I know I'm already horribly behind on @arkhangelssky's OCtober, but I'm determined to catch back up to some degree today!!! Gonna start with a bit of character study into Moloch's childhood, especially since I don't plan on it coming up much if at all during The Flock. Enjoy!
"Moloch, if you ask when we can go back out again this week, I'll make you stay here with Grandpa."
The boy sighed heavily, back pressed against the front of his father's desk. The study was big and lavishly decorated, and while there were plenty of reasonable seating options, Moloch found his favorite place in the room was seated on the scratchy grey and black rug in the center of it. It also gained extra points for being somewhere that he shouldn't sit, that infuriated his aunts whenever they had company come from outside the commune.
"I don't get it. Why don't we just live out there with normal people? Everyone here is so dumb." he huffed, not bothering to hide his annoyance at the situation as he began picking at the carpet tufts. The sound of his father shifting in his chair had him stop, Moloch instead quickly smoothing over the place that he had begun to fray. The last time he had been caught doing it, one of his aunts had punished him with the switch across his hands, leaving welts on the skin that still hadn't healed fully.
"The Flock has been in the family for multiple generations. In order to profit from it, we need to remain as figureheads. I was like you once too, Moloch. You'll understand once you get older."
There it was, his least favorite phrase: You'll understand when you get older. It mocked him, the implication that he was too young and stupid to understand simple concepts. Frankly, Moloch was sure that in terms of ten-year-olds, he was in the top percentile in intelligence. At least high enough that his family could stop treating him like a baby, or worse, like one of the members of the cult they ran.
"I think I'm old enough." he muttered, to which his father only chuckled softly in reply.
"So did I when I was your age. My father, your grandfather, proved me otherwise by putting me in charge of things for a week. By the third day, I finally gave up and he beat me for failing. I realized that the beating was far less of a punishment than what would have happened had I continued trying to prove him wrong. I wasn't ready, and neither are you."
Moloch stood up, turning to face his father, hands pressed against the surface of the desk. "Let me be in charge for a week. I can do better than you did. I know I can, and then you can stop acting like I'm a kid!"
The man grinned at his son, amusement written on his face but something cold in his eyes. It was something Moloch admired about his father, the way he was capable of looking so friendly until you met his eyes. Moloch had tried to practice it a few times in the bathroom mirror, but he simply couldn't figure out how to look as if he cared.
"Moloch, I know you're capable. Can we settle this by agreeing to have you supervise the next ritual?"
That piqued his interest. "Can I even stay for the end of it?" The few times he had tried to sneak in and observe the sacrifice, one of his obnoxious aunts had managed to spot him and pull him away before the knife had met skin.
"If you promise not to be sick, then yes, you can watch the whole thing." His father bookmarked and closed the book he had been writing in, a worn, leather-bound copy of the Flock's scripture that the man made notes in for sermons. "There's one scheduled for next week. If you really sit down and focus with your tutoring from your grandfather, then I might even let you lead the chant."
While the chanting aspect was far less appealing, Moloch nodded in agreement, not wanting to lose out on the viewing as a whole. "I can try, I guess."
"Good. Go find your grandfather then, Moloch. I have a meeting in a bit, so I need to prepare." His father stood, making a shooing motion out of the room.
The annoyance bubbled back up, but Moloch bit it back and chose to leave obediently, but not in the direction of the living room where his grandfather was probably reading, but instead his bedroom. He had his own research to do if he was going to be prepared for the ritual, and this would be way more interesting than anything else the Flock had to offer in the next week.
I haven't really gotten to write much for Intin yet, so here is a little character study thing! Please enjoy day 5!
Bright blue skies, kids playing, people sunbathing, the ocean lapping against the warm sand...it was a perfect day and so very, very out of Intin's element.
It was Lenore who had talked them into it, who had convinced them that experiencing the world would be good, and that a little beach day could be therapeutic. It had seemed so silly, but the second Lenore had looked at them with that hopeful expression, they had no choice but to agree.
So now the two of them sat on a makeshift blanket comprised of three towels that were being held down by sandals, Lenore's bag, and a bag of snacks that had been picked up on the way. Lenore put together two beach-appropriate outfits and covered them in some sort of salve; sunscreen, as she had explained. Despite how silly it had made Intin feel while getting ready, they had to admit that they easily fit in with the humans that surrounded them.
"I know that water probably isn't a good idea..." Lenore mused as Intin looked out at the water. As pretty as it looked, the second that they would touch the ocean would be an environmental disaster, and it probably would be best not to make that big of an impact with Intin's following still being as small as it was.
"How about suncastles?"
"...what?"
"Yeah! You can't rot sand, so as long as I go ahead and get the water for you, I bet we can make something really, really cool." Lenore seemed absolutely proud of herself as she spoke, and Intin couldn't help but feel their stomach flutter at the thoughtfulness of her actions. She was definitely the correct choice of being their high priestess.
"I am not accustomed to building things...but I am intrigued. I would be willing to assist in the creation of sand castles." They barely got to finish speaking before the goth girl hurriedly scrambled up and grabbed the can she had been drinking from, some canned coffee from a local business, and raised it to her lips. Intin watched, mildly impressed, as she slammed the rest of the drink and hurried off to the water to fill it back up.
Intin took a minute to look around the beach again, at the happy people enjoying a peaceful day of sun and fun. They never really got to see this side of humanity during the height of their existence, only fear and pain and worship. The modern world definitely had lost the flair of the world they once knew...but perhaps this new wave of humanity wasn't so bad after all. Maybe in this new world, a god of death and decay could make a silly little sandcastle with their goth girl priestess and everything could be okay.
Day 3 and still (kinda) going strong! For meme I decided to put together out of context spoiler packs for a handful of universes for the public to be very, very baffled about. Enjoy!
While thinking of who to use for this, I made the realization that probably the FUNNIEST choice would be Mr. defense attorney himself, Darsel. So enjoy!
All adventurers know that there is a very fine line between good and evil in the world. There is an energy, a power that comes from each, one that can either fill your body with power and invigorate you, or one that overwhelms and makes you struggle for breath. However, somewhere between the two lies a place that is so detached from the rest of society that the name of the kingdom has been forgotten a long, long time ago. Travelers now just simply call it the Crossroads, and warn others to not venture within, to not witness the cruelty that lays there.
The Crossroads was probably a beautiful, flourishing kingdom at one point, but if you stumble across it now, it feels lifeless and dead. The people of the kingdom seem normal from afar, but there is never any emotion behind their words. You will find no kindness nor discrimination in the Crossroads, just a complacency that comes off as inhuman.
Once you meet the monarchy of the Crossroads, you'll wonder if perhaps you misjudged the citizens, if perhaps their strange lack of emotion is far more human than the charismatic man that suits at the head. Do not trust his smile and do not entrust your safety to him. Do not let him woo you as he has to so many other travelers. There is a reason that not many people who enter the Crossroads leave, and it is because of the wicked King Darsel.
And definitely be wary of the princess Sierra. Her word is as good as any god's, and Darsel will permit her to do as she pleases. The king may be cruel and wicked, but the princess is spoiled and uses that to her benefit. The pair of them explain why the people of the kingdom simply choose to not feel, why they act in blank obedience. It is simpler to mindlessly obey rather than try to fight an impossibly superior opponent.
If you decide to not heed my words, then I hope that you will at least remember my warnings. Just remember that if you ever find yourself at the Crossroads, you have fallen somewhere that you may never be able to leave.
