🌑 . . . ╰──╮ SHADOWHEART STUDIED the priest, watching the firelight shift across their face & searched for any trace of a familiar memory. Nothing came. If Kaaldra had trully crossed his path before, that memory had been taken from him...
❝Yes, I'm sure. Let's just say we'd likely disagree on quite a few philosophical matters~❞ he replied lightly. Oh, if only they knew who they were sharing the campfire with tonight...
❝You serve an order that isn't exactly known for it's open-mindeness. The Vigil tends to see a deeply complex world in black and white, good and evil, with nothing in between. It makes for terribly dull conversation, you understand.❞
In their eyes, he was a MONSTER.
Something to be SLAIN on sight, without question.
IT ONLY TOOK a moment for the thoughts to connect for Kaaldra, frowning again. "I am not a Vigilant, just a priest." They pointed out though they were aware that for most people, there was no distinction between the two. And they were around the Vigilants enough that they might as well just be one.
But Kaaldra refused to just kill someone just because they had been labeled by the order.
That did not change the the fact that the group was rather harsh in their thinking. And Kaaldra had grown accustomed to the black and white even if they didn't quite agree with it.
Kaaldra believed in the good of the world even with how harsh it had been to them. And that faith in good extended to people unless they had a clear cut reason not to be welcoming. "They are simply trying to rid the world of what they consider bad." They let out a small sigh, twisting their head to face Shadowheart while still resting on their knees. "I don't deny that they are aggressive in their methods sometimes."
They let out a small hum, deciding to circle back a bit. "Philosophical differences...I think you'll find me to be more open minded than my counterparts." Open minded but perhaps still hesitant.
made this post and then never came back around to yap about them.
ANYWAYYYYYSSSSSS it's time to yap about this brother sister duo.
for those that don't know (somehow lol) avenion and mariloria are brother and sister. she's the older of the two by two years. neither of them were conceived simply because their parents wanted kids; they were always meant to feed into the vampire hunting efforts even if it was a long game. and avenion was only added because his parents realized that perhaps two would be better than one. they were always meant to be a duo.
despite that, mari and ave were raised with so much love that you would not know that they were brought into the world for one purpose. their parents really did truly care about them and made sure to raise them as well as could alongside teaching them everything that they knew. had either of them decided that they did not want to follow in their parents footsteps, they likely would have been supportive but it's hard to say for sure.
but the two of them excelled in the things they were taught and they filled the expectations their parents set for them and then some.
mari and ave were always supposed to balance each other other. there is no one without the other. they rely HEAVILY on each other in combat most of the time. they were also taught to not have to rely on others. if they are with a group, then they can meld and work with them. but the pair can conquer just fine on their own. mari serves as support and ave functions better as a tank.
perhaps another day i'll dive more into their fighting styles.
because of this, ave and mari are very reliant of each other outside of combat. they have gotten far better about it through the years so it's not as prevalent now. but as mentioned, there is no one without the other. it's rather rare for one to travel on their own. with their parents dead, they really just view each other as their only family.
mariloria is serious, no funny business, best with strategy. avenion is sweet, far more sociable, and can swing a warhammer like it's nothing. there is no life in which there is just one. especially for avenion. neither of them want to imagine what would happen if something happened to the other. the absolute devastation that would come from that is debilitating.
in the rare chance of them having a falling out for whatever reason, there would still be care for the other. they wouldn't ever truly hate each other. they, deep deep down, could never let go.
i'm gonna wrap it up here but leave y'all with this: mariloria has already mourned the death of her brother for whenever the time may come. avenion has not.
adapt to the hand that you were dealt. show them that you are s t r o n g e r than they could ever imagine.

TOMODACHI LIFE: LIVING THE DREAM : ' we haven't met before, have we? ' / @ofnxghtshade
🌑 . . . ╰──╮ SHADOWHEART WASN'T FOND OF needless acts of evil, but watching a follower of Stendarr torn apart by trolls?? That certainly didn't count. By Namira's covenant, it was his duty to end these hypocrites himself whenever possible.
But circumstance hadn't permitted it this time, or so he told himself when he'd stepped in to save the priest. Pragmatism demanded another set of eyes in these dangerous lands & he could only hope Namira would forgive him for bending the rules in order to see his mission through.
' we haven't met before, have we? '
ㅤㅤㅤㅤThe raven-haired Altmer had been stoking the flames with his magic in the abandoned Forsworn camp they'd found when Kaaldra broke the silence ( Shadowheart hadn't been particularly talkative thus far — he'd revealed only that he had urgent business in Winterhold ) .
Brows arched. ❝. . . I highly doubt it.❞ In truth, Shadowheart didn't REMEMBER. Most of his memories had been stripped away to protect his coven when he'd been sent to retrieve the artifact.
❝No offense, but you are not exactly the sort of company I would normally keep~❞ he added with a teasing lilt to his voice & a smile he knew they couldn't see.
❝You should try and get some rest... we're leaving at first light. I will keep watch.❞
THERE WAS NOTHING but gratefulness for the other man helping them. Saving them. Kaaldra had no doubt that had he not shown up when he did, they would have been as good as dead. A fate that they were too keen on meeting quite yet.
So now they sat there, trying to work through their own thoughts. Something about the stranger felt familiar to them. Sure, they couldn't physically see the features of others but Kaaldra had learned that there was a certain air around people whether that person knew it or not. And what they could just barely see was not entirely new.
A small frown appeared as he answered, not quite getting the answer they were looking for. "Are you sure? Now that the dust has settled, you seem familiar." Kaaldra mused as they shifted to pull knees to chest.
An amused hum managed to sneak its way out as he teased, the smile unseen though. "Oh really? And why is that?" Their head tilted in the direction of the fire and eventually rested on the tops of their knees.
The idea of getting some rest was rather enticing. There was no doubt that they were exhausted by the day's events. Fighting wasn't exactly their forte especially not fighting trolls. But they did want to continue to prod if given the chance.
🌑 . . . ╰──╮ ❝Harshly?❞ His brows lifted. ❝If I were being harsh, we wouldn't still be having this conversation right now.❞
He scoffed, caught somewhere between disbelief, annoyance & amusement at the other mer's persistence. For a moment, Shadowheart simply regarded him in silence, carefully weighing his choice of words. Rynaris clearly knew something & outright denial would only make him more suspicious.
Shadowheart's mind circled back to solving the problem permanently before this might become a threat to him or his coven... But first, he needed answers about what had tipped him off.
❝. . . Fine, then. Since you have apparently pieced together that I'm not among the mindless sheep worshipping the Aedra — yes.❞ There was unmistakable smugness in his tone ; oh, he was PROUD to be among the few who saw the truth! ❝I turned my back on those self-serving false gods long ago.❞
That was all Rynaris was getting from him (which was already too much).
A mocking smile tugged at his lips.
❝You're more observant than I first assumed. So~? What gave me away?❞
RYNARIS GAVE HIM a slight nod. "I will take your word for that." There was no doubt in his mind that he meant every bit of what he said. But it did not deter him in the way that it might others.
Spending far too much time alive made it easy to not become easily spooked. Though he was not brushing him off by any means.
Mindless sheep. It doesn't come as a shock of course. He's heard the same rhetoric plenty of times and it's always the same. Dangerous, in his mind, but it wasn't him being the one getting tangled into the mess of it all. Or at least not willingly. "To each their own then." Rynaris rolled his eyes, ignoring the smugness that seemed to have over taken Shadowheart. "You are not special for thinking that you're serving someone you deem better."
And there was zero surprise that he didn't get an answer to his question. He would put a pin in that for now and come back to it.
"You carry yourself in the same way that a good friend of mine does. And she has tied herself to Molag Bal. The lot of you tend to all be the same." A drastic over-assumption but that was not a concern in his mind. Rynaris let out a sigh, still giving the other a less than impressed look. "I don't care to meddle in whatever affairs you might have. I just want to know what kind of person I'm letting myself get involved in."
He was being kind. Too kind. More kind than she felt she deserved, really. All she'd done since they got back was be pissy and uncharitable and weird with him. How in Oblivion had she stumbled into someone like him? It felt like a gift from the Gods, one she did not deserve.
"Siblings, yeah?" Breina asked with a crooked grin, a more genuine laugh bubbling up in her throat. She'd met his sister - she could imagine what she'd say if it were Avenion in this position, not Bree. "First ones in line to call you names for being a dick. It's worth it for the trade-off, though, right? Gettin' to be the first in line to call them a dick right back."
Bree was neither shy about her own body, nor the kind who saw any kind of nudity as shameful. Her body was attractive (all muscles and freckles and scars), and in situations like this, it did not matter. She allowed him to help her pull the shirt off over her head and uninjured arm - it was then easy to slip the rest of it off herself. The fibres of her shirt stuck to the blood and yanked as they were pulled free, but she found relief in the fact nothing was pulling on the wound any more.
She then tossed the shirt directly into their fire. It wasn't like she could rescue it, and she had spares in her bag. Until he was done tending her wounds she would just have to sit there, tits to the world, and hope no-one attacked in the meanwhile.
Breina leaned over to give him a good look at the wound and scrunched up her face in pain. "Tell me how bad it is," she told him, "unless I'm about to die, or I've contracted vampirism. Then lie, and tell me I'm doin' great."
HEARING THE MORE genuine laugh from her got Avenion to smile again, glad that she was able to let herself relax a bit. He could not blame her for reacting in the way that she did but to see her recover from that was satisfying. And it just gave him more of a reason to continue to be kind in matters like these. "It's interesting, is it not, to have a sibling?" He laughed, a small shake of his head following. "We drag each other back and forth but you'd be the first to defend them."
At least that's how he would be with Mariloria. He'd give her hell over and over but the second things got dicey, he would be the first to be by her side. Not even a second of hesitation.
He let Bree work the shirt off the rest of the way once it was over her head, not even thinking twice as it was tossed into the fire. It was far too damaged to salvage and to waste the time trying. "I'm sure that feels better not having that rubbing up against it." Avenion mused, easily ignoring her nudity and focusing on the wound.
Now having a better view of everything, it was easier to take in the damage. He was careful in the way that he let his fingers prod at the area around the wound but he knew that it would still likely be uncomfortable. "You're not gonna die." A gentle laugh came out before he pulled back completely. "Nor do I think vampirism will be an issue. But better to be safe than sorry with a potion, right?" No need to run the risk.
Avenion moved to pull his bag closer to him, rifling through it for a moment. "We'll get you cleaned up and wrapped up. I think Mari might have a salve to help keep away any infection. You'll probably be out of commission for a bit to let it heal. Unless you know a healer nearby."
🌑 . . . ╰──╮ THE FLIRTATIOUS MASK shattered in an instant.
❝You should be very careful what accusations you throw around, Rynaris,❞ he warned, his tone deceptively calm.
ㅤㅤHe had half a mind to KILL Rynaris on the spot. What did he know?? & more importantly, how did he find out?
Shadowheart wasn't exactly what you'd call an "open book" as a travelling companion. His coven valued secrecy above all else — he had sacrificed even his memories to uphold it! Yet somehow, the other mer had noticed... something.
What, then, had given him away? Had something careless slipped from his lips in his sleep??
❝You know nothing about what I do or why. And frankly, it is none of your concern either. We're travelling together out of necessity, nothing more, and once we reach the next settlement, our ways part.... Unless, of course, you give me reason to end this arrangement sooner.❞
GREY EYES NARROWED as Shadowheart spoke. He knew that it was a risk bringing up the topic and a part of him knew that he should have just kept it to himself. There was no reason to meddle in the affairs of someone. And especially someone that he didn’t know deeply. But the other part of him wasn’t going to just let it go so easily.
Rynaris was quiet, letting the other get through everything that he wanted to say. He was a patient man even in moments like this. And he was willing to risk the violent reaction he could get in return.
“Perhaps I don’t know everything you do or the why behind it. But your reaction tells me that I am not wrong in my accusation. If it wasn’t true, you wouldn’t be defending yourself so harshly.” His voice was calm but his expression did not hide the concern that he felt. Maybe he was too caring for his own good and needed to work on letting that go. “I’m well aware of the fact that I cannot change your mind. I am not a naive fool."
He had been down this path before. And he wasn't really sure what exactly his motive was in approaching him about the topic. But he did know that it would not change his view on anything. "And who have you pledged your loyalty to?"
Tore accepted the invitation to sit readily, excitement prickling up his spine. Her response was perfect. His tutor in modern Nordic had a strange way of pronouncing Ancient Nordic words, like he was applying the rules of pronunciation for the modern tongue to ancient, but hers sounded completely natural. She was, at least, from his era. And nothing had so far brought him more excitement than the idea of finding kith.
"I am no scholar," he replied, setting his staff against the chair's arm and his things at his feet. From the depths of the bag he drew a golden mask, which he set before Suleyk for inspection. It was his mask, a mask with serpents fangs set into the faceplate as fitting his priesthood name. Vith - the Serpent, in Dovahzuul. "I believe I came after you. I was born on the eve of the war between Nords and Atmorans, before Alduin was cast forwards in time. I was born just at the right time to find a way to follow him forwards, until he returned, as the Scrolls foretold. Your name is familiar to me."
He leaned forwards, unable to hide the slight tinge of excitement that bled through his carefully constructed facade. "I came to see if the rumour I heard was true, and that someone else from our people had found a way to drift forwards until his return."
And then, he switched language again. This time, to the language spoken by the Priesthood - Dovahzul. "I'm looking for my own kind. For priests who would rebuild the cult of old with me. I am looking for allies, Suleyk, and I think you may be one of them."
THE WAY THAT he iterates that he was not just simply an overeager scholar caught her attention, no longer so eager just to brush the man off as if all of this was nothing. She watched him with intrigue while he dug through his bag and it was impossible to stop the way that her eyes widened just a bit at the sight of the mask. For a moment Suleyk just let herself stare at the familiar item. With a small glance back to him, she carefully picked it up and turned it about in her hands.
Her thoughts were moving far faster than the words that wanted to come out. Never would she have expected to see such a thing. Or be approached by someone claiming to be another priest. "I'm sure my name is familiar to you. I doubt they painted me in a good light." Suleyk let out quietly. Not that it bothered her in the slightest. Though she was rather curious to know just what sort of story they told of her.
"Vith..." She said the name quietly, looking towards him as he leaned forward. The name was unknown to her but that made sense considering he came after. "I did not come forward in time in the way you might have." Suleyk offered his mask back to him, tempted to fetch her own from a nearby room.
Another smile appeared as he switched languages again. Oh how she could do that all day long especially now that the languages were long gone. "You want to rebuild the cult?" Her response came in Dovahzul and she took a moment to consider the idea. "And how exactly do you plan on doing that? I have not been around in this time for very long but it does not take much to notice that things are very different."
She paused, reminding herself that she needed to stay skeptical. Suleyk wanted to believe the perfect pronunciation and the mask were enough but she knew better than to trust so easily. "And how am I to trust you?"
THERE WAS A part of Rynaris that couldn't help but feel bothered by the fact that Shadowheart looked rather entertained. He knew that he wasn't the most intimidating person but for the other to be entirely unbothered was almost just a slap in the face itself.
His grip tightened a bit, forcing himself to stay focused even as the other practically purred at him. "This isn't exactly the best place for those kinds of activities." Tempting if he really had to admit it. More than he really wanted to acknowledge right then in the moment.
"You're a fool, you know that?" Rynaris nearly hissed before finally letting go of his wrists. Though he stayed close, wanting to at least keep their conversation between them. "Willingly dealing with daedra."
