The brotherly love and telepathy between Gabriel and Michael
Now let’s talk about the “I’m one of his children TOO!” line while Michael is in Mallory.
I think at this point Michael is doubting that he chose the right path. That maybe Gabriel was right. Because if he was right, wouldn’t there be something to indicate it?
Also he is not in a good place because for better or worse, he did trust Becca Thorn and (maybe) loved her. And seeing what she was doing to one of his fellow angels and having the blade that nearly killed him RIGHT there makes him revert. Plus he almost hurt Alex who he swore to protect.
So he ends up in this small town after trying to pray to his father at least a few times. Probably hundreds but there’s not much if any answers. So he goes to this small town and these people are talking to what they think is GOD and are being talked back to.
It compounds the feeling that he isn’t good enough to answer. That he isn’t meant to hear his “father’s” words. That his father has lost faith in him. It’s what drives him (mostly) to sacrifice himself. To do one thing right and protect what he thinks are his father’s chosen people
Small headcanon based on this gifset
It’s not that Michael FAILED so much to catch David. Because let’s face it. There’s no way that a human being could fall so fast that an archangel couldn’t catch them.
It’s that he was never supposed to. David was meant to fall and (unfortunately) die. It was part of the plan and Michael did his part. It broke his heart that he had to watch the human boy his brother loved die but it hurt him more when he pictured Gabriel’s reaction.
But he is a good son and follows orders even if he disagrees with them. I like to believe that he was close enough while David was falling to comfort him and tell him brave he was. He might have even slowed him down (a bit) so that he passed painlessly

Forgive me. I shamed you for your mercy, for the light inside you. A light I covet.
Michael: I left to protect the Chosen One and Father’s markings. I did it all for us, for the family!
