Well, it's happened. The Speakeasily gang has been accused of being "astoundingly sexist and racist" after recently screening this video at a live event. Apparently "the lady with her legs spread in the sofa" and "throwing shit on the black guy" are universally unacceptable. So let me say this about people who narrowly see what they want to see: my legs weren't spread (so who is the pervert now?!) and that's not "the black guy," that's Shecky Davis Jr., a comedian with free will of his own to be funny in any way he sees fit. Comedy and burlesque should be challenging. Women and people of color have a responsibility to bring this to their art. If you're not at that level of understanding, it's surprising you came to a burlesque show. Or left the house in this day in age. The wonderful women who performed last night were all empowered individuals on a stage of their own choosing. That's power. Yes, Speakeasily is obsessed with the boundaries between surreal and shtick, intellectual and gross-out, counterculture and trash culture...and we are making our own art.
