โ holy shit. thatโs the dumbest thing iโve ever heard anyone say in my entire lifetime. โ riley glanced at the other, pretty annoyed by the fact that she had to spend her day off surrounded by idiots as well. the girl straightened her jacked as she watched the other with a subtle eye roll.ย โ and trust me, iโve heard a LOT of dumb shit. โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โ ย ย what a dumb ass, am i right ? trust me, i K N O W ! imagine having to be there while they tried explaining it. like, how does the CHICKEN come before the egg ? i really want to know who told them this information so i can go throat punch them for false advertising and informing. ย โ emily shook her head in disapproval, scoffing as she did so.

ย ย ย he remembered the first time he ever laid eyes on emily, it was the summer of the year two-thousandย & the rutherford family had just moved into the house across from the donovan family - and there she was, two ginger pigtails &ย the most hideous dress he had ever seen in the short existenceย of alistair rutherford on this earth, but from that day on, the two were glued to the hip, spending several play dates at each otherโs houses, endless summers at his familyโs lake house. even that one innocent kiss at new yearโs eve of two thousand-eleven ( that only seemed innocent back than ) & and many more memorable memories.ย there had been several times where he wanted to confront emily about his harboured childhood crush he captured for her, but every time he was about to do, something happened & the right moment faded away. he sees it as god his way of preventing it; preventing the break of their friendship, maybe ?? it was never his intention to catch FEELINGSย for his childhood best friend, guess boys & girls canโt be just friendss without either one of them having feelings for the other one. ย when he suddenly felt emilyโs hand grabbing his, soothingly rubbing his hand with her thumb, he gazed up from his thoughts ย ย ย ย peeping in a small, tightย smile on his lips, looking down at their hands, touching. he hadnโt know how much he needed to feel her touch meltingย with his until now. โ ย ย ย ย ย but i do , emily. i fucking do.ย โ a sigh escaped from his lips. his body tingled when she removed strays of hair out his face, for a split second he gazed over her lips, before looking her straught in the eyes when she spoke again.ย โ either way, weโre a match made to be doomed. โ a loud groan came from his lips, hands rubbing in his face.ย โ i miss home. i miss how easy things were back home. no drama. just the TWO OF US and our weekly diner dates, โ he gazed at the fellow redhead,ย โ thank you for letting me stay here. ย yeah ย ย ย ย ย friends. โ a long pause was ย before he said the word friends.ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย friendships differ based on a VARIETYย of factors. whether it be the clash of personalities between the ones involved, the time period in which they have known each other, or just the complexity of the relationship. the one that alistair rutherford and emily donovan had formed seemed to a complex yet unbreakable sort of friendship that emily believed people would make movies about. endless times she could recall her laying on the floor of her sisterโs room while she gushed on and on about her feelings for the boy. her sister would simply laugh and tell her she should just act on her emotions and see how things went, but young emily shook her head to shake off the ridiculous idea. the selflessness in emily forbidย her to do soโโโโthough often she would wish she listened. she remembered old days of when they were in school, how they always tried to get partnered up together for every and any class assignment, how they would continuously get in trouble for talking or throwing things at one another, and how the two always accompanied each other on their after schoolย adventures home. real feelings didnโt come into play until much later, though once they were introduced, it seemed to be that emily could never shrug them away.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย a grin danced along crimson tinted lips as the other showed a small glimmer of a gleam. seeing the other smile sent her heart into a F R E N Z Y. it was only for a moment โ โ โ but the butterflies in her stomach stayed even after the two-second smile was gone. ย โ ย ย you guys are going to be just FINE, i promise. ย ย โ ย she hopedย they would, though a small part of her shamefully wished and pleaded that they wouldnโt. and emily quickly shoved that minusculeย part of her in a box and shoved it deep, deep down inside of her to keep it from ever surfacing. eyes focused mainly on his, though occasionally continuouslyย lingered along his features ( secretly admiring as she did so, though she wouldnโt dare to show it ). ย ย โ ย ย ohโโโโcome on ! youโre being DRAMATIC.ย you guys are practically m a d e for each other. and you know it. ย ย โ ย was that more reassuring than the words she spoke before ? all she wanted, in that moment, was to try and make her BEST-FRIENDย feel somewhat better than when he first approached her doorstep. ย โ ย ย i miss it too sometimes, but, thatโs in the past. weโre here, alistair, in amsterdam ! we should be making more memories โ โ โ not dwelling on o l dย ones. ย ย โ ย emily couldnโt help but let a light smile appear at the thought of the recollections, though. ย โ ย ย itโs no problem, al. and, weโre not JUST friendsโโโweโreย bestย friends. letโs not forget that. ย ย โ ย it was true, they were best friends, but she spoke using the word loosely.
ย ย ย โ ย ย ย donโt look weird at me, โ she said, standing up from the table she was sitting on to get a better angle for her food picture.ย โ itโs what i do for a living, โ she shrugged her shoulders, before sitting her petite frame back in her seat.ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โ ย ย iโm not JUDGING youโโโtrust me. i envyย you.ย ย โ ย emily responded with a small grin, eyes watching the other before her in awe. โ ย ย i surely doย w i s h i could take a picture, but i canโt. not even if my life dependedย on it โ โ โ but, so youโre a photographer, huh ? how long you โbeen doing that ? ย โ ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โ ย my ย moms ย are ย visiting ย !ย ย i ย need ย everything ย to ย be ย PERFECT ย for ย when ย they ย arrive, ย so ย youโre ย going ย to ย h e l p ย me. ย โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โ ย ย oh my G O D ! of course iโm gonna lend you a handย !ย when are they coming ? and, thatโs FANTASTIC newsโโโโwhat do you need help with ? ย โ
alistairย .
โ but you love me, donโt deny it. โ he said, chuckling with a smirk upon the features of his face. he knew his way to persuade emily in doing things, and he wasnโt ashamed of doing it either. over the years, it grew to be a hobby of him; teasing emily. for a brief moment, it felt as if they were back in high school & spent one of many nights at her place, & he was trying to convince her into doing mischievousย things with him.ย โ i know, thatโs why i suggested it. โ ย he spoke again,โ yes, it does come first, but so does having fun & eating food. โ he propped himself on his feet, reaching for his keys & jacket,ย โ i knewย i could convince you. i always do. sure. check is on me. โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย โ ย ย my LOVE for you goes only so f a r โ โ โ ย and you are starting to push my limits. ย โ ย it was a JOKE, yes, but played it off with a serious tone. she had to admit, what alistair spoke of didย soundย tempting, so she obviously ended up agreeing with him in the end. emily knew that she was knees-deep in desperation when it came to her worksheets, and her overall schoolwork, but she tried her best to not s t r e s s about it for at LEAST a little while. the redhead wasnโt too fond of sweetsโโโspicy and salty foods have been her favorite things since she could remember. and the thought of them going out to eat together brought up fond memories of their many memories in boston โ โ โ her heart began to cry out to home. ย โ ย ย listen, if i fail ? itโs going to be s e m i on you, a majority of the blame will be on me, but a LITTLE bit will definitely be on you. iโm just saying, though. just saying. ย โย
juliaย .
โ oh, you should DEFINITELY treat it like a true gift. honestly, i would do anything for a knee-slappinโ joke right now. โ julia chuckled. the blonde got up, pressed her lips together and nodded.ย โ what are you in the mood for? โ she could cook quite some things. of course, she had quite a lot of practice. when she was stressed โ like stressed stressed โ youโd most likely find julia in the kitchen. usually either baking or cooking โ mostly baking though โ or both at the same time. in those few years where the stress baking/cooking became a thing for julia, she went through several recipe books, pinterest boards of recipes and ended up making some things by combining recipes.ย โ oh, google will most likely have the answers. my professors are too lazy to come up with their own assignments, so usually the answers and solutions are all online. and please, youโre allowed to be DRAMATICย about classmates, theyโre often the worst thing of college. for some reason theyโre all lazy entitled asshats who think youโre the only one who has to work on the group assignment. โ
ย ย ย ย โ ย you need a knee-slapper ? i got you on that, but i warn you โ โ โ ย they are seriously lame as hell. anyways, why donโt lobsters share ? because they are shellfish !ย ย โ ย ย emily couldnโt help but laugh at her own joke, which really wasnโt SURPRISING considering the redhead laughs at a lotย of stuff.ย โ ย ba-dum-tsk ! that was good, right ? ย โ ย the blondeโs inquiry caused her to think for a moment. she was hungry, but what was she hungry forย ? her finger then tapped her chin as she pondered for about a minute, before her shoulders finally shrugged in defeat. ย โ ย honestly i reallyย donโt knowโโโbut i doย know my stomach is GRUMBLINGย and i kind of find it g ย r o s s. ย โ ย emily wasnโt much of a cooker, though she could throw down every now and then. her mother taught her a few recipes, but sometimes the redhead would struggle with certain meals. ย โ ย i know, right ? whatโs up with the teachers now ? are they thatย deep in self hatred to result in poor teaching habits ? itโs truly depressing and all around tragic โ โ โ ifย you ask me. and, i totally agree with you on the whole entitled asshat thing. a lot of them are childish and canโt express their views in anย EDUCATINGย way. which, again, is t r a g i c.ย ย โ ย
alistairย .
alistair found him on the doorstep of the one person he knew that he could confide in, the one person who had seen him going through all stages of life, the bad ones & the good ones, and never judge him for it either. he had found himself at emilyโs place, a place that was further away than he was used to, but he was glad she travelledย with him to amsterdam. imagine the distance if she had stayed back in boston instead. it was late at night, probably after midnight, as he knocked on her door. patiently waiting for her to open up, and she did, he propped himself up &ย waited for the door to fully swing open. a wave of relief rushed through his body when he saw the face he grew up with; a safe haven, she was.ย โ ย ย ย ย ems, โ he said, his voice almost making no sound.ย
he stepped inside her house, without making any eye contact with the redhead, he walked into her living room & seated himself on her sofa. he knew that he didnโt have to say much for emily to notice something was wrong with him, & this time she didnโt disappoint him either; she knew something was up. she was right. there was a certain sadness clouding his expression, one he hadnโt shown to her since senior year, โ i screwed up, em. i really did. โ his voice was hoarse, as if he hadnโt talk for a while. breath stocking in the back of his throat only making it harder for him to talk.ย โ itโs julia ย ย ย ย i kissed her & she, well, she pushed me off, โ still, he hadnโt make any eye contact with her, โ and i sort of lost it, i guess. yelled at her & all that kind of stuff. โ this was the first time he looked up at her, gazing his eyes over her features,ย โ i made her cry. โ thinking back about it, he could feel himself getting angry again, but this time he was angry with himself for the way he had treated her. โ can i stay here โtill i find something else? โ
ย ย ย ย despite emily being only the mere age of twenty-one, she had achieved quite a bit. though her achievements were in the academic category for the most part, she found herself sitting next to the one thing that kept her going all those years. the one person that continuouslyย INSPIRED her to achieve greatness. alistair. they had been friends for so long that she literally could not imagine her life without him. and, despite her carrying a bundle of romantic feelings for him that have been growing since the seventh grade, emily always kept her role as the CHILDHOOD BEST FRIEND. it was a title that was a bitter-sweet one, though if anyone asks, she would say that she canโt see herself being anything else to him ( a lie nonetheless ). she tried to be s e l f i s hย all the time โ โ โ but, metaphorically,ย constantly fell flat on her face. the redhead tried to put her feelings before others and tried to not care at all, but always failed in the end. seeing another hurt would cause her to hurt as well, and vise-versa with all the other moods and emotions one can feel. she wasnโt as HARDHEARTEDย as she tried to present herself to strangers and acquaintances, and that was the one major thing she disliked about herself.ย
ย ย ย ย heart grew heavy at the sight of the other before her. seeing her BESTFRIEND ( long time crush ) go through this only made her mind linger as to how she could help. she wasnโt that good with words, and tried her best to comfort, but emily found herself growing insecure at the thought of her might not being able to provide the strong shoulder for him to cry on like she usually did. her hand grabbed his, thumb soothingly rubbing the top of his hand. ย โ ย ย everyone makes mistake, al. donโt beat yourself over it.ย ย โ emily tried to give him a small smile, free hand moving a few pieces of stray hairs that had managed to get in the otherโs face. to listen to the other talk about K I S S I N G another left a sour taste in her mouth, which caused her to feel immediately ashamed for her reaction to hearing those words. โ ย ย julia is veryย understanding, al. you probably just caught her at the wrong time. maybe she was having a bad day ? anyone can ย simply look and see how much she CARES about you, and how much you care about her. ย ย โ ย was that good enough, were her words providing the comfort the other needed ? she didnโt know. only hoped.ย โ ย ย of COURSEย you can stay hereโโโyou shouldnโt even have to a s k. ย iโll try to help you out any way i can.ย โcause, i mean, what are FRIENDS for ? ย ย โ

ย ย ย ย late night television s p l u r g e s had become a normal thing for emilyโโโeven though she knew she probably had forgotten school work to do. she laid sprawled out on the couch with a blanket pilled on topย of her and a pillow behind her head, focus too into the current program on to fix the cover so it was over her feet. all the lights in the room were off, only the BLARINGย television provided a light source. it seemed that this was how every night ended for her, though she wouldnโt deny it nor want it to change. with school seeming to be literally suffocating her, it was only fit that she evened it out with long nights of television marathons. a knock on the door, though, had priedย her from her cocoonย of safety and happiness so she could answer it. hands flicked the light on before fingers latched on the brass doorknob to turn it, revealing in a few moments whom the door-knocker was.ย
ย ย ย ย the knocker had proved to be the one and only alistair. but why, at such a late hour ? and so unexpectedlyย ? she knew something was wrong. his demeanor upon the opening of the door had answered her question right before she was about to ask itโโโโsomething wasย wrong. she simply stepped aside to let him in, then closed the door behind him.ย ย โ ย ย is something up ย ? ย โ emily questioned, after the two had sat down on her sofa. it was the first thing to be spoken since she opened the door and let him in without hesitation. the EXPRESSION on his face when the door swung open had filled in the empty atmosphere instead of them having to using words. but emilyโs curiosityย got to the best of her, and she broke the silence rather quickly upon sitting down. something had to of happenedโโโbut what was it ? he had his hings with him, which indicated to her that he was no longer living with julia. what had changed ? the redhead was interested as to what was going on with the other, an eager yet anxious feeling overwhelmed her as eyes studied the facial features of alistair โ โ โ trying to get any type of body language or movement to help her piece the situation together.ย โ ย ย you know you can ALWAYS tell me a n y t h i n g. iโm here for you. always. ย โ

โ you know, iโve lived here almost a year and iโve never even seen half of what this place has to offer. iโve got two weeks off work coming up and iโve decided to go full on tourist, i want to see everything. any recommendations ? ย better yet ! ย you should come with me. โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย โ ย ย iโve been here about a MONTH, and i donโt think iโve seen even an eighth of this place. itโs tragic, truly, especially because itโs just s o pretty here ! i would love to tag along โ โ โ we could have matching totally tourist outfits and everything. weโll be EXTREMELY tacky. ย โ
judeย .
jude listened to the girlโs story, amused. sheโd never been the confrontational sort โ it took quite a bit for her to be riled up enough to get into any sort of argument โ but that didnโt mean sheโd never had run-ins with people like the girl the redhead was describing, and she could definitely relate. โ a quick google search would have proven that she was completely misinformed, but eh, iโve met people who knowย that theyโre wrong but still continue to parrot their wrong opinions because theyโre too stubborn to admit that they were wrong in the first place. โ jude had met more people like that than she wanted to, and just the thought of them was enough to cause just the slightest bit of irritation to creep up on her, but that all vanished at the sound of the familiar name. โ wait, alistair as in alistair rutherford? i know him, actually! what a small world. weโre not best buds or anything, but sometimes we help each other out, yโknow? โ her attention drifted back to the girl she sat with, and suddenly it clickedโโ โ you wouldnโt happen to be emily, would you? โ
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย she nodded in agreement with jude, a small smile forming at the fact that the other was on her side with the whole dispute ( even though it had been over with for a month and she hadnโt had a conversation with the random female since ). ย โ ย exactly my point ! ย people donโt check to make sure what they t h i n k is right is indeed correct, and mostly just gather and sort their standings out based on pieces they have gathered from incorrect social media sources and other individuals. i mean, iโm not saying that allย social media information is incorrect nor am i saying that allย other individuals are wrong, but they just are a GOOD bit of the timeโโโwhich means both arenโt particularly reliable fact-holders. ย โ a small laugh had escaped her lips when jude asked if she was emily, which was followed by another simple nod.ย โ ย apparently a few people know him, or know of him, so iโm assuming this place is a lot smaller than i thought it was. but, yes, i am INDEED emily โ โ โ emily donovan. care to tell me what your name is ? or not, thatโs fine, i can just call youย โthat cool chickโ and we can roll with that. ย โ
alistairย .
ย โ if you ever do end up losing your mind, iโll make sure to take the needed advantage of it. might even record it, you saying that iโm RIGHT. itโs going to be my greatest memory, โ he chuckled, eyeing his fellow redhead.ย โ oh donโt give me disapproval, ems. youโre going to do just fine with the worksheets. you have eighty four hours, iโm sure you can spare two hours of relieving stress & eating your way through the menu at this little mexican restaurant down town. โ he got up from his seat, approaching his friend & pulling her up from her place, โ come with me, โ his voice was almost like he demanded her to come with him.ย โ you see youโll do better once you went out & came back with a clear head ย ย ย ย i PROMISE.โย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โ ย ย youโre LITERALLYย so annoying sometimesโโโโโi swear ! ย โ ย emily couldnโt help but let out a small laugh at the boy in front of her. it amazed her how much the both of them had changed since when they first met as kids. her mind went to the endless nights they spent at each otherโs houses, either just staying up all night talking, or getting into trouble, or both. friendship, like the one the two redheads had acquired since they were children, seemed to be r a r eย these days. โ ย ย ugh โ โ โ you knowย how spicy food is my weakness. but, i know diddly-squat regarding both ofย those worksheets, alistair rutherford, and doesnโt education ALWAYS come first ? ย โ ย another huff followed as she was yanked from her seat, eyes rolling yet again. ย โ ย ย FINE. iโll goโโโโโbutย you have to pay. ย โ
