BIOGRAPHY
as a child, nikolai had always been infatuated with science. for as long as he could remember, he would read any books about it that he could get his hands on. when he was old enough, he begged his parents to let him watch surgeries and other medical procedures, and his wish was granted when he was 12 years old. from then on, he’d bring a journal with him every time, furiously scribbling down notes while he watched.
in school, he excelled at his science classes, at least on paper. every written exam was passed with flying colors, but when it came to actual experiments, his hands fumbled. other classmates began to pass him in terms of skill, and nikolai began building a quiet resentment towards them. every less than perfect score on an assignment was a reminder of his failure, evidence written in ink that he lacked the skill to achieve what he so desperately wanted.
after finishing his education, nikolai did his best to establish himself in the world of scientific research, but found himself met with multiple rejections. he tried time and time again, but each attempt was met with “uninspired”, “modest”, or “already done”. his dedication to his craft was largely praised, but he watched someone else get picked over him because they showed ingenuity for years. eventually, he was able to secure a low-paying job where he performed routine operations. it wasn’t what he wanted for himself, he couldn’t help but feel like he could do so much more.
nikolai witnessed the passing of a childhood friend in his early adulthood, a woman who he had been in love with since early years. she had made it clear that she didn’t return his affections, so he kept them to himself while quietly pining after her. her death occurred shortly after her marriage to another, a tragedy. nikolai’s passion for science turned into obsession after this, believing that if he could bring her back, maybe she would finally love him.
driven to his wit’s end by grief and obsession, nikolai sought out the fairy godmother. he found her after months of searching, and fell to his knees, desperately pleading to be given a gift. his hands trembled as he begged to be given what he lacked, true scientific genius. she looked at him with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes, and it was given. nikolai felt an expansion in his mind as he suddenly had a perfect understanding of systems, along with cause and effect in relation to his experiments. but, there was a cost that he hadn’t been informed of before being given the gift. now, whenever nikolai wanted to say something less than true about his work and experiments, he found that he was rendered voiceless.
his newfound scientific genius opened new doors for him, he was able to secure more prominent jobs, but he felt his mind fraying every time he couldn’t speak a mistruth. the ethics and morals of his work were called into question, and he couldn’t defend himself. he knew what he was doing, and he couldn’t say otherwise. nikolai was now praised for his ingenuity, but was cast out of several positions for performing work that crossed moral lines. despite this, he was eventually offered a position working for the count, someone who wouldn’t question his work. nikolai accepted the position partially out of fear and partially because, deep down, he wanted it.
