[ i swear to god i'll get on and do some replies this thursday ]
There were definite perks to having not moved apartments this year. His father had been gunning for him to move to one of the nicer complexes on the other side of town, but Jon had argued that it wouldn’t make sense for him to be further from campus and that he liked where he lived just fine. He knew most of his neighbors, and Gary and Raoul were just down the hall. Truthfully, Jon knew his father had mostly given in because Gary and Raoul could look after him, but he’d gotten his way, so he wasn’t going to nit pick about it.
Not when Delia and Josiane were still just as into him as they’d been before the end of the year and had been coming over all summer to ‘keep him company’ since his parents were out of the country for the summer.
Keeping him company meant keeping him up all night, but he couldn’t really complain about that considering they were both flexible and open minded in the best ways.
In fact, they’d been at it for most of the night, even though they all started classes the next morning. Jon had a nine am bio class, but he wasn’t going to turn either of the girls away until he literally fell asleep.
And that didn’t seem to be happening any time soon.
It was in the middle of one of their breaks for water and snacks that the pounding on the door made Jon jump. After assuring the girls that he’d send whoever it was away as soon as possible, he stepped into his pants, not bothering to zip them up before he went to the door.
"Little late for social calls, isn’t it?" Jon asked, arching an eyebrow at the small redhead standing at his door.
"Oh this isn't a social call, jackass."
Alanna snapped at him, crossing her arms over her chest as she glared at the much taller boy. No wonder she was so pissed off- this guy looked like a complete jackass- never mind the whole having sex for 5 hours straight- he looked like every jock asshole come to life from high school. God she thought she left these guys behind years ago- did they have to exist everywhere?
"Stop fucking your girlfriends over my room at 3 fucking am. I want to get some god damn sleep before I start my classes tomorrow. I don't want to hear you and them rocking the bed and screaming about shit."
She shoved a finger hard into the center of his chest- making him take a step back from her. Despite her tiny size, she could be quite intimidating if she tried.
"Got it?"
Alanna didn’t speak. She just looked, and listened. She looked at his hair. His skin. His hands. His eyes- and she didn’t see someone who wasn’t in love. He seemed to radiate the feeling- his face a glow, his whole body shifting back and forth. As she listened, she took note of his ramblings, the stress in his voice, the need to have Alanna approve of this union-
-and all she could to was let the smallest of smiles slip across her lips.
“I believe you- and I’ll hold you up on that promise.”
Aly’s mother’s eyes were unnerving. They certainly were not the color of eyes that most humans had, and Nawat could feel his skin prickle wherever her gaze swept. But it was more than that too—the intensity behind those eyes. Aly had said before that her mother was driven and now Nawat could see how much of an understatement that was. If this woman told a mountain to move, it would get to it on the double and ask if she wanted its neighbors to do so as well. The crow man quelled under the gaze, holding his breath without realizing it.
Only for it to escape in a gratefully whoosh. “Thank you! And I will keep my promise.”
"I don't think I ever thought I'd get a crow for a son-in-law."
Alanna murmured, shaking her head as she finally allowed a smile to appear on her face, the seriousness of her expression fading away slowly. The need to look threatening had passed- for now.
"Though, you're a welcome addition to our myriad of a family."
“No damage- but I think my cloak has seen better days than this. It’ll take weeks before all the dirt from the road comes out. A free disguise I suppose.”
She takes his hand- allowing the dwarf to help her to her feet, offering a smile.
“Sorry for running into you in the first place- I was in a slight hurry.”
He gives a light laugh at her response, brushing his hands along his pants to get rid of the dirt as he does so.
"Well I’m sorry for being in your way. I was admiring the scenery, and not watching where I was going. If I’d been paying attention, I wouldn’t be rambling like a fool now. Forgive me?”
"The scenery is quite nice, so I suppose I cannot put you at fault."
A grin split across her lips, shaking her head.
"I suppose I can forgive you."
Send "Can I kiss you?" to see how my muse responds.
There’s plenty more fish in the sea than Prince Jonathan, and this particular fish loves you with all his crooked heart.
”It’s called sticking his nose into my business—”
"I would very much like t’keep bot’ o’my ears, thank you….So bear wit’ me, then y’can go tell ‘is Majesty yer complaints.”
"Or you could just go and tell him yourself."
”That’s the lady knight, right? Alanna of Trebond?”
The flower seller asked him, still holding his wrist like a vice as the two watched the procession move down the street, in the direction of the castle. Her voice was breathless- and she stared at the former rogue with rapt attention, waiting for his reply hungrily.
Alanna herself was refusing to lift her head- her face hidden by a mop of dirty red hair, though the occasional glimpse of her bright purple eyes could be seen, both of them directed towards her feet. Said feet were dragging on the Earth- unable to lift them completely to take a step forward, the chains the knights had applied too heavy for her to move easily.
The two knights that were escorting her had daughter her when her guard was down- she’d been too close to the Tortall border, too close to home- it’d been easy for them to track her down and trap her while she slept. She’s woken from her death like slumber only when they’d snapped the cold manacles around her wrists. They’d told her then that they’d been sent by King Jonathan to take her prisoner, and bring her to Corus for her crimes against the king- where she would stand trial and receive punishment for her deeds. Her abandonment of her post- her act of treason. She knew very well that treason was punishable by death- and that now she marched towards it with open arms and an open heart.
It took an hour with the crowds surrounding them to get to the palace- the knights moving purposefully slow to allow the people of Corus a look at the disgraced knight, to soak in the meaning of her capture. By the time Alanna reached the gates, she was sweating, the heat of the summer sun soaking into her, exhaustion beginning to weigh her down. Thankfully, at that point, the two knights grabbed her arms, and practically carried her into the dungeons of the castle, moving her down stairs upon stairs until they threw her into her cell, locking the door behind them.
Leaving Alanna alone.
❛ — and Olau. ❜
His words were the croak of a frog, voice half-eaten by shock. The sound of his heartbeat soon drowned all sounds, and all he could see was her hair, her hands, her eyes, her, her, her. Her locks, once shining like copper in the sun’s beams, were the same color as a trampled rose. Dirty hands were held together in shackles, which look like they could eat through any patch of skin and flesh if given enough time. They were marred with scars, and though he had seen them before — he had kissed every single one — the sight of them inspired an icy chill to travel down his spine and raise the hairs on his arms.
When he finally moved, it was in a daze. Without thinking of his own strength, he violently shook the flower seller’s hand off him, and immediately ran in the opposite direction of the king’s knights and their prisoner his knight. Being the second Spymaster in command came with certain perks, and one of these was intimate knowledge of the castle. In no time, he moved through secret corridors, all leading to one, specific place: the dungeons. If the shackles around Alanna’s wrists and ankles had told him one thing, it was that they intended on locking her behind solid, metal bars.
He arrived, heart in his throat, hope resting unsafely on his shoulder. His body was cloaked in darkness and moved among shadows. Only few cells were unoccupied. He was forced to walk past more misery than he had seen in the entirety of his life in less than a minute. However, his mind was reeling at a too fast pace, and he had no thoughts to spare for strangers.
The dark enveloped her. Even though it was the middle of the day, no sunlight reached them down here. Small fires kept the cells poorly lit. George had never been more pleased with his Sight, as it allowed him to study her without having to step closer to the light.
She had never looked so small before. Her temper had always counted for the foot that separated them. Now, however, it looked like it had faded away. It looked like everything had faded away, for that matter. Everything but an empty shell. George swallowed thickly. How had this girl ever been his Lioness ?
Alanna felt consumed by the darkness that surrounded her. On every side of her it lay, pressing against her skin, moving ever closer and closer as the braziers that burned outside her cage ran lower and lower on fuel. She was curling into a ball slowly- burying her face in her knees as she rocked slightly, eyes shut tightly against the world that surrounded her.
This was not the first dungeon she'd been subjected to in the last seven years.
"Who's there?"
She croaked, her voice weak as she pressed herself against the wall, her hands curled into tight fists at either side of her as she stared at the figure that was outlined behind the bars that imprisoned her. Perhaps Jon had come to guilt trip her- or maybe she was already being brought to her execution, for surely she wouldn't be allowed to live after the betrayal she'd offered the king.
"Show yourself--"
”Alright, so you know where I have to deliver that line about how I don’t trust Roger? I was told to act all passionate- but I’m sort of finding it hard to make it sound like I care.”
❛ I'm guessing you've tried channeling your personal distaste towards the character, so… hm… I suppose — Is there anyone you don’t trust ? Imagine that person getting close to the people you love. They’ve done nothing wrong, but you just have a feeling they will, and nobody’s listening to you. Frustration is a type of passion, I’d say. ❜
"I mean, I suppose I don't have anyone I don't trust-- I've sort of lived a sheltered life, Grant."
“Thom for god’s sake—”
Alanna had been about to try maybe another bottle of warm milk on Thom, the third that night, when someone knocked on her apartment door. Soon after, a distinctly male voice called to her- and her shoulders sagged with relief. God, Liam had finally shown up to help her— though as soon as his name rolled across her thoughts, a flash of anger snapped through her.
Striding to the door with Thom still crying like mad in her arms, she ripped the door open, shooting who she presumed to be Liam the harshest glare she could manage while holding a chubby baby.
”Where the hell have you been I’ve needed help for hours- Was a fight really more important than-“
She froze mid sentence however, as she looked into the eyes of a man who was most certainly, not Liam Ironarm.
“I— sorry I thought you were someone else.”
Alanna said lamely, as she bounced her son up and down in her arms, her cheeks suddenly a very dark red.
George was hit with a wave of animosity as soon as the door was opened. In front of him stood a very short, very angry redhaired girl, obviously no older than twenty-five. In her arms was the source of his sleeplessness, wailing as if it had seen a monster. Or perhaps he — she ? it ?— could feel the mother’s emotions. That was often the case with children. George knew as much from his long nights of babysitting Rispah’s kids.
As the color of her cheeks changed, he realized that her anger had not been directed at him. The baby daddy, he guessed. It was not a difficult conclusion to draw. However, it did make him vaguely worried about this baby; it could not be much fun to be around mom and dad. Of course, it wasn’t George’s place to even consider this stranger’s relationship.
What worried him more was the constant crying from the smallest redhead. ❛ You’re obviously in need of help, ❜ he stated matter-of- factly. Too tired to think of consequences — although, one could argue if he ever did — George expertly plucked the child from its mother. Before he could be attacked once more, this time perhaps even violently, he rocked the child gently. Not even ten seconds later, the wailing quieted some. Although the baby was still sniffling, it was a relief.
"I-- what? You can't just grab someone's child and-"
She stops however in whatever she was saying however- frozen as she stares at her babe in the strangers arms, completely quiet. Alanna hadn't seen him this calm in hours-
It actually kind of hurt to see her baby stop crying for some man he'd never met. It made her heart twist uncomfortably- an ache rising up in her throat. Was she that bad of a mother that Thom needed a stranger to care for him to feel like he was safe? That he was loved?
"... I... thanks. But really- I don't need your help."
She muttered, extending her hands to take her baby back- but as soon as her hands brushed against his skin, his eyes began filling with tears, and she jerked her hand back, like she'd been stung.

Tamora Pierce is a bloody fantastic writer.
Earlier today I saw a post about how Tammy’s works were actually just a ciswhitefeminist’s fantasy, and how that blogger was disappointed because they used to love her work. For a second I would’ve agreed, but then I sat back and thought about it. (I will point out where this person might be getting this idea later) Hopefully, this will clear the air for any fans who might be doubting their love for Tammy.
She DOES have POC main characters. It sounded like the writer of the former post had only read Tortallan books. Both Daja and Briar are main characters with point of view in her Emelan series. Sandry is too and she’s mixed. Tris can be interpreted as mixed (there really is no reason against it). At least two of the teachers, Lark and Frostpine, are poc as well. Nico is speculated. Her second half of that series also features Evvy’s point of view in several books. The books are filled with people of different cultures.
In Tortall their are several poc characters but they are a bit harder to spot, especially because many people assume characters are white unless specified. FIRST OFF Verrildaine Sarrasi or DAINE is mixed in cannon (could be more obvious but its true). Her hair is an untameable mass of curls are frequently mentioned, and while she does have blue eyes and come from a place called snowsdale or something, her father is a god so who can be sure. The only thing I remember about her skin might have been freckles which people of darker skin can have. There is some cover art that shows her as pale, but that is usually the book publishers decision not the author.
Queen Thayat is half K’mir, which Tammy describes as ”Actually, they’re based partly on the Mongols in that they’re riders, partly on the Montagnard tribes of the central highlands of Vietnam, and a bit on the Maya at least in their facial bones. Their language is cobbled from the Montagnard. You may have some trouble tracking pictures of them down, but they come from similar aboriginal stock to the Laotian Hmong and Meo tribes and the Thai hill tribes. And their armor is a bit like the armor of the samurai, only it’s lacquer over bamboo in layers and cured to an iron-like consistency.” which makes all of her children 1/4 K’mir (horselords these are easier to find than I thought they would be). The fact isn’t brought up much after Lioness Rampant but it is mentioned by Onoa (a K’mir) in Daine’s series. Buri is also obviously K’mir.
Daine’s series has great (if mostly male) poc.First off, BAMF-most-powerful-sorcerer-main-love-interest-Numair who is based off of Jeff Goldblum. Sarge, and countless other residents of the castle are. Yes, Ozorne was the villain, but Kaddar was cool! As were the Doi tribesmen. Daine’s series was also hugely about the return of immortals which has many parallels to immigrants/refugees
Keladry’s entire story displays huge respect for the Yamani (Japan) and believes that 90% of her awesomeness came from learning from them (10% from Wyldon). Third and Fourth book include several females Yamanis including the fullblooded Yamani princess Shinkokami who is to marry the crown prince (1/4 K’mir) Also the Bazhir were constant side characters.
Where people might get confused: Now Alanna does come in a little western-white-feminist in Woman Who Rides Like A Man, but she learns. She learns so much about the Bazhir and recognizes that their values may be different but they are just as important. Also, I imagine that Aly might be a bit of the white-feminist-hero to many, but the poc people around her aren’t two dimensional, and they definitely aren’t dumb. On several occasions she is reminded of that. Not to mention every other white character in the books are complete asshats. And in case its not clear, all of these books have a huge cast of POC characters. WWRLaM: Ishak, Kara, Kourrem, Ali Mukhtab, Halef Seif, etc. Tricksters: Dove, Sarrai, Junai, Chenaol, Fesgao, Lokeij, Ochobu, Ulasim, Ysul, Zaimid, Etc.
Furthermore, I highly recommend her Tortall and Other Lands short story collection. A crossdressing female and a Islamic (equivalent) girl who wears a burqa cross paths and we readers get both points of view.
She writes queer characters. Remember the black girl Daja from Emelan? She’s gay. Rosethorn? Openly bisexual and not monogamous. Lark? Longterm relationship with Rosethorn and accepts her fully. Pretty certain Frostpine is asexual. There is a trans woman in Bloodhound (although she couldve been written better). Keladry is completely unphased by homosexuality and Lalasa is a lesbian. There is some talk that Keladry is ace. Now I’m all up for more aces, but she definitely had quite a few men who caught her eye, and there was that whole thing with Cleon. However, I still believe that demisexual is a possibility this has nothing to do with me being demi and idolizing her.
Sure, we can always have more poc and queers in books, but I think Tammy does a pretty bang up job humanizing these people and writing realistic backgrounds. Not to mention how fantastic she writes females in general, and points out so many other issues (classism, education, etc). So if your feeling concerned, reread Tortall, reread Emelan, and reread Tortall and Other Lands. Sorry its long, and I’m probably forgetting quite a few people, so message me if you see any or just want to talk about Tamora Pierce.
(Edit: thank you everyone who left comments about people I forgot/corrections)
