i don't like how this website tries to equate 'shelteredness' with physical isolation and asociality rather than an obliviousness to one's place in society that is afforded through material privilege. someone can have a job and a thriving social life and regularly go out with their friends or whatever and still be 'sheltered' about certain forms of oppression in that regard. i promise you your rhetorical "shut in" who has been cut off from the outside world (through self-imposed means or otherwise) is probably the least likely person to be blissfully unaware of life's hardships if you were to actually think about why it is they might be in that position in the first place

the conversation I'd like to have on immigration is on the lines of "why is the world so fucked that taking massive risks to come over to the global north in order to work as a cleaner or tesco security guard such an appealing prospect, and how can we change this? There's no law of physics that says, say, the ivory coast should be poorer than britain; how do we work together to make these people as wealthy as we are? What kind of international collaboration is possible?" but well the politics of my country is such that i actually have to focus on points like "immigrants are people who just want to get on with their lives", "no you piece of shit we can't shoot the small boats", "the NHS, agriculture, hospitality, and so on, would absolutely collapse within a week if you carried out mass deportations", "this is all a rather blatant moral manic whipped up by the same people who have been slicing up our state capacity for decades in order to feed it to their mates", etc

Something I think about a lot is when dj khaled spent a day lost at sea on a jet ski literally just because he drove away and got lost and started live posting about it and as he got increasingly panicked he started making like inspirational insta stories about his opps wanting him to fail even though he was entirely responsible for the situation and just started saying shit like “they don’t want you to WIN. they don’t want you to get found when you’re lost at sea in the dark”
