Hello! My name is Mouse, I’m 20+, and this is an RP and ask blog for BJ from David Peace’s Red Riding series! I am frequently lurking, but pretty slow when it comes to responding to threads and asks, so please be patient! Below are the abridged guidelines for this blog. You can find them in full here.

"—Christ...!" Barry James Anderson swore under his breath and danced away from the shattered bottle glass skittering across the pavement. He curled the hand cradling his cigarette closer to his chest, back flattening to the wall. If he weren't a coward, if he'd not learnt to stay alive by minding his own fucking business, he might have helped the poor sod out. Instead, BJ stayed still, made himself small, while the bullish drunk bashed the stranger's face in.

With a final wet thump, the brute let the man fall to the floor in a battered heap. "Fuckin' puff," he spat. "I'll kill you." But not tonight. He slung the blood from his knuckles and pushed his way back into the bar.

Gone. Gone for now.

And hopefully will be too pissed to remember this come tomorrow, BJ thought.

Glass crunched under BJ's boots as he picked his way to the body and crouched. The tail of his heavy faux fur coat dragged the ground, brushing into the bits of bottle and splashes of cheap whiskey, and puddling blood. He was beyond caring.

"You're alright, love." A little nudge—then arms suddenly tucking beneath theirs to haul them up. Groaning. "Come on, up you go, like. That's it. Can you walk?" No? "Well, you've got to."

BJ did not let them give in. He shouldered their weight as best he could and they hobbled down the walk until BJ could shrug the man off onto a bench. They collapsed there, smelling of sweat and booze. The man was bleeding all over BJ's nice corduroy shirt.

"Stay awake, alright? What's your name?"

"Do you like it?" BJ, half for them-half for his own delight, spun once. The sequined cocktail dress glittered as if studded with thousands of tiny rubies. It fit a little awkwardly and needed pinning at the bust, the spaghetti straps slipping over his shoulders, but BJ couldn't have looked happier. "Lorelei gave it to me, straight from the Fireball's wardrobe. They meant to buy a tear-away but someone fucked the order up."

He'd been embarrassed to be clocked so swiftly, but if it had to be anybody, BJ was relieved it had been one of the girls. Stripping might not be the same as selling cheap blowjobs and sex on street corners but they ran the same enough clientele that he always felt a sort of comfort and kinship with them. So when Lorelei caught him staring a little too admiringly at her new dress for "Lori Luxe", or how his eye followed the red stain of lipstick on her glass, he'd not been too bothered when she winked and pulled out the glitzy number he wore now. These were secrets he knew would stay safe with them.

And, now, he hoped, with the friend he modelled for now.

"Nah," thoughtful, "the only thing I ever really wanted to do was work at the firehouse, with my Dad." It was weird, how sort of - transparent this felt? Like he was a walking piece of cellophane, see-through, maybe tinted red. There had been a long period of his life where TK had thought maybe he wanted to escape, or get away, or just - get out but he'd never moved cities and he'd never stopped working to get into the firehouse, and God, he had been happy when he could first join the Academy. God, he'd been relieved.

He'd spent six years on the Fire team and they were some of the best years of his life. He loved his job now, being a paramedic was who he was, but the teenage TK who lived in his memory would have been stunned to know TK moved even that far away from his dad, even to the next vehicle over in the firehouse.

"And you could not pay me to leave these guys now. They're my home." He was so happy here, actually. It filled up his chest, sat warm and full there, as gentle as the sunlight. No. TK would not go with BJ, not now, not here, not in this place where he was loved the way he had wanted so badly to be loved.

"I'd visit you, though." Truthful. He would want to. An addition: "You'd have to provide the spacesuits." (Plural; the assumption that the rest of the 126 would want to visit him, too.)

It would never get old, the way talking about the 126 lit up TK's face. He spoke about it the way some people spoke about the loves of their lives, with that kind of all over smile that made them look lighter than air and full up with contentment. BJ loved watching him. He'd listen to TK talk about the 126 all day just to see him look so happy.

"Aye." He grinned. "Shiny silver ones."

BJ wondered if TK meant it, though. Not about going to space, of course not. That wasn't really what either of them were talking about. But... if he had to go. If Ghosts of Bloody Christmases Past came to haunt him, and his little sanctuary was forced to uproot... Oh, it was unlikely, he knew, but what if? What if this was all conditional? What if all of these dinners and game nights and weekend movies and lazing at the park were all pretty, shiny things distracting him from the inevitability of something terrible coming for him? What if BJ fucked it up and had to run, because God knows he would not let TK or Mel fall by way of all his dead friends, what then?

Anxiety wound through his guts and soured his stomach.

He knew "what then". If it came down to it, he'd vanish. No warning. No goodbye. And he'd be alone. And. And maybe that was simply how Barry James' Anderson's life was meant to be. Maybe some things were always doomed to be hunted.

BJ's breath shook when he exhaled. Space-alien, back to earth. Clumps of grass stuck between his tightly clenched fingers. He'd not realised he'd tensed them.

He needed to chill out. He was having fun. This was supposed to be fun. Instead, he could feel himself trying to come untethered again over fucking hypotheticals.

Why couldn't he be normal?

BJ sat up, wiped his palm on the knee of his trousers, and plucked a loose cigarette and BIC from his jacket's inner pocket. The slightly sharp texture of the spark wheel against his thumb and the subsequent burn of smoke as he inhaled were comforting. The ground solidified beneath him.

"Sorry," he said after a few pulls. He didn't make a habit of smoking in front of TK if he could. It seemed like the courteous thing. "I won't finish it, I just need... y'know. Wanted one." Exxxhaaaale. "How did you know they were home? I thought Mr. Strand dragged you here." A lopsided smile. "Kickin' and screaming?"
