Listen I'm a little drunk but... yarn crafts are so important. Textile arts are the backbone of society. All of us take our clothing and accessories and upholstery for granted and it's honestly shocking

I used to buy affordable t-shirts and they were comfy and nice, now I buy them in the same price range and they're sandpaper. They don't wick away moisture and the print comes undone after two washes. I buy denim and the crotch falls apart in months. I read about how modern Singer sewing machines are disappointing and then look at the delicate machining and the beautiful finishes on my 1857 machine and wonder if this is progress?!

Hot take but amatonormativity should be considered a feminist issue and was in fact eluded to in a lot of early feminist writing, and the fact that we don’t widely regard it as a feminist issue today indicates either a loss of knowledge or an acceptance of harmful social norms on the part of modern feminists

Amatonormativity:

-Teaches young women and girls that you must be in a romantic relationship to be happy, and therefore insinuates that they should prioritize making themselves romanticly available (usually to men) over all other things

- Validates straight men’s feeling of entitlement towards women by equating the right to happiness with a right to women’s bodies and emotional labor

- Helps justify the act of isolating your romantic partner from their friends by promoting the idea that your romantic relationships should be prioritized over all other social relationships, resulting in a climate where it’s easier for domestic abusers to socially isolate their victims

-Promotes negative views of older single women such as “hags”, “spinsters” and “crazy cat ladies”

And all of these things are directly tied to frequently discussed feminist issues, so I really don’t know why no one ever talks about amatonormativity in feminist spaces.  These norms don’t just hurt aros and poly people they hurt everyone, and it would greatly benefit y’all to actually listen to us when we discuss these issues.

So a few people have made this comment, but almost all the rest of them have been terfs, so I’m only gonna be replying to this one.

Amatonormativity does have a lot of overlap with compulsory heterosexuality, and in fact, Elizabeth Brake, the woman who coined the term even talks about that in her explanation of it, but they are not the same thing. 

I’m gonna be honest, most of my posts about amatonormativity never actually get popular outside of the aro and poly communities so I didn’t bother to define terms but this one is popular enough that it’s probably worth doing.

Amatonormativity: The widespread assumption that everyone is better off in an exclusive, romantic, long-term coupled relationship, and that everyone is seeking such a relationship.

Compulsory heterosexuality: The idea that heterosexuality is assumed and enforced by a patriarchal and heteronormative society.

While you can see from the definition where these two ideas intersect (and there has actually been a fair amount of discussion about whether or not one is a subset of the other) they do have some differences. While the examples I was giving were specific to feminism, and as a result, fit into that intersection more than some other examples would, those aren’t the only ways amatonormativity can express itself. It can also look like: 

People saying that open relationships aren’t healthy 

A relative who’s always saying you need to “meet somebody and settle down”

Only being able to legally marry one person 

The assumption that all long term legal partnerships (aka: marriage) are romantic 

A stigma against living with friends or family after a certain age 

etc etc 

None of these things are especially gender-specific, they can be applied to both straight and LGBQAP people, and they don’t necessarily enforce compulsory heterosexuality. Similarly, there are other things that might be considered  compulsory heterosexuality but not amatonormativity.

It’s fair, and maybe even necessary, to view compulsory heterosexuality and amatonormativity as a Venn diagram, and I don’t think it’s inaccurate to say that any of the things in my original bullet list also fall under the concept of  compulsory heterosexuality. That said, my examples falling into the middle of the Venn diagram doesn’t make them any less relevant to a discussion about amatonormativity, and I think examining these issues through the lenses of both  compulsory heterosexuality and amatonormativity is important if you want to fully understand the problem. Only looking at these topics through one lens or the other isn’t going to give you a clear picture.

I keep seeing the Orphic Hymns recommended as part of workings with planets. Is there something special about those prayers, or would any prayer for the planet you're trying to connect to work?

The Orphic hymns are believed to be from the 2nd or 3rd century AD, so the short answer is antiquity.

The longer answer is that, like many of the famous sigils (the Helm of Awe, for example), the Orphic Hymns have been used MANY times. We can assume they work, right? I would call them a shortcut to getting the attention of the planet you are interested in interacting with.

Are they needed? Nope. Can you use any prayer? Absolutely.

I don't agree with the idea that planetary magic is a fixed practice that must be performed in one particular way. You need to find the way that works for you. I think that working with the Orphic Hymns is easier and more effective, but that's just been my experience.

first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.

now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:

in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.

and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.

and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.

it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:

• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.

• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.

• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.

• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.

• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.

• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.

and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.

what i'm asking:

if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.

if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.

india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.

we can still save her. but only loudly.
