For all the many flaws of the tagging system on this hellsite, it is so perfect for Sending Home. A man's not dead while his name is still spoken, and what are the tags but the Overhead of tumblr? They aren't the posts themselves, but they are metacommentary on posts, notes to friends, info to be passed on. The message has been logged and is continuing to be sent on. GNU

the Murderbot Diaries opens from the point-of-view of a character who, from essentially the moment it gained (clawed its way to) free will, has made decisions based purely on two very specific motives:
to self-soothe and self-educate (through media consumption)
to protect the people around it
and this protagonist, who deescalates violence at every opportunity, who takes a thousand personal injustices in stride and only strives to do better, whose first-and-worst-and-most-brilliant act of self-reclamation—literally reclaiming its mind—was fuelled not by its need for freedom but by a desperation to never be forced to hurt anyone against its will ever again.
this person, when choosing a name for itself, a name it has full reason to believe no-one else will ever learn, a name it uses only in its thoughts, a name that serves solely as a personal reminder that it is a person—chooses MURDERBOT? i am thrashing writhing screaming into the palms of my bloodstained hands BABE
Be the Ent you seek in the world.
(When nature can’t fight back, we must fight on its behalf.)

obsessed with the way martha wells refuses to write an overarching plot for murderbot. every new book you think okay this is the one where she introduces the grand corporate conspiracy and recurring cast of corporate villains that set the premise of her next few books and instead she's like no actually i think i'll just put secunit in a Situation again

I've often theorized that the reason why Taln never broke in Braize is because he held out for so long that his nature as a cognitive shadow eventually calcified as someone who was incapable of it. As Vasher discussed in Rhythm of War, as a Cognitive Shadow, bit by bit the fluidity of your soul stiffens to weather the passage of time, solidifying traits you had in life as eternal. Immutable.
The most notable traits for Taln was his dependenability and his iron will. The more he suffered, the stronger he became until something snapped in him and he ceased to be a person and became a sapient seal. He didn't break, so he could not break. It was too late. His humanity was replaced by his mythology as the Bearer of Agonies.
To some extent, Taln did die on Braize. Even if he does recover from his stupor, he will probably forever be a thing whose existence is defined by suffering and his magical nature to withstand it. You cannot break Taln because Taln is unbreakable. Ontologically.
