But then he sees this girl’s parting lips, and he’s good      again. The heft of the shovel against his arm and the dirt reaching his legs,       the aching trips up the hill every night, moonlight glaring like an all-seeing       eye, it’s all gone. The summer staining the back of his neck red, the stench      of decay dissipating when he pours a generous and excessive amount of       syrup over his hotcakes.

     “No, no I haven’t. I w-w-was s’posed to meet my buddy there. But, uh, I fucked      up somewhere along the way. Not that I mind,” he forks a mouthful into between      his lips and mumbles, chewing, “You’ll be my new buddy, w-w-won’t you?”

     He stares at her flinching hands and the skirt she keeps messing with, and      jumps again, violently, when Deanne actually does disrupt his thought process      via dishes. He smiles at her again, but it seems futile, and he’s a little nervous      that she’s gonna hawk a loogie into his pancakes. 

     Nineteen, he thinks, and then thinks of that Beach Boys song, Miss America or      what ever. You’re in your teens / you’re in my dreams, somethin’ like that. He      pushes a curl of blonde hair behind her ear, and rests his chin in his hand, elbow      propped on the counter. He likes Texas more than Vegas already, he decides.

     “Nah–I mean, I w-w-was. W-while ago. I got married at sixteen,” he says, and      watches Deanne pour him a glass of ice water. The clatter of ice against glass      makes him viciously nervous all over again and he starts twitching. “She died      around your age. So, I’m a w-w-widow, I guess.”

    He diverts his attention back to the girl, completely facing her, enveloped by     her profile, knees pointed towards her. Deanne is probably prone to hitting     him if this is one of those overly-protective towns, where everyone’s family,     and family don’t get flirted on by strangers. “How old’re you, baby?”

Families are nuisance-guests at the best of times   —   but this one is enough to make James feel murderous individually.
