“Thank you, Ava,” he said, making his way for the exit to leave the officer to her work.
“Thank you sir. Have a nice night sir. If you need me I’ll be in here.”
“Usually something incriminating is a good place to start. Please, if you’d be so kind as to begin looking into it right away, you would have my thanks.”
“I mean I know that sir. I will start right away. You are welcome. It’s my job.”
Violet glanced up at the woman, she didn’t recognize her. Both a good and a bad thing. “Are you married?”
“No I haven’t but I’m a good listener.”
“Over the weekend, there was some commotion on grounds affiliated with the ‘Black Spades’. I wanted to know if we brought anything in– evidence-wise– and if so, if it was anything worth looking at twice.”
“I just arrived back in town but i can start sorting through the mass of it all right now. is there something you want me to look for?”
“Like I said, Officer Cobalt, it’s fine. If you posed a threat to my person we would not be having this conversation.”
“Right -- Is there a reason why you came into the lab?’
“It’s fine. Though if you’d holster your weapon, I would appreciate it.”
She put it away quickly. “Sorry -- I didn’t mean to point it at you. I been busy with case works and I’m sorry sir.”
Violet sat thinking, she had needed to get away from the hotel. It was no surprise that her family was becoming overwhelming once more. Nick was no where to found, Nikki was angry with her for being so harsh, Dante was off doing god knows what, and she was still thinking about James. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she had violated her marriage despite her husband having opened it himself.
She heard someone approach from behind, “Have you ever done something that wasn’t technically wrong but you still feel shitty about it?”
Ava was caught off guard by the question, she was one to drabble in both good and bad of Wonderland. “Oh well, I’m not the best person to ask about this.”
“If I hear someone say ‘fuck the police’ one more time this week? I just might cuff their ass to a bike rack and eat the key.”
“That sounds like a terrible meal March. “
“My job, Officer Cobalt.”
“Oh it’s you sir. I’m sorry. I didn’t know anyone was here.”
What are you doing in here?
I heard a little rumour about you, Ava.
What rumor would that be?
The bane of my existence: Avander
“Look. Doesn’t matter why I need it.“ And when Ava mentioned quitting, Alex narrowed his gaze, not certain at first if she was joking. When he realized she was genuinely serious about trying to wash her hands of all mafia involvement, he took a sip of his coffee, sighed, and reached out to cover her hand in his. “That’s not how it works.” He tightened his grip. “Look–Ava. We’re in this together until one of us is in a body bag. That’s just what you signed up for.“
Ava sighed. “You don’t think I notice that -- You think I wanted this? I lived my whole working hard. And I moved here and I seen what goes on and you know what? I’m tired of being good -- I’m not good. I don’t know why people have to pretend to be good, nobody’s good. So I don’t need you to remind me? I mean it Alexander. I’m going to find my way out of this. Wether you want me to or not.”
A side job? Like…working the streets side job, or waitressing in some dingy bar side job?
It’s not exactly that kind of side job -- I can’t speak about it here. I’m a cleaner of sorts.
They are pretty. Bet they cost you a pretty penny, too, huh? Didn’t realize they were paying police officers so much these days.
They don’t -- i have a side job that allows me to pay anything I like.
Actually, I was just – ooh, are those Jimmy Choo boots?
Aren’t they makes such beautiful things? -- They are comfortable as well.
“’Course my friend is,” he said, turning on his heel, taking a step forward before pausing. “You know, Aves– I’d watch that perky little mouth of yours. Be a shame to see it in a jar.” With that he continued forward, blood dripping down his arm.
She stopped in her tracks, he meant it. She quickly hurried in her apartment before she closed the door she whispered. “The only thing that should be in a jar is you. Good night Josh. Take care.” She quickly locked her door, leaning on it -- “ Stupid jerk.”
“I never asked you to work with me to begin with. That was all your own fault,” he told her, taking a step closer, enjoying her disgruntled state. “It’s just a scratch. Superficial. If I was meant to bleed out, I’d have done it on the way over.”
Once she unlocked the door she turned to face him with a forced smile. “Your boss pays me well -- but not well enough to work with you again.” She said, Ava could feel her nerves getting the best of her. He made her nervous and fearful. ‘Well I can treat it if you want here I can get the first aid kid. Or is your friend going to let you in?”
