Jaime X Brienne Fic Exchange 2020 Recs

So after I juuuuuuuuuust managed to get my own fic exchange story posted under the deadline for the author reveal, I decided it would be only fair to read everyone else’s efforts.  I finished that endeavor yesterday (or was it the day before??) and thought I’d offer a few recommendations for those not crazy enough to tackle reading over 100 stories ranging in size from 1008 words to 58,182.

The Evenstar Job by Miera:  When I saw that someone had given a prompt for a Leverage AU, my first thought was, “Damn, why didn’t I think of that?”  This story is amazing.  You don’t need to have seen the show to read this fic–the author gets the story setup very fast.  It’s a story of found family, Robin Hood-type antics, and of course, a romance between Jaime and Brienne.

Federation Fliers by Ladybugbear2: This author took less than 2200 words to create an entire world.  This story is so beautiful and Jaime understands Brienne perfectly that I wish there was more to this universe.

To a Distant Stranger by LadyRhiyana: I love this story, with rockstar Jaime taking a job as a bartender at Brienne’s bar because he’s so fascinated by her.  I love the image of Jaime playing a guitar shirtless in his hotel room the morning after he’s been with Brienne.  *chef’s kiss*

The Riverlands Gang Go to the Zoo by NaomiGnome: A team-building exercise finds Hyle trying to make a move on Brienne and finding her attention constantly monopolized by Jaime.  This story was hilarious and includes a bear, a mean-tempered lioness named Cersei, and Hyle Hunt being totally clueless.

Codename: Kingslayer by LibKat.  Jaime’s a jewel thief being pursued by recovery agent Brienne…but things take an interesting twist toward the end.  A fun, light-hearted story.

The Knight and the Thief by ddagent: Another story featuring Jaime as a thief who breaks into Brienne’s home at a most unfortunate time for Brienne.  I love their conversation between the wall and the ending is just delightful.

Innocent by PrioritiesSorted:  Gods, this story is amazing and heartbreaking and, at the end, romantic.  It has one of the best lines I’ve read in a fic: I am a woman and I lost my innocence with my first blood. The world said my girlhood was done and I could never be innocent again. If you asked your sister I imagine she’d tell you the same.  Yowza.

Jaime, Brienne, and the Bachelor Party on Wheels by EmpressM: If you’ve never seen a bunch of drunken fools pedaling around town on a party bike, you’re missing out.  This is a hilarious story about one such party.

The One That Got Away by angelowl: Just when Brienne thought she’d finally get a chance to put high school behind her, she finds out part of it followed her to college: Jaime.  A series of drinking games leads to them talking about “the one that got away,” with one of them being completely clueless about who the other is talking about.  Angelowl’s stories are always incredible, and this is no exception.

Love Isn’t a Sprint, It’s a Marathon by auntie_social: I am in awe at how the author was able to hit the major beats of Jaime and Brienne’s canon trip through the Riverlands throughout a 26.2-mile race.  Amazing and hilarious–and there’s now artwork to go along with it!!

Rain of a Thousand Dying Stars by Cerulean_Phoenix7: This is a story I might not have taken a look at if it hadn’t been part of the fic exchange because I’ve never seen Blade Runner.  Now that I’ve read the story (and I really do hope that the author writes a sequel!), I’ve got Blade Runner on my list of movies to see.  :)

because of you (I took my time to come around) by Weboury: Oh my God–it’s Jaime, Brienne, and Cleos (that’s right–Cleos!!!) on a modern-day road trip through the Riverlands, with a guest appearance by Vargo (the Goat).  I couldn’t stop laughing through this story!

Try a Little Tenderness by dreadwulf: There’s just so much tenderness and caretaking in this story–on both Jaime and Brienne’s parts–that melted my heart.  So, so beautiful.

Right Off the Bat by hillaryschu: Take Jaime and Brienne as rival Little League baseball coaches and give them anonymous Twitter accounts–where they’re starting to fall for each other–and what do you get?  This wonderful story!!!

Dancing with the Wind by majoris: well of course I’m going to give another plug to the story that was written for me!!  Inspired by Strictly Ballroom, but again, you don’t need to have seen the movie to enjoy this story. *draws hearts around this fic*

I know I’m missing out on recommending a ton of great stories, but I wanted to highlight some of the ones that really stood out to me.  :)

There’s a moan and then an expected “Oh my gods, marry me, Bluebell.” 

They’re cookies, and she got them from the store. 

But still, he proposes.

As he’s been doing for the last 8 years.

It had started in college, they had been assigned as partners in a required chemistry class and had quickly gone from hating each other, to becoming begrudging allies in the face of Dr. Tarly’s archaic ideas of teaching, to being best friends, over the course of about 3 months. 

The proposals were harmless at first, it had started as a joke, or at least, she had assumed it was a joke.

They had been up late studying and she had gone on a coffee run. She’d learned his coffee order by this point and, though she preferred tea, it wasn’t like remembering a coffee order was difficult. 

But he’d taken a sip and looked at her as if she was the Maiden in the flesh.

And then he’d done it. He’d said it. 

“Marry me, Bluebell.” 

She’d snorted and rolled her eyes, doing her best to hide her response to his dumb nickname that always made her feel like the ice cream more than the flower that he claimed was the inspiration. 

She’d allow herself to take out the whole interaction and turn it over in her mind later when she wasn’t being faced with the full force of her best friend.

He’d smirked at her predictable reaction and they’d both gone back to studying as if nothing at all had happened. Well, Brienne supposed, nothing actually had happened. 

It was only later that night in her dorm room that she’d sat on her bed and screamed a bit into her pillow about the fact that she’d actually heard the words “Marry me” directed at her. 

Not seriously of course. 

Brienne was well aware of what she looked like and what Jaime looked like. She was under no ridiculous notions that anything would ever happen between her and her best friend. So she had taken it as a joke and moved on. 

But then he’d done it again a few weeks later at the student union when she bought him a sandwich after he’d realized he left his wallet in his dorm room. 

And again when they were at the climbing wall in the student rec center and he’d forgotten his climbing shoes so she’d loaned him an extra pair that she had in her locker. They were purple. He looked hilarious. But still he said in that ridiculously serious voice, “Marry me, Bluebell”. 

Jaime had continued to “conveniently” forget his wallet, and so Brienne had continued to buy him coffee, or lunch, or any number of things that meant he would ask his dumb question. 

It continued like that for years.

headcanons for my fic ‘It’s Just a Fact. Everybody Knows.’

A few people asked if I would write the fic from Jaime and Brienne’s POV. I kind of toyed around with it last night, and frankly, I think the fic just works better the way it is. HOWEVER. I have MANY headcanons! I will now share.

The book canon age difference for Jaime and Brienne applies here, so somewhere between 12 and 14 years;

Brienne started teaching there when she was fresh out of university. She was super nervous and she shows up and there’s this uber-hottie boy’s coach;

It doesn’t help that said uber-hottie thinks it’s hilarious how quickly she blushes at the slightest provocation;

Brienne doesn’t realize that uber-hottie, who turns out to be Jaime Lannister, who is positively coated in gold, from his skin to his hair to his trust fund) is absolutely enchanted by this gangly, wide-eyed, shy woman;

Jaime spends 3 years flirting with Brienne. It goes over her head every single time. Most of the time, she even gets – well it seems like her feelings are hurt???? 

Jaime relays this to Tyrion. Tyrion laughs until he cries and can’t stop laughing and Jaime hangs up on him;

Tyrion eventually texts him back with some tips on how to maybe not taunt the woman you’re into;

It still doesn’t work and one day after school Jaime just flat-out tells her, “I have been trying to flirt with you since the first day you started and I don’t know if I’m really bad at it or you’re really bad at noticing or maybe some of the both but for fuck’s sake will you go out with me?”;

Yes, that is accurate punctuation for the run on madness of his nervous speech;

Brienne is flummoxed and stutters and squints at him and glares and accuses him of fucking with her;

Jaime puts his hands on her waist and drags her in and he’s like “Please don’t report me for sexual harassment for this” and kisses the ever-loving fuck out of her;

She has to concede he was telling the truth. And okay. Yes. She has also wanted to kiss the fuck out of him since day one, much to her continued chagrin, because he is such an ass but he is so hot and she thought she was above that;

They’ve been dating about two years by the time Arya starts at the school and living together for six months;

Yes, Jaime really does piss her off a lot on the bus because he’s like a child stuck on a car trip. Also because he enjoys singing under his breath off-key, particularly shitty pop songs. Brienne finds it a little concerning that he knows so much Britney Spears and Katy Perry;

Sometimes, the reason she blushes and glares and stomps off is because he mumbles something that could sound innocuous but that Brienne knows means something dirty re: the two of them and it;

Brienne told Jaime repeatedly, repeatedly, that if he ever proposed to her in public, she would say no;

Jaime proposes at Homecoming because he just cannot resist the temptation to mess with her a little. He has the band play Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream because that’s the song that seems to annoy Brienne the absolute most. … But he catches her humming it constantly;

That night it turns out that since he didn’t have the ring (because he knew she’d say no anyway), Brienne assumed he was making fun of her (which he does frequently, but usually in a dumb way not a cruel way), so Jaime has to reach into his bedside table and pull out the absolute honker of a ring;

Brienne protests about how big it is. Jaime points out that his family is loaded and makes a dick joke about how he thought she liked obscenely large things;

Brienne almost punches him, but instead she suddenly gets overwhelmed and cries and Jaime panics because what if she’s trying to tell him no for real and then she sees his face and cries harder and squeaks out a “you fucking idiot, of course I’ll marry you.”;

They get married the summer before Arya’s senior year on Tarth. Tyrion is the best man, none of Jaime’s other family members are invited (Tywin doesn’t approve of Brienne, and Cersei is a goddamn nightmare wearing human skin). Brienne’s dad gives her away. She wears blue, because white is patriarchal nonsense. And she looks like a ghost in it. And Jaime likes her in blue;

Arya tells them on graduation day that she’s the one that locked them in the equipment shed her Freshman year and she’s sorry about being a dumb kid, but also, she’s glad they got together and seem happy;

Jaime almost never stops laughing that she thought that was the first time they –;

Brienne slaps her hand over his mouth and tells Arya she doesn’t need to apologize, no harm, no foul. 

They live happily ever after.

The sensations were always dull on the best of days–those were days he counted himself lucky, days where he couldn’t feel his missing hand itching. Yet it wasn’t the stump that was aflame with feeling now, but the rest of his body–alive from a combination of the heat of the room, the ale buzzing through his veins, and the brush of Brienne’s lips as she brought them to the deadened end of his forearm.

She kept her eyes closed and her lips pressed together, as if in a benediction over his missing hand. Then, softly as he had ever heard her speak, she said, “I never thanked you.”

He flinched, the memories breaking through his mental wall as a dam bursts–the unnameably long days tied to Brienne back-to-back on the horse to Harrenhall, the stench of his rotting stump wafting up to gag him. They made her clean his beard when he retched, his legs when he soiled himself. They made her hold him when he fainted. It was a thankless task. He should be on his knees thanking her for keeping him alive.

Jaime shook his head. “I was craven in those days, truly.” His words drew her eyes up to his, a mixture of shock and near-unreadable openness on her face. He plowed ahead, taking her free hand in his good hand: “You are the first person who ever believed in me, Brienne. The first, in my entire life. I wouldn’t be here today if not for you. I’d be dead, protecting my sister most like. You saved me,” he breathed, dropping her hand to cup her cheek instead. Her face grew fuzzy for a moment, and then he realized that tears had welled unbidden in his eyes. He blinked them away, certain she saw them, certain he didn’t care any more–let her see, let her understand that the Kingslayer was dead, and that the Oathkeeper was here with her.

“I love you, Ser Brienne of Tarth. I love you for who you are, and because you saved me.”

The silence that proceeded this admission roared in his ears. He felt a little dizzy, truth be told. He forced himself to look up at her eyes again, but as he did, she wiggled closer to him on the bed, bringing their chests together. She rested her head on his shoulder and looked down at where his stump lay on his lap. He felt her face hot against his skin, and finally she breathed, “I love you too, Jaime.”

And in that night, high within the cold stone walls of Winterfell where the wind and snow raged outside, Jaime held Brienne and knew an immutable truth: that the spring thaws would one day come; that they had braved the winter and would hereafter find the sunshine together.
