Them: *says something that I can’t hear* Me: sorry, I’m partially deaf, can you repeat that? Them: Never mind, it didn’t matter. Me: {image of a sad dog with one side of its face pressed against the inside of a rain-soaked car window}

One of the most heart dropping feelings to a deaf/hoh person is being told “never mind” or “it wasn’t important” when you ask someone to repeat themselves.

No matter what it was, you get left out. You are the only one in the room who doesn’t understand. Being deaf/hoh can be really isolating, especially if you are the only deaf/hoh person you know outside of the internet

Although no one intends it this way, when they say “never mind” it feels like they are saying you dont deserve to be in the conversation. When they say “it doesn’t matter” it feels like they’re saying that you don’t matter.

Dear hearing people, please be patient with us. I know it’s frustrating having to repeat what you said but imagine how much more frustrating it is for that deaf/hoh person working 2x as hard and straining their ears for something you can do with ease.
