Bronze and I have been talking about getting married. It’s not sudden or surprising but it’s still exciting. Nothing’s locked in place yet but we’ve lived together for more than a year and knew each other before that and, yes. This is who I want to raise a child with.

Um the rest of this is me talking about how great Bronze is, so.

She likes dogs. That’s important about her. If we lived in a universe where dogs didn’t exist, she would still be a-person-who-would-like-dogs-if-she-ever-found-them. We don’t have one but she works as a dog groomer and she’d like to get one someday. She says dogs are real and I don’t feel the same way but I kind of know what she means.

All during spring she tries to avoid babies and baby pictures and baby talk and it’s so much harder than for me, who looks at all the pictures I can find. But her niece is her niece and she loves being around her and watching the two of them together is beautiful.

We get along so well. We don’t literally never disagree but it doesn’t become anything more than a disagreement and we don’t mind.

She likes poetry and sports and my photos and when she wants to do something she does it - and my coherence has run out all of a sudden, and right now I’m just going to flop on my bed and smile a lot -

because, you know what else, she wants to marry me.

Would you move to the moon for a credit?

Depends? Like if I had to raise the kid there then no, that wouldn’t be good for them. So it would have to be post-kid, but how soon, and how much time can I spend visiting Amenta... and as is I’ll probably get a credit but I’m not sure what I’d do on a moon, so if it was just one credit on offer I’d stay here, but if I could also definitely earn a second one on the moon then yes if everyone comes with me? Anyway! I’m way overthinking this but overall probably not no.

When there is a thing I want to do - or, no, when there is a thing I want to have already done - and I am not doing it, sometimes it is like there is a wall between it and me, made of brilliant layers of kaleidoscope paper and butterfly wings, and it sits there for a long time, and then one day I look at it and try to see what’s behind it - maybe it’s a small thing, maybe organizing my desk - and I spin the very first layer until there’s a gap before me, or a transparent place, and I can see a little better; and later I look over at it again, and turn the next layer, and a little later the next, each into its place, and so on, and on; and eventually there is a clear view all the way through to the other side, and I can see, and I know what to do, and I do it - and that’s the easy part -

and the wall, no longer mattering, shreds itself into butterflies and blows away in the wind.

How does it make you feel that ignorant reds get to change their caste while deserving clean caste members like you can't? If a red were going to become green before me, I'd be pretty upset.

Yes, it’s unfair. But the solution to this isn’t to stop reds testing into other castes. It’s to let other people do it too.

The reason reds are being allowed to switch castes at this point is that we’re transitioning away from needing reds, so it doesn’t upset caste balances to let them all swap out. In a few more years, that might start to be true of purples as automation improves, then maybe purples will start being allowed to test into other castes. If someone figures out how to automate wars, the same might happen to greys.

Or, maybe, if integrating reds goes well enough, some governments might start trialling programmes to let people swap castes if they pass a test, as long as there’s someone swapping the other way. That would preserve the necessary caste balances too. Yes, I know, there are a million problems with that - you’d get people trying to game the system by going purple to buy a purple credit, then swapping back to green, etc. But I’m not blue, and I’m not a policy maker, and I’m sure those who are could think of ways to patch those loopholes.

How do you feel about non-miliarty greys?

When I was younger I thought it was a corruption of the ideal of being grey. Like, fuck the idea of grey as some kind of ~caste for non-cripples~ that exists because no other caste can run to the bus stop without getting out of breath. We’re the steel caste, it’s about protecting people, being warriors. The stuff we do in peacetime is busywork, and tbh I still kind of hate it when people elevate it above that.

I’m ex-military now so I guess I am one. I don’t know how I feel about that. I don’t feel any less grey?

Police seem pretty okay. But dance should be green and sex work should be orange. It’s that way in some countries but it should be that way in all of them.

I think every grey should have to do some amount of military service. I don’t think you really know your body until you’ve pushed it to the fucking limit because you’re in terror for your life. Being around greys who have never been military, I sometimes feel like a stranger in my own damn caste. Dancers might spend as much time working out as I do, but that’s a trivial surface thing. They’re not going to get it. They’re perfectly nice people but they’re not my caste.

You can tell when they get faced with situations like killing criminal reds or whatever. The non military ones who flinch and can’t think about it… I at least hope they can avoid having kids and passing on those genes. Nobody should be born grey with that attitude.

What’s wrong with identifying with a smaller group than your entire caste? You can be military and think the military is better than everyone else and all, without trying to cut all the rest of the caste out of it.
