“Can I stay here tonight? I don’t want to be a bother.” Charles gave her a small smile.” Maybe we can build our pillow and blanket fort… I really need a safe space today I think.”

“Of course! Mom loves having you here. You’re like family now.” Jess beamed. “I can bring in the couch cushions and everything, it’ll be really cozy. Just like when we went camping.” She sat back on the bed and crossed her legs under her. “You know you can stay as long as you want.”

“ Thank you Jess you’re the best. “ Charles smiled.” I need to thank your mom for always letting me stay here. I think I would be a complete mess if it wasn’t for your friendship.”

"Mom likes the company." She shrugged. The more sick her mother became, the more she wanted people around. Jess's mother was constantly asking about Charles and his wellbeing.

“I hope your right Jess. I really do…” Charles cleaned away his tears chuckling.” How embarrassing you’ve seen me cry so many times and I always feel embarrassed no matter what.”

"No need to feel embarrassed, you've seen me cry just as much." Jess wiped his face with her sleeve and kissed his cheek. "It's what we do for each other. We're there when others aren't." She shrugged. "Are you gonna stay here again tonight? Just so mom knows when dinner rolls around."

“Charles, I won’t leave you. That won’t happen.” Jess gathered him into her arms and held him tightly. “It’s you and me against the world, remember? We’ve been together through everything, and we aren’t stopping now.”

Charles held Jess close to him . “ But what if in the future it isn’t like that?… People grow apart and I would never want that to happen to use but  what if we do end up like all the rest.”

"Then we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. It's okay, Charles." Jess rested her head on top of his. It was strange, how attached she had become throughout their teenage years. Rarely did she find a friend who understood her like he did. "Whatever happens, we'll figure it out."

His eyes snap open, and he realizes that sleep had begun to catch him. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?” He struggles to talk, his tongue clumsy from dozing.

"No, no- I just- I don't know."

Jess scrubs a hand down her face and rolls onto her back to look up at the ceiling. Maybe a drink will calm her nerves.

"Sorry. Go back to sleep, I'm gonna get some water."

Tony leans back. Getting comfortable wasn’t high on his itinerary. Her arm is around him, and his other hand runs over the length of her arm slowly. He mumbles, but it comes out as a simple “mm” noise.

Jess leans closer to him and cuddles up to his chest. She'll deny it later on, but for now, she needs to be close to him. To anyone. She squeezes her eyes shut even tighter.

"Tony-"

He rolls his eyes, but lays next to her, sitting upright. “At least I sleep. May just be an hour or so, but its sleep.” There’s an awkward silence between them, and he’s honestly not quite sure what to do to help her. His mind is scrambled, and concentrating on one thing while his mind is murky is an almost impossible task. He lays his hand gently on her head and rubs her forehead with his thumb. “Try to sleep.”

Nearly as soon as she feels the gentle touch, Jess is leaning into his hand and suddenly moving to get closer to him. She abandons her pillow in favour of hesitantly placing an arm across his chest. She's quiet for a few moments, eyes drifting shut as she calms, before speaking.

"Thank you."

Seeing her so worn causes a pull in his chest so tight he feels as though it might snap. “I’m sorry,” He murmurs, leading her to the bedroom. “Its not much, saying that. I know. But baby steps are important. Any step is good. Now, lets just relax. Lay down for a while. If we sleep, we sleep. If we don’t, its alright.”

Despite what she wants, she gives in and follows him anyways. Jess lays back on the bed and clutches a pillow to her chest as she always did. Perhaps his presence would keep insomnia at bay.

"You're one to talk, y'know. I think you get less sleep than I do."

She turns on her side to face him, knees tucked up tightly, head propped up on her arm. She's exhausted, truly, but can't seem to give in to it.

He lifts her chin up, raising his eyebrows. “By what, exactly?” Her eyes look weary and drawn. Even past the usual lack of sleep, she looked strained. “Before we get into that, let’s get you to bed. You’ll relax once we’re just laying down.”

"Same old things as always."

A tired smile pulls at her lips as she looks up at him. He always seems to /know/, even when she tries hiding her exhaustion. To her, it's both a talent and a curse.

She's not used to this, this caring and attention to detail. It causes a brief flutter of anxiety as her hand gently closes around his wrist.

"I'm okay."

“And what thought might that be?”

Her voice was soft and sleepy, so much different from it’s usually gravelly tones. Jess had tried to sleep, truly, but had only managed an hour at most before she was up again in search of better company.

She bridged the small gap between them and wrapped her arms around his torso, head resting just above his heart.

“Not much of anything,” He murmurs, his forehead laying on the top of her hair. “I’ll go to bed now, though. You seem to need sleep more than I do, and knowing you, I have to take you myself.” Tony runs a hand through her hair, rubbing her cheek with his thumb.

"Will you stay in bed?"

The words are muffled by his shirt, and she pauses a moment to allow this comforting feeling to absorb. So rarely now do they seem to have moments like these.

"I /was/ sleeping, but I got distracted."

Distracted was one way of putting it. She was ever the insomniac, and on the rare occasion of sleep, her dreams didn't allow it to go on for very long.

He nods quickly, taking a few steps to the door frame. “I’ve had the dress for a while. It wasn’t originally mine, but…Its been wanting to be worn for a while, and I thought I would let you give it a shot.” The fabric waves in the air away from his fingertips. “I’d forgotten it existed, actually. Just kind of found it.”

Jess paused only for a moment, watching the fabric drift away from his hand. She wanted to ask who's it was, but she knew the answer would be more painful than wondering. "Why didn't you wear it then?"

“Believe me, its not the only language I’ve ever fucked up. Learning Russian was a nightmare. Took me months to just get the alphabet right.” He shakes his head, finishing the last of the juice.

“Deep in the closet? Don’t you want to see it on me? I don’t have many curves, but you don’t really need any to pull off a dress like that.” Tony pouts, reaching forward to feel some of the dress fabric between his fingers.

“Fine, if you like it so much, you keep it. Just don’t expect me to put it back on anytime soon.” Jess shrugged and watched him feel the fabric of the dress. “Something tells me you made this dress more for you to wear once I’m done with it.” She raised an eyebrow at him and smiled playfully.

Tony purses his lips. “Gaelic? I didn’t see you knowing anything other than plain old English, Jess.” He’s hardly affronted; languages had always been priority to his way of life growing up. 

“How about you come with this, amadindandong, and go to the thing we’re late for, and in a few hours you can come back and put away the dress for jeans?”

“My dad was Irish, y’know. He made sure I knew how to speak Gaelic so I could fit in at the family Christmas parties.” She crossed her arms over her chest, an an amused smile crossed her face.

“I am appalled by your butchery of my language.” Jess snorted, but took a step forwards to join him anyways. “Fine, but this dress is going deep into the recesses of my closet and never coming out again.”
