I'm a neurotypical actor playing a character with OCD and GAD- any tips for body language, line delivery, etc. so that I communicate this part of the character without being disrespectful?
Thank you for asking! It’s always good to research things that you’re not familiar with!
I’m drawing from my own personal experiences, so if anyone has anything to add I’ll be sure so reblog it!
The first thing I thought of was body language and speaking volume. When my OCD and GAD were at some of it’s worst points, I fidgeted a lot, I acted very closed off and quiet (I once had a teacher describe it as “hiding behind my hair” because I would keep my head down and my hair around my face), and I would speak softly. Depending on if this is up on a stage or not, speaking softly might be a bit hard to pull off though! There were also some times when the anxiety would come out as anger and fighting with my parents, so maybe you can incorporate that some how?
A good thing to remember about OCD as well, it’s not all hand washing and counting things. Some people don’t have those compulsions at all! Some more subtle compulsions that you might be able to use in your roll are tapping things, or taking a step back and then forward again because it “wasn’t right.”
The big thing to remember is that people with OCD and GAD are just like anyone else, we just have this thing with our brain chemistry that makes some things harder for us than people who don’t have that same chemistry! We smile, we laugh, we mess around with our friends, and for a lot of people unless you told someone that you have OCD you probably wouldn’t be able to tell that they did just seeing them walking down the street one day!
Like I said, this is all stuff that I’m getting from my own personal experiences with OCD and GAD (and a little bit of performance experience myself!) , so if anyone has anything to add I’ll gladly reblog it/post the comment that you leave! I really hope I helped a little! Break a leg with your role!
