever bc it wasn't all that long ago that bruce adopted you. and dick was all: i'm not even part of this whole operation anymore, but you should take bruce's help, and while you're at it, you should just forget you ever knew me. bruce doesn't need me at the end of the day. and anyway. see ya but actually not really.
i miss her...
roy "i don't think i know how not to forgive you" harper versus dick "i don't know how to let you forgive me" grayson
