Magickal Uses for Bay Laurel

Planetary Association: Sun Element: Fire Astrological Association: Leo Deity Association: Apollo, Aesclepius, Ceres, Zeus, Fides, Hermes and Cerridwen.

History and Folklore: Bay Laurel’s scientific name comes from the Latin Laurus meaning “verdant” and nobilis meaning noble, or of high rank.

The Greek word for Bay is dhafni, after the nymph Daphne who was changed into a bay laurel tree by Gaea (or her father Peneus, or herself, depending on who’s telling the story) to protect her from the unwanted advances of Apollo. The tree is sacred to Apollo and it is said that the Oracle at Delphi chewed the leaves and inhaled the smoke when seeking visions. It is also associated with honor and glory and kings, heroes, triumphant athletes, poets and other great men and women were crowned with it to signify their greatness in both ancient Greece and Rome. Garlands of bay laurel were traditionally bestowed upon the winners of the Pythian games in Greece and later the Olympic games (prior to the change, olive leaves were used).

Today, grand prix winners are given wreathes of laurel. The world laureate as in poet laureate and baccalaureate (lit “laurel berry”) and the term “to rest on one’s laurels” are additional reminders of the high status of this tree.

Laurel wreaths were worn for their protective properties. They were believed to protect against the anger of sky Gods and the Emperor Tiberius always wore laurel during thunderstorms to prevent his being struck by lightening. Doctors also wore laurel as it was considered helpful in curing nearly everything.

Magical Uses: Use in clairvoyance and wisdom teas. Place beneath the pillow for prophetic dreams and inhale for visions. Wear as an amulet to ward off evil and negativity, burn or scatter in exorcism rituals, and place in the windows to guard against lightning. Hang to prevent poltergeists from mischievous workings. Bay leaves mixed with sandalwood is burned to remove curses and evil spells. To ensure lasting love, a couple should break a twig off the tree, then break the twig in two and each keep a half. Wishes may be written on Bay leaves which then are burned to make them come true.

    Take the pen in your hands and focus all of your energy into it while whispering “Permi-maintenant” to it. “Permi” meaning permanent and “maintenant” meaning now in french. Lately, a few people seem to have latched onto the idea that it’s just plain dangerous to perform magic during a lunar eclipse, especially if you’re a “newbie.” There is absolutely no logical basis for this theory. If you’re worried enough about the state of your psyche that you believe it could be somehow damaged by doing magic during an eclipse, then you need to either (a) not do magic at all, or (b) learn how to ground, center and shield so you won’t self-sabotage any workings you do.

Some practitioners see the eclipse period–which is generally pretty short–as being the equivalent of an entire lunar cycle packed into one brief event. 

In some modern magical traditions, a lunar eclipse is considered a sort of metaphysical bonus round–in other words, any spellwork you do during this period is amplified and has a bit of extra power behind it. If you’ve been waiting around for a good time to do some serious spell work, this is it. Pick a goal that serves your or others in a big way. 

Looking for something a little different? Raise power during the supermoon by catching the light in a magnifying glass and charging the altar or spell elements with it.   

The supermoon creates an especially strong pull on the ocean tides, making it an ideal time to work with the element of water.

Perhaps your schedule doesn’t permit you to use this event at the height of its power. In that case, leave out some crystals or make some moon water to store the supermoon’s energy for later use.

Spell Challenge Day 4: Cleansing Moon Spray

(word inspired by: Moon)

Use this spray to purify a space or room of any negative energy. It may also be used to cleanse objects and altars. 

You Will Need:

Spray bottle (plastic or glass)

Moon Water–Water charged in moonlight

1 tsp of sea salt (amount varies depending on bottle size)

Moonstones to place around bottle (not in!)

Optional: 3 drops of lemon essential oil or 3 drops lemongrass essential oil (amount varies depending on bottle size)

Steps:

Clean out your spray bottle if needed. Take your moon water and fill the bottle with it.

Add one tsp of your salt into the bottle and stir it in until it dissolves.

Drop your essential oil into bottle, shake or stir to mix well.

Place spray down and surrounded with moonstones or place a moonstone on top of it.

“Moon, moon, purification is what I need. Moon, moon, cleanse my space please.”

Congrats you now have a nice cleansing spray! If you ever feel it lost its ‘umph’ for whatever reason leave it in the moonlight for a night or use more moonstones.

Stag Sweet Dreams Tea

I’ve had trouble sleeping for years,mostly because of my chronic pain.  Now post cyborg surgery it isn’t the pain that keeps me up, but the sensations from the implant that I feel instead of pain.  It’s constant and though pleasant it can be distracting.  I’ve tried Melatonin, but when I take it I don’t dream and I wake up feeling like I haven’t slept.  I tried some prescription sleep aids with unfortunate results, so lately I’ve been relying on this tea recipe. It’s soothing, and the little pinch of Mugwort promotes dreams.

1 part Chamomile

1 part Peppermint

½ part Lemongrass

¼ part Mugwort. 

Mix the herbs in a container with an air tight seal (to keep it fresh) and steep 1-2 tablespoons at a time in a mug or pot of near boiling water.  Sweeten to taste (preferably with honey to avoid any sugar hype).  Drink about ½ and hour before bed.

I feel like you meant 1-2 teaspoons instead of tablespoons here. 2 tbs of dried herb will make a strong, 1 quart batch of tea, that’s 4 cups. 1tsp is enough for a regular sized mug, 2 tsp is good for one of those big mugs that could double as a soup bowl :)

Valerian is another great herb for sleep as well as hops..  hops are super bitter, but also very effective. Mugwort is known for causing vivid dreams so if you already have lots of dreams, mugwort may not be a good fit for you.

As always, talk to an herbalist before taking any medicinal herbs! Especially if you’ve never taken it before, and even if you have, if you’re using a new dosage or want to use it more frequently, please consult an herbalist! Many herbs have medical interaction or other side effects, or just may not be a good fit for you energetically.
