After Lysetta had gifted her the ukulele, Winnie’s training day had gone remarkably better than the one before it. Suddenly it was as though she was revitalized, filled with energy that came from having something to fight for. She had felt most of her fight deflate from her when the officials back home took her guitar, and it was a good feeling to get some of it back.
As the afternoon continued, Winnie had set up camp at the traps and snares station, working carefully with a patient trainer and a few coils of wire to work on some simple traps. Tension and balance were things she understood, and wire was not foreign to her, but it was the act itself of making traps that she wanted to understand. She was a quick study, and hummed to herself as she worked. “Loop it under, then over, then around the corner, fasten it tight and tip it off…” she softly sang under her breath, committing each unique loop to memory.
Winnie looked up after finishing one of the tougher snares and spotted Rowan approaching. She waved him over with a huge smile and hurried forward to meet him with a quick kiss. “Want to see what I made?” she asked softly, taking him by the hand back to her collection of traps. // @ofvigilcnce
Rowan was beginning to feel like he was suffocating. Being forced to stay in this building for a prolonged period of time was torturous. He craved the forest, craved the feeling of tree roots on the bottoms of his feet, craved fresh air. But whenever he found himself at the front door of the building or on the roof, he found a peacekeeper shoving him back inside or a trainer telling him off for being someplace he wasn’t supposed to be.
Freedom was something that was a luxury around here.
So, if he wasn’t allowed to leave, he figured he would find Winnie, and that he did, finding her working on something in some corner of the training room in classic Winnie fashion. She wasn’t going to give up, he loved that about her.
“Yes, show me, show me, you incredibly talented human person, you.”
