“A flower for you, good sir,” Alice spotted Atlas by the window, bouncing up to him, glad to have finally found him. The lavender Calla Lily in her hand was almost as tall as she was, Alice had no shame in carrying it around and felt triumphant in having it in her grasp.“You would not believe what I had to go through to find this. School’s been bonkers, hasn’t it? It’s been absolutely CRAZY for me, positively mad, I feel like I need a nap.”

“Thank you, kind lady,” he replied, grin firm on his lips at the sight of his favorite ( and only, but nevermind that detail ) cousin. The flower was admittedly tall even compared to him - not that he was taller than Alice to begin with - but it was also incredibly beautiful, the kind of thing that he had sketched even in the thrall of war. “Given that Calla Lilies are only found in Greenhouse Six and only the other side of the lake, I can guess. You know it has been a LOT just shy of being too much, I could go for a nap. Hufflepuff is friendly territory if you wanted to head there.”

the grin faulters for a second and then it returns, ‘ how do you think they’re dealing with that ? do they just have extra prefects running around - are there potentially three head boys? there’s an idea, give us more guidance and triple the quidditch teams.”

“The world. So you are saying there is one world that split up into many shards. Hmm, that’s new. I’ve never heard that theory before,” Jasmine said sincerely, biting at her lip unconsciously. “Oh, but we don’t know about that. Those not in this would could be in another world where they existed, could they not? We could go on forever.”

“I mean the world whenever it started, would all be the same - slowly splitting off as different events take place, until there are unlimited versions of the world. Ours would all have to be fairly similar, all of our ancestors choosing to have children and choosing the same names regardless of other circumstances.” He wrinkled his nose at the thought and shrugged. “I suppose they could be, I do wonder what other worlds I exist in.”

A smile formed on Emmeline’s lips. “Well- We’ll just have to see then.” The conversation told her that this was in fact the atlas she knew. “It’s a lot of the team’s last year though, and you can bet we won’t go down without a fight.”

“We shall see, and we shall conquer,” he agreed, with a chuckle pausing to consider something expression almost dreamy for a second. “I hope I get to watch you guys trounce slytherin at least, nothing against the players but I’d much rather lose to lions than snakes.”

“I’ve been really good actually, not perfect, but you know me, I’m ever the optimist.” she said with a vague smirk, trying to quell the excitement that was still bubbling just under the surface.”This is all good for you isn’t it, not that its bad for me, not at all, but I’m really glad that things are better for you.” she said stepping back and looking in his eyes but not acknowledging tears.

“It’s definitely good for me, perfect really - compared to where I was at least,” he agrees with a grin. “I’m glad too, getting to see everyone that was gone is really really great. And I’m excited for this year and everything that might follow,” he said, rocking back and forth on his feet a bit. “I mean classes are going to be amazing and quidditch is going to be awesome - plus eating chocolate in Hogsmeade?” The rose coloured glasses were firmly in place.

HESTIA JONES.

                                   she  knows  she’s  made  the  conversation  slightly  awkward  ,  it’s  what  hestia  jones  always  does  best.  she  gave  him  a  small  smile  ,  reassuring  him  that  she  wasn’t  going  to  start  crying  on  him.  at  least  ,  not  until  a  few  more  drinks.  ❛  yeah  ,  the  ministry  is  going  to  be  working  day  &  night  until  the  problem  is  solved.  in  the  meantime  ,  i  say  we  try  &  enjoy  ourselves  the  best  we  can.  ❜

he sips his drink, considering the possibility of what the ministry would do. “and hey, maybe someone will fuck with them and we’ll get to watch - and laugh! if nothing else at least we’re not the poor suckers who came here and lost their prefect status. that’s gotta hurt.”

Jasmine nodded thoughtfully as she looked at the other. “But how would we know they ended? Did they? How would we define a world ending anyway?” She replies smoothly. “Besides, with each passing second, a world that could have been ends. So I suppose…I’ve answered my own question.” She giggles before turning serious. “In all honesty though, I agree, it does depend on everyone.”

“Does it even matter, in the end of it all - one world or another does it make a difference to those not in the world?” This world, up until a month ago could have ended and most of them would have been none the wiser. Hell, their original words could have ended when the timelines all flipped around. “Aside from being, why would it matter?”

with a small hum, cassia beamed — it was obvious she was just as enthusiastic, but his change in demeanor only heightened it. “we were in astronomy club! club meetings were some of my favorite times, to be honest.” it really was an escape and part of her wished her other selves enjoyed it just as much. “i am so happy it’s something you still enjoy.”

“i used to love astronomy club,” he mused, thinking that maybe this timeline swap was a chance to get into it. “i guess some things don’t change - that’s nice at least, reassuring if nothing else. i, uh to be upfront, didn’t know you that well in my timeline but maybe we could fix that?”

Emmeline laughed. “Oh I don’t know about that.” She took a sip from the drink in her hand. “Without a war going on Gryffindor will be far less distracted. I wouldn’t count on winning again.” She grinned widely. Talking about Quidditch was something that took her away from her problems. It would be nice to get back into the sport, without the war looming over all of their heads.

“Oh, it is going to happen,” he argued, grin still firmly in place and he quickly drank the rest of his drink. “You’re forgetting that we’ve escaped the war as well, so our focus will be right back where it belongs - on fully and completely proving that we’re the best.” The words would seem harsh if not for the tone and expression; it’s clear that Atlas is joking. “Still Gryffindor will surely come in as a close second.”

“Altas!” Ester called jogging up to her friend and wrapping her arms around him from behind. “I haven’t seen you all summer. How are you? This whole timeline thing is crazy, right. What do you remember? This is all so confusing. How are your folks I’m sorry I just keep talking, I got excited. How are you?”

“Ester!” And if his eyes shown with tears, he told himself that it could be dismissed as a trick of the light. “I remember a lot of things, but none of them have been good for a few years before the whole swap. My folks are,” he cuts off, the reality bringing tears to his eyes again but a smile to his face. “They’re good, they’re so good. It’s so good, I’m so good. Are you, are you okay?”

                                 the  question  hit  too  close  to  home  for  hestia.  it  was  one  that  she  pondered  constantly.  ❛  yes.  ❜  she  replied  meekly  ,  her  voice  nearly  breaking  ,  although  she  tried  to  maintain  her  composure.  ❛  if  i  could  go  back  before  everything  awful  ,  &  go  back  to  being  the  person  i  was  ,  i’d  do  it  in  a  heartbeat.  but…  i  can’t.  &  neither  can  you.  it’s  best  not  to  think  too  much  about  the  what  ifs  &  focus  on  right  now.  ❜   

                      he fidgeted, trying to keep from reaching out to comfort her - he hadn’t meant to upset the other, and now he regretted even asking. atlas sighed instead, hand twisting in one itself in an attempt to release a bit of nervous energy. ‘ yeah, you’re right. can’t change it, so i guess we should just leave it be. except you know, i think the ministry will probably be trying to fix it.’

MEADOWES, weren’t they on a first name basis at this point? Oh no. “In years? Well, that’s wonderful to hear, really,” she smiled, she meant it though the gears in her brain started to turn – the Atlas she knew never struck her as particularly unhappy. Oh no. “We should find some, I’m thirsty and I’m sure water would be good for everyone – plus we should catch up. Have you done anything artistic lately? Any art you can show me? I’ve missed it over the holidays.”

He grinned back, trying to ward off the uneasiness that had settled in his stomach. “Yeah, I mean ever since,” he stops as if remembering that it wasn’t the same - had what he gone through even happened, did that timeline still exist? His face fell at the realization that everything that had happened had apparently been for nothing. “Yeah, water sounds good. Art - why would I? Oh, yeah. I mean I uh, didn’t get into that much in my timeline but I have some really weird paintings of the squid now.”

“Who says it hasn’t already? Haven’t we determined that there are multiple worlds - it seems likely that at least one of them has to have ended.” he muses, wondering how the world could end - and has each possibility already come true? “If you mean this world, isn’t that all based on every choice someone makes? Or everyone, I guess. All of those choices.”

“are you ready to lose the house cup?” he taunted with a grin after flouncing up to emmeline, drink firmly in hand. he had spilled some on his shirt, and he could smell it still as well as feeling the stickiness of his chest - and his hands from trying to wipe it off. “and the quidditch cup too. hufflepuff has this in the bag baby!” cupping his hands around his mouth, as best as he could without spilling his drink, and let out a loud whoop.

“Hi, Atlas! “ Lily giggled, finding it much easier to feel happy with a couple of drinks down. “ I’m fine…” well, she was smiling a bit too much, but at least she was still aware of it. Distantly. But anyway, she wasn’t drunk. It was the goal she had set for herself at the beginning of the party, and she had followed it, but there were some situations that just required alcohol to get through with intact sanity.

 “ What about you? Enjoying the party?” She waved at the people around them, as if he needed any clarifying which party she was talking about. “Back to school extravaganza, all timelines allowed! Honestly, I’m beginning to think that my timeline was a little boring in comparison… None of our parties ever got this wild, and it was not for a lack of effort ”

She looked happy and the feeling was almost infectious in nature; he could feel it bubbling in the pit of his stomach. “Good, that’s good. All happy, we should all just be happy for a bit,” he replied, humming slightly as he nodded to a silent rhythm. He let out a contended sigh as his eyes followed her hands around to glance at all of their classmates, the strangers that some of them were now.

“It’s weird but in a nice way - the war is starting all over, thank god! And we’re having a party to celebrate!” He lets out a loud whoop, throwing his hands up in the air as he does a dramatic little dance. “I don’t remember the last time that I even went to a party, I mean I know they were happening but like I just didn’t go. Regrets are had.”

atlas was enjoying the party, after a few hours - things had simultaneously gone wild and calmed down depending on what light you saw it in. everyone had begun to lose their inhibitions, worries fading away as the drinks were slammed back. so, while atlas wouldn’t necessarily be chatting with someone that he had barely known in his timeline, he had no qualms about doing so now. “lily evans, beautiful as ever. or maybe not, i never saw you in the other timeline. maybe you were radiant, glowing like a goddess.” snapping out of his ramble, he turned back to her a poor attempt at a charming smile. “anyways, how are you holding up?”

kitty cocked her head, her hair falling off her shoulders with the motion, and squinted at atlas.  “ I think. well, I think maybe we have to say its better. like, that way it’s alright that we’re wearing clothes we wouldn’t’ve chosen ourselves. “  she paused; wrinkled her nose and took a hefty sip of her drink.  “ I definitely pity other kitty. this life isn’t perfect  …  I’ve read her diary  …  but it’s also markedly less shitty than wherever she is now. “

“ah so like i’m stuck with weird maroon striped shirts and paintings of the giant squid - so we take the bad with the good, and the good far outweighs the bad so we live with it. or whatever,” he says, the words wrapping around themselves in his mind until they’re a jumbled mess of confusion. “i hope that our other selves don’t come out too messed up, now that we tossed them into different lives. at least in that sense we’re not alone? like we don’t understand their lives but they don’t get ours either.”
