jess knew she deserved a drink after everything she went through. she was holding off at first because the last time she drank, it didn’t end too well, but tonight seemed like a good night to. “ cheers. ” she turned to the person next to her at the bar, raising her glass.

“Yeah-uh cheers?” He spoke more as a question than anything but left actually questioning her at that, he could sense it was something she didn’t need right now and Cas surprisingly wasn’t in the mood to be an ass.

In two ways Cas was relieved to be back in NOLA, even if that meant he was back to being a Seraph and Mayor. Some abilities felt good to get back to and the rest just made his head hurt, “I guess that means everything is back to normal then then huh?”

“Well, yeah. We’re all human here. It’s kind of nice if you ask me.” she paused for a moment. “I used to be able to read minds. I think I heard someone say something about a Special Child. I don’t know. My first foster mom just thought I was crazy.” she said, feeling the need to clarify.

“Nice but for me it makes me worry about the people I care for and that if something happens I wont be able to help or protect them.” That was his only worry, the rest he was fine with. “Ah a special child.” Cas nodded at the mention, “Some humans don’t like to except indifference, so I am sorry to hear that. Do you have a better home now?”

“In our own ways huh?” He raised an eyebrow. “I’ll leave that one up to interpretation.” He added with a laugh. “There’s a good kind?” He grinned. “Good to know.”

“That’s right, as I have said before Dean we do share a stronger bond. I am always going to think of you different from Sam.” Looking away for a moment he sighed. “I would say there is-yes.” He smiled slightly.

“Yeah - we are pretty great.” He said with a grin. “And I know I speak for myself and Sammy when I say that we would both very much like that too.” He nodded. “That’s true.” He agreed. “Though I’m still sort of an ass now.” He shrugged. “Well I’m glad I could do that for you.”

“In your own ways-yes.” Cas couldn’t help but smile a little as Dean grinned, running his eyes from his lips to his general face. “The good kind of ass though.” He insisted. “Me too Dean...me too.”

Cas found it weird but she was actually right, adults did tend to do that even if the whole thing could be done simply. “Yeah-You have a point, we always do.” He nodded and chuckled a little, although he wasn’t sure how to get out of that habit; worrying and coming up with complicated reasons for things...then again Cas technically was really old. “Fantastic, i’m guessing this will be persistent too.”

“I sure hope so.” Dean agreed. “It looks like it.” He nodded. “Is that a good thing? That you get to grow old with us?” He asked. “Probably still in heaven somewhere, still an angel.” He shrugged. “But then you’d be a total ass with no human emotions and we would never have met you.”

“Yeah, you...and Sam helped change me for the better. It would be an honor to grow old and die with you Dean.” Speaking right from the heart, even if Dean wouldn’t read into that straight away Cas needed him to know that he didn’t mind being human especially when he had him around. “That could speak for both of us, although I mean while we may have been asses the good people we are were always under there-you just happened to bring that person out of me.”

“then make them simpler,” she said with a shrug. she didn’t quite understand the complexities yet. all she saw was a chance for both of them to be happy. she refused to allow them to do nothing and not be as happy as they could be together. she smiled back up at him and she could see that castiel cared for her father just by the way he looked at her. “i’m my dad’s daughter. what do you think?” she asked with a certain sparkle in her green eyes. in dean’s green eyes.

“It’s not that easy kid, trust me. If I could I would.” That was more than the truth, he’d do everything in his power if he could but that meant changing who they were and if he did that Dean wouldn’t be the person Castiel loved. “If you’re as stubborn as he is-i’m sure you’re not gonna let this go.” He shook his head for a moment and smiled widely, she really knew how to get to him just like Dean did.

“i don’t think you will, cas,” she assured him, meeting his eyes. she tilted her head listening to him. she wondered if she would ever find love. she knew she loved her family and she would die for them. and she smiled softly when she saw christian smiling at her in her mind, blushing softly. “i think it sounds nice,” she replied, tucking a strand behind her ear. “you’re welcome. but i still think you should tell him,” she added.

“I guess it can be if things are more simple.” Cas nodded, he could see the smile and it made him do the same, he saw a lot of Dean in Emma and while that was not his reason for finding it so easy to talk to her it was definitely a reason he cared so much more for the child; she was Dean’s and that meant he needed to protect her just like he did Dean. “You’re not gonna give up on this are you?” He questioned with a small chuckle.

“You’re always going to be our family Cas, and Sammy and I will always be there to make sure you’re safe, the same way you always have been when it came to us; we’ll protect each other, all of us.” He smiled. “Yeah, I’m glad we’ve survived this long too, and we’ll survive a longer.” He nodded. “You did have to literally drag me out of hell to get me to this point, but I’m glad you did.”

“We will.” Cas nodded, this wasn’t only a promise it was inevitability and he knew at least on his side keeping the Winchester’s and now their kids safe was something he would always do. “Strange now though-I always thought I was going to have to watch you and Sam grow old, it looks like i’ll be growing old too.” That was weird to him but he didn’t mind it as long as he had Dean and the people he would consider family. “Me too Dean-who knows where I would have been now if I hadn’t.”

“it’s weird, being normal. i’m not sure if i like it or not. how are you taking being human? it’s gotta be a big change for you.”

“I feel powerless but in the same instant I don’t hate it. I find it calming...i’d run back to being an Angel if it was offered to me but I don’t dislike the change.”

“I know. You’ve proven that, Cas - every chance you’ve gotten. You’ll always be family for me and Sam. We love you.” I love you. “You already have done a couple of times. And so have I for you, for Sam. I’d do the same for Emma or Natasha now too.” He nodded. “I understand why, it’s what you do for family, for the people you couldn’t live without.”

“And I love you..both too.” It wasn’t the same love when it came to Sam but he did care for him and even more so because he loved Dean enough to allow his concerns become his own.”And we always keep coming back, we survive-i’m glad we’ve survived this long.” Cas meant to say he was happy that they were alive and together but of course he went around the point. “That’s right, it’s what you do for the people you love, sacrificing your life is easy when you know they get to live theirs.”

“Yeah, I guess we are. Sam keeps an eye out for me, but it’s not his job to protect me, I look after him because I’m the big brother. Emma’s my daughter so she’s my responsibility, and you’re my friend - and I owe you after all the times you’ve saved my life.” He nodded. “And it falls on you to protect me, so good luck with that one.” He laughed.

“I’d do it all again Dean, you don’t owe me anything.” Cas put simply, he’d always be there to protect Dean if it was up to him or simply to save him from whatever crap came their way because that’s what he felt you’d do for the people you love. “As hard as the job may be, i’ll always be here to do that. You already know i’d give up my life for you.” The seriousness in his voice was crazy but in the same instant the love and care he had for Dean never left his eyes, it was in that moment that he truly understood what love was.

“I’m not even going to ask.” Dean said with a laugh, deciding that it was better to leave it at that and not push Cas to say anything else. If he was worried he would always ask Emma. “Well lucky for you you’re not gonna lose us anytime soon. Sam and Emma are my responsibility, Natasha is Sam’s and I guess we’re each others.”

Cas was happy with that, at least in that way he didn’t need to force himself to come out with how he felt and he could simply would remain his concerned self. “I hope not-Yeah?...we are?” it was strange that Cas found himself smiling a little wider, those words actually meant something to him and now he could be a little happier.

“alright then.” Dean nodded slowly. “you can always come to me cas - even if i didn’t remember you, I would have listened.” he reassured. “I’ve dealt with a fair few witches.” he nodded. “they’re terrible, nasty bitches. everybody’s human here anyway cas, for once you got nothing to worry about.” he reminded. “you won’t, I’m doing okay so far, sammy too.”

“I know-but I don’t think I could have come to you about what I needed advise on even if you had your memories.” Cas gave a small smile, tapping Dean on the shoulder while he gave a quick nod. “You’re wrong-i’ll always have something to worry about...you...” He paused and looked up at Dean, “Sam, Emma and Natasha. You’re all I have, I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you.”
