uurynn:
For a minute, his eyes drifted down again. He seemed lost between reality, losing pieces of himself that he had to pick up just to snap back into his mind. Spacing out, and continuously forgetting what he’d been there for.
At the mention of not being human, Wrynn’s eyes immediately lit up. Jolting forward just a few feet, he seemed to lose his breath. Heaving chest, followed by a spinning head, he caught himself. Barely audible, barely making sense. Barely able to finish sentences, or even words.
“Not.. human.. different.. changed.. help.. sea.. family..” he huffed through his teeth. On his hands and knees, one of his hands reached into the sea-soaked sand. The water rushed back upwards to meet his hand, where his skin began to shine, as if glitter had been poured all over him.
The holographic specks the ocean water had left on Wrynn stayed for a while. He looked back up to her, having finally caught his breath.
“I’m not.. entirely human.”
She jerked back as he jolted forwards unexpectedly, only to drift closer again to hear him. His demeanour had done almost a complete 180, from completely lost to... almost excited.
She frowned as she attempted to piece together the fractured words’ meaning. “So... you’re not actually a human, something changed you, and... help, sea, family,” she muttered, eyes searching the water in front of her as if it could provide answers. Then, in a way, it did - the sea itself seemed to reach for his hand and set it sparkling. “...Huh. Okay.”
Aukai swam forwards, using her arms to pull herself up closer when she reached the sand. Her tail stretched into the water behind her, green scales glittering in the sunlight. She definitely wasn’t allowed to go on shore like this, but she honestly couldn’t care less about the rules.
She grabbed his hand and turned it in hers, staring intently at his glittering skin. Then she realized exactly what she’d just done and dropped it with a squeak and a wide-eyed expression. “Sorry! Sorry. I, uh... sorry.”
She sighed and propped her head up to look at him. “Okay. I think we both have some explaining to do. Do you want to go first, or should I?”

Sitting, staring, and hoping. That’s what Wrynn had been doing near the shore, alone. Drifting between fantasy and reality, asking for some sign. The waters were quite calm, giving him a clearer shot at his practice; but to no avail.
The silence he received in response only made him want to try harder. Interacting with his kind through any signal he could create would be a miracle. He missed them, much more than anyone could fathom.
With a deep breath, his knees curled to his chest. He rested his chin on them, and kept his arms wrapped around them to keep himself in place. Baby blue hues distancing themselves once again, trying to keep in place; trying not to cry. He wouldn’t cry.
Wrynn was startled, seeing something appear from the water. Within a second, his hopes were raised and smashed. he had hoped to see some sort of unicorn, but it was only a mermaid. They weren’t something he hadn’t seen or heard of before. With a heavy sign, his eyes came back to look at her.
“Oh, hi.” His voice was laced with disappointment. He obviously wasn’t in too great of a mood. His eyes seemed to pull back tears. He couldn’t mourn in someone’s presence. It felt impolite.
Of all reactions, obvious disappointment was the one she had least expected to come across. Higher on the list were surprise and curiosity, or even fear or anger. Disappointment, sorrow, and a bland “oh, hi” had been somewhere down by the very bottom, right above them turning out to actually be a dolphin in an excellent disguise, and frankly she didn’t know how to react. She barely even knew why she’d come.
“...Hello. Are...” She hesitated. She’d been going to ask if he was okay, but it didn’t seem like he was. Should she leave? Her runes didn’t want her to. Why had they brought her to him, anyway? Even without the runes telling her, his reaction to her marked him as no normal human.
Regardless... he looked sad. Not the a-thing-I-was-excited-for-got-cancelled kind, or the I-dropped-my-food-before-I-could-eat-it kind, or even the I-lost-something-important kind, though it was similar. This was a deep sorrow, the kind that sank into your bones, that gripped your heart till you could scarcely think about anything else. He was hurting, and she couldn’t stand seeing anyone else in pain.
She tried again. “I’m sorry for intruding, I... needed to come here. To see you, I think.” She sighed. If there was a better way to put this, she didn’t know it. There was a reason she had come, and she needed to find out what it was. “I really don’t mean to be rude, but... you’re not just a normal human, are you?”

The runes weren’t usually specific, but this time they were frustratingly vague. She’d woken up with a strong feeling of needing to be somewhere, and followed it out of the city and towards the mainland.
It wasn’t an exact thing; it wasn’t as if the runes would just say ‘go to this place at this time to do this thing’ - that would be too useful. Most of the time it wasn’t even full sentences; the runes communicated in keywords, with colours for tone and a strong influence on intuition. If you asked her, she couldn’t tell you where she was going - only that she was going in the right direction. At least following them gave her an excuse to go out and explore - one of the only perks, in her opinion.
Aukai came to a stop in the water just off a secluded beach, closer than she would normally get to the shore. Her view of the surface from below the water was distorted, but as far as she could tell it didn’t seem like a particularly special or interesting place. A bar of soft near-white sand lay between piles of rocks that stretched out into the water a ways. The sun shone overhead, warm but not scorching, with few clouds to interrupt its glow. It was quiet. Peaceful. This was definitely the place that her runes had led her to, but she couldn’t understand why - until she noticed the lone man on the shore.
The insistent tugging in her mind when she spotted him meant that he must be the reason she’d come. He was the only thing there, after all - and some sense in the back of her mind told her he was more than meets the eye.
Hoping she wasn’t making a mistake, she took a proverbial leap of faith and came up to the surface of the water. Her long green tail drifted behind her, visible if you squinted.
Though, now that she was there, she wasn’t quite sure what she was supposed to do. Approaching humans on purpose wasn’t exactly something you did every day as a species who usually avoided them at all costs.
Sea of Stars
from-ash-and-stardust:
The soft thud against the boat didn’t go unnoticed, nor did the squeak and splash that followed. Reme bolted upright and looked to either side of the boat. What could that have possibly been? There were no boats in sight, and it was improbable that a fish would come anywhere near her. Not to mention a fish of the size needed to make a sound that audible.
Perhaps it was a stray piece of garbage? That seemed most likely, but trash wouldn’t have made the squeaking noise… Reme leaned over the side of the boat to get a better look. Unfortunately she seemed to lean a little to far. The boat tilted over and she fell into the water with a large splash.
When she got back to the surface, gasping for air, she clung to the side of the boat. “Fuck mother of- Uhg.” On her first attempt to pull herself back into the boat she tipped it - once again - too far and fell right back in. There was another string of quiet swears as she tried to get back in a second time.
The lone human plunged over the side of her little boat, and Aukai winced. That... was probably her fault. At least she wasn’t sinking.
Any other mer would have gone far away as soon as they noticed the boat - especially seeing as it was occupied - but Aukai couldn’t bring herself to leave. Watching her try and fail to pull herself back up made up her mind further, and her runes were blessedly quiet, which sealed it.
Slowly, she glided over to the other side of the boat and grabbed onto the edge to anchor it - the human would never make it back up if it kept tipping, and she couldn’t exactly swim all the way back to shore.
And if she ended up noticing her... it probably wouldn’t be the end of the world. The runes would have warned her if it was.
Sea of Stars
{@ocean-runes liked for a starter with Reme!}
The night air was crisp out at sea. Faint moonlight reflected against the tranquil waves as they rocked the small paddle boat lazily. Funny how calming the water could be when there wasn’t a storm to disrupt it. It was enough to lull someone to sleep. But this wasn’t the best time to take a nap.
Reme had gone out there to get a view of the meteor shower that was to take place that night, and nothing more. She figured the light pollution would be minimal to non existent, and rented a boat as soon as she could. She was laying down on the bottom of the boat, looking up and keeping her eyes locked on the sky. She almost didn’t mind the distinct feeling of solitude with a view as breathtaking as this was.
If only there were someone to share the sight with.
Aukai knew she wasn’t supposed to go up to the surface, but she honestly didn’t care.
It was a perfect night - no fierce waves to battle with, and no clouds to cover up the stunning display of the sky. Her textbooks had pictures of the stars, but nothing could beat the real thing. Even the bioluminescent plankton that drifted in this ocean, like stars in their own right, couldn’t compare.
She drifted along at the surface on her back, gaze fixed on the celestial display above. She didn’t notice the little boat behind her until she bumped into it. Startled, she dove back underwater with a squeak, though she didn’t go very far. What was such a tiny boat doing all the way out here?
Were they stargazing, too?

Stormy Seas

Reme slowly nodded in response to the questions as her own began to swim around through her mind. “Uhh… I well… I wasn’t particularly worried per say…” she mumbled, her throat beginning to ache. Her chest still felt heavy, and talking was easily taking her breath away.
“Fine… Are you…?” She had to choose her words carefully, and granted this situation had her holding back the many other questions she had, but she immediately regret asking that. It sounded so stupid when it came out.
“I mean…” She shook her head to clear away the foggy haze that plagued her thought process. “I assume that you dragged me out here… Thank you for that. I guess I owe you one.” She kept her eyes locked on the stranger’s face, knowing full well that if she allowed her gaze to wander it would go straight for the tale.
Aukai sighed happily and smiled, her eyes still closed. “Good. I’m okay, too. It was lucky this land was so close by; I’m not sure I could’ve carried you much farther in that storm without you drowning.”
She opened her eyes to find the other girl staring directly at her face. She blushed and glanced away. “Um. You’re welcome. I couldn’t just leave you to drown...” Technically, she should’ve never been up at the surface near a boat in the first place. She was glad she had been.
She looked back at the human she’d saved and tried to make conversation. “I’m Aukai, by the way.” She had questions, and the other probably had more, but it seemed rude to continue on without introducing herself.

Purple’s a Nice Colour
themanofgloom:
“Good,” the man hissed, grinning menacingly. “Seeing others in pain is always the great pleasure that satisfies my being. You understand that feeling? Hm?” His eyes beamed, but it wasn’t of a sparkling friendliness.
If he were to be honest, that was one of the only things that actually made him feel joy. Seeing others - his enemies, of course - scream in terror in both physical and mental agony. Except Rudy, of course. Nothing, absolutely nothing was allowed to hurt his kid. His damn human kid. And if they were to hurt her, they would-
He shook the thought away. Ormad didn’t consider being afraid for Rudy’s life weak, however, it would’ve been strange for a stranger to find out his weakness right away. That was what he hated the most. That was a new emotion he found; a protectiveness over the people
If any of those thoughts made way to his physical expression, he didn’t show it.
But he couldn’t hold back the comment.
“….especially to the ones who hurt who you love,” he added. “I’d like to see them scream and watch their humanity slowly peel from existence.”
She frowned, hands going to play with a stray lock of her hair. That wasn’t exactly what she’d had in mind. In fact, seeing others in pain was one of the worst things she could imagine. She was familiar with pain. Every time something important was going to happen, her runes... they wouldn’t let her ignore it. Anything urgent gave her migraines or worse. Aukai had learned to grin and bear it, and it never lasted long when she read the message, but she would never wish it on anyone else, no matter if they “deserved” it or not. The mermaid in the picture was her.
Some might say it was even her responsibility to prevent others from coming to harm. That was the point of the Rune Bearer, yes? To protect and guide the merfolk? She hated when others got hurt - so, no, she didn’t understand the feeling. She didn’t say anything about it, but some of her discomfort showed on the surface.
It was almost fascinating seeing someone with a worldview so different to her own. They weren’t entirely separate, though. She looked at him head on. “So you have someone you love, then? What are they like?”
She settled down on a rock pile that jutted out from the sand. Part of her tail rubbed up against a rough patch of the stone, scraping off a tiny section of the paint covering her runes. It wasn’t much, but a few glowing scales were shining through, shifting in intensity.
