A low grumble, uncomfortable truth brushed aside with a hand. He won’t admit guilt; why should he? They both know it. Anyway, that’s not what’s knitting his brow or God forbid, prompting tears. “But where is it written that YOU have to go with him?” Some things just aren’t in the scripture; or if they are, it’s bad news for a father. With a sigh Tevye surrenders, lets his hand be captured. “And how LONG will he be there?” Still the safe pronouns. He can’t bring himself to say ‘you.’

tzeitel stiffens with her papa’s tone, eyes quickly averting back to the ground. she ached terribly. if she were this overcome with emotion, she couldn’t even begin to imagine what he must be feeling. they were left with too many questions, too many open doors and unsure of which one would be the right one to make it all go back to the way it used to be. what chava had done, to marry outside of their faith and to disobey their papa in such a way——– it was something even tzeitel could never do. but, she understood. chava had done it for love. a love she had seen grow through motel and tzeitel. it shouldn’t be something she felt guilty for, and yet. all of it had begun with them. tzeitel would never once wish away marrying motel, but there were times where she wondered just what their lives would be like if she hadn’t. what life with her sisters safe and present would be like. ❝ of course not, papa, ❞ she took a brief pause. ❝ but this is what she chose. i know it is not what is ideal for us, but—– she is happy. we must remember that. ❞
It’s tempting to look for somewhere to put the blame. But everywhere Tevye searches, no space seems to be open. At least not directly. He can’t rail at the guilty party, any of them, because they’re not here. The cross may loom high above, but there’s a distance and a separation between them. Right now Tevye likes it that way, more than ever. He never cared for the priest. Now he curses the man with every word in his head, every bone in his body. This Fyedka stole his daughter, the priest helped him. Robbers! Bandits! He still has daughters but the Chava-shaped hole will never be filled. “Happy? How can she be happy?” The notion is as foreign to him as these Russians. “Without her family, her people, she is nothing. She has nothing! You and Motel, you’re poor as field mice but you still have us, the village... even in Siberia, Perchik’s not the only one of us to receive a personal invitation. But... can this Fyedka really be her whole world? Is that what this new world looks like, my daughter?” If so, he knows his age is past. He must suspect it already.

“What is it? Something I said?” Easier to treat lightly, lift the burden a little. But still it’s not hard to guess the reason. It was a kind of survival instinct, helped along in this case by hard evidence. The village had proved to be inhospitable. Not because of them— because of the others, may they be bitten by fleas in a hurricane. Good thing they didn’t rely on tourism. Anatevka was more a place you stopped because you were going to have to stop somewhere, not because it looked enticing.
“You’re sure? The girls will be so disappointed.” Emotional blackmail; also true. The younger ones especially had taken to her. Even now they hung off her hem. For all his recent misgivings Tevye didn’t want her to go, not exactly. Their little house would feel bigger and somehow quieter with her gone. That wasn’t necessarily a good thing.

The all-important question of Hogwarts sorting
There are the characters you only have to take one look at them and you know exactly what House they’re in. Then there are the tougher cases. Tevye is definitely one of those. He has a Hufflepuff’s work ethic, the bold forwardness and hot temper sometimes associated with Gryffindor, the Slytherin’s cunning (he concocts an elaborate dream to get around his wife) and ambition (his frequent desire to get out of poverty and into wealth), and last but not least, the Ravenclaw’s love of learning. I don’t think he’d merit a genuine hatstall but I’m certainly having trouble placing him.
Slytherin’s not right because as much as he dreams of riches, he’s not going out to get it. The one time he takes such a risk (in the story “The Bubble Bursts”) it completely blows up in his face and he concludes what he’s already believed, that honest hard work is the only real way to make money. At least, for him it is. Let others gamble away their life savings in stocks and bonds. As for Gryffindor, it’s not wrong— yes, he’s easily spooked, a little superstitious; but look at Neville. When the chips are down Tevye’s not afraid, or at least he puts up a good front. But he’s not going to be the first to jump on any bandwagon, least of all for change. And he’s no hero. Not like Perchik.
Which leaves a difficult decision. Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. I’m tempted to say Hufflepuff just because so much of the House aesthetic is very Tevye— earthy. My one hesitation is his core desire that we see in “Rich Man”. He wants to study. He quotes things constantly and badly, which only shows his enthusiasm outstrips his knowledge. He’d like to know more, learn more... but crucially, only within certain boundaries. His conversation with Chava about Gorky in “Chava” shows he has limited interest in learning beyond the perimeters of his world of traditions, something that would never restrict a true Ravenclaw.
So, looks like I have another Hufflepuff on my hands.
If “Do You Love Me?” doesn’t make you positively melt with the cute... I adore the way Tevye’s a dog with a bone— he knows his answer and he’s pretty sure he knows hers but he’s going to make her say it. Wear her down, for more than just scoring points— with love being the new vogue, he genuinely wants to know. Hence why he pursues it so strongly.
Even if you can’t sing well, sing. Sing to yourself. Sing in the privacy of your home. But sing.

Grantaire smiled at the man and let himself be guided. He was, honestly, quite a bit away from home, but it was nice to find people who were willing to extend a hand. It was the sort of thing Enjolras and Feuilly would be proud of. “It would be the least I could do,” he said, his accent and hesitance with the language keeping his normally verbose speech short. Grantaire climbs up beside and sets his bag in his lap. “Grantaire. But you can call me R, most do.”
Because the young man was a stranger, his reticence struck Tevye (wrongly) as shyness. Well, that was nothing new. The tailor’s son hung around like a little puppy and was often their guest. What was another one? But Tevye’s attitude didn’t morph for his benefit. He was still as voluminous as ever. Maybe to make up for the extra silence. “Well then, Reb R,” he said with a crooked smile for the curious name as he got the horse moving, “where are you coming from, and where are you going?”
