so apparently the dsm 6 is being structured around bio-pathologizing mental illness specifically in the direction of biomarkers…if u aren’t concerned about this maybe you should be…
Psychiatry is hard at work crafting the newest edition of its diagnostic bible, DSM-6.
There is a Biomarkers and Biological Factors committee. They are not “reorganizing the whole project”. They are investigating if biomarkers have enough evidence to be included, and proposing a structure to include new research when it comes out.
PsychiatryOnline.org is the platform for all American Psychiatric Association Publishing journals, DSM, and bestselling textbooks, as well a
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has released a series of papers offering a roadmap for the future of the Diagnostic and Statistic
“Well, what if they do include biomarkers! That’s means genetic testing, right?” No.
And even if it does, nobody is suggesting a full diagnosis based solely on genetics.
Is it great that they’re considering wearables, and “artificial intelligence”? Not really. Are things like “brain imaging”, “EEGs”, and “cognitive tasks” possibly great diagnostic tools? Yes. Should they be included? Maybe! Are they going to change it to revolve around biomarkers? NO.
Are there things we should still be concerned about? Absolutely.
But it’s too early to tell what the impact of these inclusions will be, and honestly they might be helpful if done well. Can we please stop fear-mongering. We have enough shit to deal with already.

Psychiatry is hard at work crafting the newest edition of its diagnostic bible, DSM-6.
…so they’re now trying to search for “biomarkers”- which are essentially genes, or circumstances of conception/birth/what have you, that can “increase the risk” of mental illnesses. how is this any different from people wondering if there’s a “gay gene?” or autism speaks trying to find a genetic or reproductive “cure for autism?”
it’s not. this is barely disguised eugenics that they have ACKNOWLEDGED may (will) do more to harm than good for people with abnormal mental states. what else could the end result of finding a “mental illness gene” be than a reason to further marginalize those who are already marginalized, already branded as more likely to be (or even inherently) “mentally ill” and eventually discourage them to reproduce, either by coercion or force?
it’s more obvious than ever now. everyone should be anti psych
Psychiatry as an institution functions to obfuscate the causes of mental and emotional disturbance (economic exploitation, abuse, lack of access to resources, etc) by describing mental illness as an individual pathology that needs to be recognized and treated by science.
Given where these hardships cluster most intensely, it is extremely useful to white supremacy and eugenics to have a "scientific" method of proving that pathology is more common among "degenerate" populations.
The DSM's various incarnations have corresponded to shifts in which part of this process have been considered more or less important to prioritize - the latest restructuring to focus on biomarkers is just a recalibration to better suit the needs of the imperial-capitalist white supremacist project.
ok so i recommend that everybody read the actual article from the comity which can be found here because its important to actually read the source. if you dont want to read it here is a detect quote from the summary end of the article
"this process is envisioned as an evolving framework, allowing for the incorporation of diverse data types—including biological markers (e.g., fluid biomarkers, neuroimaging, functional readouts), behavioral signatures (e.g., digital phenotyping), and clinical symptoms (e.g., social withdrawal or anhedonia)—to contribute to more refined, clinically meaningful, and biologically grounded diagnostic categories."
"This refined diagnostic approach will allow for matching patients with treatments that target the underlying biological mechanisms of their condition, rather than relying solely on symptom clusters. As a result, treatment may become more effective, timely, and patient-specific, reducing trial-and-error prescribing and enhancing overall clinical outcomes."
the biomarkers they are talking about are already used. its brain scans, blood tests, and family history. literally it just them saying that besides just doing synonym based diagnosis they will be looking at how the individuals brains reacts though testing and if the disorder is a genetic one (which a lot are btw) using blood and family history (because a lot of disorders affect your hormones which can show up in blood if you are using the right test)
hell in the first part where they are talking about the biomarkers the article says this
"Biomarkers can be derived using a variety of methodologies, including genetics (9), omics technologies (10), brain imaging (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI], positron emission tomography [PET]) (11), electroencephalogram (EEG) (12), behavioral and cognitive tasks (13, 14), and peripheral blood–based assays (15)."
now, i dont believe this is necessarily a good thing, especially with the climate of today's world. but it is still a good tester because each individuals biology is different and cause cause things to show up in strange ways. I have had direct genetic testing done to do with my psychology to find out what medication works and doesnt work for me, this would fall under the biomarkers testing for my disorders.
the article op links im my opinion does not show what is being talking about in the amarican psychology journal to an accurate degree having read both, it leaves out what the dsm 6 would be looking at adding besides just using the phrase "biomarkers" which i belive was a choose by the author to suture distress in people who havent read the article. in article derectly goes against what Peter says.
tldr: no, the dsm 6 will not be replacing symptom based diagnosing with biomarkers, they are just adding biomarker testing to hopefully reduce the misdiagnosis that just symptoms can cause.
i know its been said b4 but growing up suicidal and then reaching an age you never planned to live to is extremely stressful and terrifying, and we deserve more credit for not killing ourselves and THEN having to make up for the time we spent not caring if we lived or died and not doing work to improve our lives.
i feel behind in life because i spent the last 7 ish years not giving a shit about my future because i assumed id be dead before id have to deal with that, and now i have to start making decisions that many people started considering years ago.
i just feel like. suicidal people dont get credit for firstly, how stressful life is while suicidal, how difficult it is just to do simple tasks, and secondly, how hard it is to recover from years spent not caring once a person is no longer actively suicidal or no longer having suicidal ideations.
As a kid I always thought that if telepaths were real I'd know because of any of them tried to read my mind the firehouse of insane bullshit would make them drop to the ground screaming, if not actually explode.
My adolescent ADHD and Adult autism diagnosis were the opposite of a surprise.
Violent Reminder that this is an autobio comic about me and my personal experiences and nothing else.
...But I am REALLY enjoying all the additions about how other people's brains operate, possible OCs, the related mechanics, and your personal mental pit traps for intruding telepaths so keep those comin!
[Image Description: It's a vertical comic strip of 14 panels arranged one under the other. The style is realistic, done with sketchy lines in a dark burgundy. It is not colored or shaded and there is no background. The comic features the interactions of a couple, Magritte (also called Margie) and Rafael (also called Raf). Magritte is a young woman, she is wearing a baggy armhole tank top with a tight fitting black top underneath, shorts and boots. She has a messy bun and a small messenger bag slung over her left shoulder. Rafael is her partner, wearing baggy pants, sneakers, fingerless gloves, V-neck t-shirt and an open button-up jacket with a hoodie and the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His hair has short side with long top bangs and a short goatee.
(First panel): There's only Magritte visible from the waist up. Off screen, Raf says to someone else: “Magritte has our tickets.” Magritte is excited, looking straight forward. Her left hand in on her bag's strap, her right hand rummaging inside her bag. Magritte says: "Yeah! Even made sure to put them in my wallet so that I wouldn't- uh..."
(Second panel): She is beginning to look concerned, now with her face turned to her back, both left hand holding the lip to open the bag wider and her right hand still rummaging inside. Magritte says: "wouldn't forget.... Hang on, it's not on it's usual pocket. Haha." The last is a nervous laughter.
(Third panel): Magritte is kneeling on the ground. Rafael is standing to the side and behind her, only his feet visible. Magritte looks frantic, searching inside her bag. Her right arm is forearm deep digging in her bag. Magritte says: "It's definitely here-! It's the one thing I never forget 'cus I never take it out of my bag!" Rafael says, firmly: "Margie, when you took it out to put the tickets in, did you put the wallet back in the bag?" The letters are bolded, with the word "back" underlined for emphasis. Magritte says: "Give me some credit, there's no way I'm that stupid." The last three words are underlined for emphasis.
(Fourth panel): The scene has changed and now Magritte and Rafael are in a car. We see them from the passenger's side. Rafael is driving, looking straight ahead at the road. Magritte is hunched forward, hugging herself with the left hand. Her right hand is holding her head. She is looking out the passenger window, avoiding Raf.
(Fifth panel): Rafael turns slightly to look at Magritte.
(Sixth panel): The point of view is now a side profile view from the drivers side. Rafael has his left arm leaning on the open window, his right hand on the wheel. Magritte is hunched over facing the passenger window. Rafael says: "I'm not mad at you, if that's what you're worried about." Magritte says: "I can literally feel your disappointment."
(Seventh panel): Back to the passengers side, Rafael is looking at the road. Magritte is frustrated, no longer leaning her head against her right hand and instead her hand is palm upwards. Rafael says: "Well, yes. It is a disappointing situation, but-" Magritte interrupts: "You'd think I'd be able to do the one thing I was asked to do-! That I'd at least learn from the last billion times I forgot shit. Rafael says, quieter: “that's not where I was going with this...”
(Eighth panel): Magritte has her right hand holding her face with the palm on her cheek, left hand placing the tips of her fingers on her left temple and eye brows. She is frustrated and angry. Magritte says: "It's not like I've got anything more important rattling around in my brain. But, for some reason, if it's not my music, or like.... food or something, then it's just not a priority. I can't make myself care enough to make it a priority!"
(Ninth panel): She now has both hands in front of her, elbows bent, finger extended in a vague hand gesture as if there was something in front of her. Magritte says: "I'm an adult in my 20s and I still manage my responsibilities like a child. I'd be more dependable if I could just stop and think for a second, but I'd probably forget to even breathe if it weren't for the..."
(Tenth panel): Her frustrated expression turned to confusion. Her hands are still in the air in the same position as before. Magritte says:"... why are we parked?" Her noticing this stopped her rant.
(Eleventh panel): Magritte straightens up and faces the window entirely, left hand crossed over her body to lean on the car door. Rafael, off screen: "Margie." Magritte says: "Oh." Magritte's inner thoughts are written around her. "He stopped the car to scold me. No, not ‘scold’. Don't be a child about this. He's disappointed and just needs to make sure you understand so you can do better next ti-"
(Twelfth panel): Magritte is still looking out the window, but now with a shocked expression. Rafael reached with his right hand, and its now resting gently on her upper back. Rafael interrupts her inner monologue with "I need you to stop repeating the shit your parents and teachers and such yelled at you growing up. They were wrong, and nothing you just said makes sense."
(Thirteenth panel): The perspective switches back to the driver's side profile. Rafael says: "A poor memory isn't synonymous with poor priorities. Nor does it speak to a lack of maturity. The priority was there, we just have to build a better habit of checking things before we leave the apartment. Both of us. It's gonna take time. You afford everyone else a ton of patience, all the time. Can you please afford some for yourself? The situation sucks, we were both looking forward to this. But it's not the end of the world. We didn't forget things on purpose. So let's take it easy and try to end the day on a good note. Alright?" Magritte says: "Okay... c-can we um...."
(Fourteenth panel): Magritte has turned to face Rafael and her eyes are filled with tears and they're running down her cheeks. Rafael looks startled, lifting his arm off Magritte's back. Magritte says: "Can we get some ice cream on the way back?" Rafael says: "O-of course!" End of description.]

Important Update: ADHD Coach Tomoyo thankfully approves of this comic.
I had to explain to them who Tomoyo is and the premise of the show they're from, and they loved everything about the character choice, and also that y'all know people like them exist to help you out. They also said they wish they could take every single one of you on as clients... curse the limitations of their flesh and bones.
Being Better: My ADHD comic for @adhd-alien’s Cosmic Takeover event!
Having ADHD has been a really hard experience for me, and it affects me every minute of my life. This is the first time I’ve ever been able to address it publicly, and I’m glad I got to share it in such a special way. If you relate and think you have ADHD, don’t hesitate to contact a medical professional and find out more about getting diagnosed. Thank you for reading! ❤️
You have things you want and need to do. You want to do -something- but you just can't. This is based on my recent struggles with ADHD, executive dysfunction is a bitch.
