In defense of the King James Version

So the King James Version is a bad translation. It is, everyone knows it. It’s not the translators’ fault, they worked with the texts that were available at that time and made assumptions about the nature of the text that everyone else made too. But still, it’s a bad translation. We have better texts now, better philology, a better understanding of Ancient Near Eastern and Greek/Roman history, and the best translations are deliberately done with an eye towards the idea that the Old Testament is not just a prequel to the New.

I think it’s okay to read the King James Version. You definitely shouldn’t use it as your only translation, but if you’re an English speaker, a historian, an English literature fan, or interested in early American theology, the King James Version is indispensable. It’s not only the source text for theology, it’s a source text for literature, it was the text used to teach children to read and write, it was the text that defined Puritanism and anglophone Calvinism. It’s also a beautiful translation in a way that most of its successors aren’t.

The King James Version is a bad translation. Read it.
