Theo closed his eyes, just taking in this moment with Liam, he felt better now that he was breathing in some fresh air, no longer looking at his best friend’s body. “I love you.” He whispered, turning to press their foreheads together.

No matter how many time he thought it or texted it, the words always got caught in his throat. Love always had these grand connotations for him, no matter how sure he was, there was always this feeling he got that made him hesitate. Still, even if he didn’t say it, he showed it, kissing Theo earnestly. The chimera needed comfort and he’d be damned if he didn’t give it to him. “You too, Theo...I know she was important to you and I’m sorry you lost her. Whatever you need, I’ve got your back. You know that right? Just let me know and I’ll do whatever I can to help you.”

“How precious for him. And with everything going on with him… It’s so good for him having someone he can rely on.” She said, smiling softly. “I know he has his… difficulties. The little devil sitting on his shoulder always winning him over. I just hope you don’t get caught in his crossfire.” She frowned, folding her arms on the table. So they were serious. That meant there was probably love involved as well. How sickening.

Liam’s face steeled at the way she talked about Theo - like he was still the ‘chimera of death’ that they sent to hell and not his boyfriend and his pack. It rubbed him the wrong way just like the rest of her. There was something off about her, he could feel it in his gut, and even if his gut was a bit paranoid lately, he was inclined to follow it - better to be safe than sorry. “We’re fine, he’s fine, but thanks for the concern.”

Nicola’s head snapped up from her gaze on the floor when she realized who had walked through the door.  Liam was among those people who she never wanted to see her like this - Nolan, Lydia, Peyton, there were many. This was her dark side shining through, the side she had tried so hard to hide over the last year. Apparently, grief was the catalyst to her facade breaking down, as it always was.

“You’re going to hurt yourself.” Nicola didn’t mean for her voice to come out so croaky and strained, but an hour of crying would do that she supposed. She pulled herself to her feet but stayed leaning against the counter as her strength escaped her. “You don’t have to do that, kiddo. It’s fine, I’m fine.”

“I’m a werewolf, remember? I can smell your tears. And...I have eyes, this isn’t normal. You’re obviously not fine and that’s cool - I get it - I’m not gonna like bug you about it or anything, but I’m also not gonna leave you alone to clean all this shit up,” Liam replied, moving on to the pottery that was broken beyond repair. He’d have to find a broom or something for the dirt and the flowers, but for the bigger pieces, it was easiest to just pick them up. He knew from experience, unfortunately. This wasn’t the first time he’d cleaned up broken pots. It was just the first time he hadn’t been the one to break them.

Once they were outside Theo walked straight to his truck, he slid down it’s side and sat on the pavement of the parking lot. “It isn’t fair…” He whispered as he stared at the ground. “She didn’t deserve to die..”

“I know.” Liam replied, sitting down beside him, gravel digging into his skin even through the material of his jeans. Wrapping his arm around Theo’s shoulder, he rested his head against the chimera’s, doing his best to comfort physically where he couldn’t articulate the right words.

Perhaps coming into work hadn’t been her best idea? 

Nicola sat among broken shards of plant pots she had thrown and swiped off the nearby tables, soil that had spilled out and bits of flowers she had torn and tossed aside. She had never felt so god damn fucking hopeless, weak, pathetic.Despite her hands having cuts all over them and her hair falling out of her once-neat ponytail, she made no effort to move, choosing to sit in complete silence and waste away with her back against the counter. Her eyes screamed at her to close but she continued to stare blankly at the floor despite her lack of sleep. Her stomach groaned at her in pain but she ignored it. When the bell above the door chimed, she ignored that too, not bothering to look. 

“Fuck off. We’re closed.” Even her voice sounded fed up, like it too had gotten sick of her.

Liam paused in the doorway, taking in the sight of Nicola sitting in the midst of at least a dozen broken pots, the floor littered with flowers and dirt. Most alarming of all was not the state of her shop, but the state of the woman herself. She looked like shit, for lack of a better word. He couldn’t remember a time before when he’d seen her like this, but it was enough to render him momentarily speechless - which was saying something. 

“I’m not gonna to do that, especially with all this -” he gestured to the chaos before him. “I’ll help you clean up.” Finally stepping into the shop, he began to gather broken shards of pottery, not bothered by the sharp edges. If he was cut, he’d heal in seconds. She would probably mourn their loss later so he saved whatever he could of the ones that looked vaguely salvageable. Maybe she’d be able to piece them back together again and sell them for half price?

Theo nodded, sparing one last look at Penny, it was haunting how people looked once they were dead. It had never failed to scare him. “Let’s go.” He whispered, turning away quickly.

Liam kept his arm around Theo as they left, guiding the chimera out of the building and into the parking lot. The sun was setting and the dimming light made the chimera look haunted, it was fitting considering the circumstances and it made him want to drag Theo home and keep him away from the world - from the pain and the death that seemed to follow him.

Theo felt the tears welling up hard and fast, squeezing his eyes shut he buried his face in Liam’s neck. “I can’t do this, I can’t, Liam.” He hiccuped a sob, clinging to his boyfriends hand. He had to leave, no matter how much he wanted to say goodbye he couldn’t be here right now.

“...then we don’t have to. We can leave whenever you want, remember?” he replied softly, wrapping his arms around Theo’s waist and holding him close. “Let’s...let’s go home, okay? We can try again later...or not, it’s up to you.”

“They are.” Kira said taking one as well. Kira had a concerned look. “Is there any ay you could call him?” Kira asked, she couldn’t imagine being far from her familiy for long. The kitsune still tried to nod in understanding, in a I’m here for you kinda way. 

“That’s good advice.” Kira said . “You are smarter than you think Liam.” There was a smile there. Kira perked up at the question. “It’s actually very easy and very cool.” Kira said. “I can show you if you want?” The kitsune offered.

“I mean, probably? But I haven’t spoken to either of them since I was like real little so it’d be weird.” He replied, unbothered by the whole thing. He didn’t think about them much, nor did he think about his biological father unless his mom started looking at him the way she had freshman year - like he was a monster, like she was scared of him. 

“Oh...well, thanks, I’m glad you think so.” Liam smiled, leaning forward. “And that sounds cool, I’d like that. I could use a break from all the angels and demons and stuff. Who knows? Maybe my true calling is as a candle maker and we can become business partners.”

“Okay..” He whispered, squeezing Liam’s hand as they walked in, he walked straight up and stopped when he got closer to the casket. He swallowed hard and slid closer to Liam until he was pressed up against his boyfriends side.

Liam’s eyes flicked between Penny and Theo, at a loss. Confronting death head on was a daunting task, especially when the dead person was someone he’d talked to just days before. It was weird, he felt like he should be sadder, but there was some...disconnect and instead of too much he felt not enough. 

Nevertheless, Liam stayed where Theo seemed to want him and fought the urge to break the silence, squeezing his boyfriend’s hand and letting his gaze settle somewhere between the edge of the coffin and his scuffed sneakers.

Mara relaxed back in her chair once she’d gotten Liam to relax. Clearly the charm offensive wasn’t one that was going to work with him - either he was too smitten with the wannabe demon to notice her advances, or too awkward to accept them.

“Oh, we go way back. I used to help him out with his homework when he was a kid, before he moved away.” She explained. It wasn’t true, but Mara knew Destiny had done some tutoring in the past - so it was plausible. “We lost touch for a little while, so it’s so great to see him again, and in a good place.” She smiled. “So, how long have you two been a thing? Is it serious?”

“Huh, he’s never mentioned you.” Liam shrugged, leaning back in his chair, trying to decide whether the strange gut feeling she gave him was just him being paranoid or if she was actually a threat. Maybe it was the random ass conversation about Theo? He wasn’t used to people taking interest in him out of the blue in the first place, let alone people eager to talk about the chimera like he was an old friend. 

“I dunno, a few months? I think we’re pretty serious,” he left it at that. Liam and Theo’s discussion of their relationship had never really gotten too deep, but he was hoping to change that sooner rather than later no matter how much the thought made him uncomfortable. They’d never been good at the whole communication thing.

She was tempted to reassure him, to tell him that everything was alright and change the subject, but that wouldn’t do either of them any good. She owed so much to Liam after coming back - he accepted her into his home, his life, without question.

“When I went looking for Mason… I found Henrik Mikaelson at the cemetery. I tried threatening him to tell me where Erika was, to find out if she was the one that turned Mason. That’s… when he told me I wasn’t a werewolf. That he could… He could only smell human on me.” She looked down, the words still painful for the born-werewolf to explain. “… I never healed from ritual, Li. The energy it took from me to open the rift… It drained me of my powers.”

Liam was speechless, unsure where to even begin responding to something like that. He wished he was more like Scott, his Alpha would know what to do. Somehow he always did, even if he wasn’t convinced of it himself. The fucking ritual had stolen a piece of Lori’s identity, it wasn’t something he could get back for her - not really. He could fight as many demons as he wanted, he could fix whatever the hell was going on with Beacon Hills, and nothing would change. 

“Fuck, Lori...” he finally started, breaking the silence. “I’m so sorry.” 

Taking a step closer, he pulled her in for a hug, trying desperately to express what he couldn’t put into words. He felt like he’d failed again, he’d let her get hurt, he’d done too little too late and now she was once again paying the price. “What about Scott? Have you talked to him? Maybe he can, y’know, give you the bite?”

Closed Starter for Liam

Theo clung to Liam’s hand, their fingers laced together as he stared at the doors. They were inside but hadn’t entered the viewing room yet. “I don’t know if I can do this..” He said as his voice broke, “Liam I…I’ve never…” He’d never had to deal with death before, his sister had died but there had been no time to grieve, same for his parents. He didn’t have the ability to process it then, he still hadn’t processed it now.

“Let’s just...go in and if you can’t do it we’ll leave, okay?” Liam suggested, squeezing Theo’s hand. He hadn’t really known her, not like Theo, but he did know she meant a lot to him and losing her wasn’t going to be easy. Her loss at heavily in his gut, even if she was - at most - a friendly acquaintance. The chimera’s hurt was contagious, it buried itself deep in his chest, and maybe it was bad that the churning storm of emotion clouding his head mostly revolved around Theo, but he couldn’t bring himself to care. Penny was important to Theo and Theo was important to him. 

“I’ve got you, I promise.”

Leaving Tierney with Scott, just for a little while, Lori headed back to Liam’s place. She’d been putting it off, and generally avoiding seeing Liam for the last few days, other than texting him to reassure him she was okay. But with the loss of her abilities, and now Tierney coming home, as much as she loved being at Liam’s, she had to go home to Satomi’s. It just felt right to be there, to be in her old room, to give her the space to process everything.

It didn’t stop her feeling like the worst friend in the world though. Especially when she’d kept from him her problem.

“Hey… It’s your day off, right?” She said, wrinkling her nose as he saw Liam sitting at the table. “Do you have some time to talk?”

“Yeah, of course. I’ve always got time. What’s up? Is everything alright?” Liam asked, a crease appearing between his brows. “Are you in trouble?” 

Lori was like the little sister he never had, she was family as far as he was concerned any problem of her’s was a problem of his. It wasn’t often she came in and asked him outright to talk, from experience that usually meant something big, and he immediately found himself no longer interested in his textbook.

“You’re Liam, right?” Mara said, ignoring his hesitation at her friendliness, and carrying on. “My name’s Destiny, I’m a friend of Theo’s? He mentioned you and him were kinda a thing, so I thought I’d just come by, say hi. Give you the third degree.” She chuckled. “Still, looking at you, as much as I love Theo he’s definitely punching above his weight. You’re adorable.”

“Oh, uh, yeah. That’s me,” he smiled, perking up at the mention of the chimera. Theo didn’t have a whole lot of friends so it was nice to meet the ones he did, even if they were there to judge his every move. Deciding to change course and sit down across from Destiny, he leaned back in his chair, giving her a once-over. She was pretty, but there was something underneath the surface that put him on edge. It kinda reminded him of Theo, or pre-hell Theo at least. 

“Thanks, I guess?” Adorable was not the word he’d use to describe himself, but it was better than it could be. “So, how do you two know each other?”

“Oh.” Kira replied. “How’s your granpa doing now? I mean how are the fries doing ” Kira asked. She shouldn’t ask about other peoples grandpas. What if Liam’s grandpa was in fact not okay? What if he had to wrestle an alligator or something and lost his hand later on? This questions and more swirled her head and opted to answer Liam’s question instead. 

“. Nothing much I just enrolled to the university for teacher education.” Kira nodded. “ Not sure if I want to the histroy route or ESL route-what do you think Liam?” Kira asked asking for his opinion. “Or maybe I should just switch to translating until I can open up a candle shop?” Kira looked at Liam. “So many possibilities you know?”

“The fries are pretty good and I haven’t seen my grandpa in...forever, so I wouldn’t know. He’s on my dad’s side of the family so we stopped seeing him after my parents got a divorce,” Liam explained, nonchalantly, shoving another fry into his mouth. The divorce was an old wound, it’d scarred over years ago and both he and his mom were better off for it. Plus, his step-dad was basically the coolest person he knew, that’d helped smooth things over in the short term. 

“Oh, cool! I’m probably not the guy you wanna ask for career advice, I don’t even know what I want to do - hell, I don’t even know where to start. Just...do what makes you happy until it stops making you happy?” He shrugged, advice wasn’t really his forte - Scott was way better at the motivational speeches and all that sincere sentimental stuff, but he tried. People didn’t normally take it anyway. “How do you even make candles, anyway?”

elena  decided  to  let  it  go.  BEST  CHOICE?  maybe  not  but  hey,  give  a  little  faith  and  get  a  little  right?  the  truth  is,  she  was  following  him.  she  had  noticed  something  about  him  but  now  that  she  knows,  perhaps,  it  seems  like  she  had  just  been  lacking  sleep.  “it’s  okay.  i’m  pretty  much  the  queen  of  bad  first  impressions.”  she  joked  with  a  little  laugh.  “i  think  we’re  all  a  little  on  edge  so  i  can’t  blame  you.  if  it  helps,  it’s  like  i  never  left  mystic  falls.”  as  much  as  she  missed  it  of  course  and  leaving  wasn’t  exactly  her  choice,  “so  thanks  for  making  it  more  homey  for  me.”

“You’re welcome?” He laughed awkwardly, wracking his brain for an answer as to why Mystic Falls sounded so familiar. Maybe Deaton had mentioned it before and he just hadn’t been paying attention? That happened on occasion, especially once his ramblings past the ten minute mark and his mild phone addiction took hold. “It’s weird to think there’s somewhere else as...insane as Beacon Hills.” 

 He wondered if there was another Neme-whatever there, too. Apparently, those attracted the supernatural like crazy. “Where is Mystic Falls, anyway? I feel like I keep hearing about it.”

Adriel gave him a cordial nod of her head, speaking reassurance of safety, though, in the back of her mind, she kept the possibility of a threat in the back of her mind. There was no telling how talented these creatures could be in the art of deception. Her gaze fixated on any kind of pain, any wince, any tingle or burn. He seemed uneasy, but not in pain. “If you’re a demon, or have one inside of you, you’ll burn,” she stated before she removed her hand from his face, “The taste of it may even kill you.”

“Oh, huh.” Liam replied, pulling up his shirt to wipe the blood off his face before the stickiness dried completely. “Well, I guess it’s a good thing I’m not a demon then, ‘cause dying would really suck. Can I go now or are you going to smite me if I leave?” He asked, sincerely, frowning as he looked down at his shirt. Blood was a bitch to get out. He’d know, he’d gotten used to treating the stains years ago.
