it's very rare to be left speechless in the diner. she's been working here ever since she arrived in the country, she's seen it all, proposals gone horribly wrong, customers trying to cook in the kitchen to get their meal for free, one guy threw his plate like a frisbee and it shattered so hard against the wall that a large piece got stuck in the plaster. last week, a little girl threw a tantrum that involved her racing around to all the tables and throwing other customers' food to the ground. just an hour ago, in a move that resulted in the diner actually closing early, a young man got so excited over his exam results that he swung out his arms in delight, caught an unsuspecting motorcyclist in the head, and her helmet shattered the large window covering one stretch of the diner.
both parties are fine. they made perfectly sure of that. no charges will be pressed, either; richard knows a guy, after all. the point is, she's seen a lot of stuff go down from the angle of the diner.
but when a young lady with blonde hair walks in, dazed, highly likely in shock, shakily approaching the horrified edwina, she has to re-evaluate just how much she's really seen. the woman speaks hoarsely, but audibly. she pays for her black americano with a card that she seems to hold grimly, and takes a seat at a booth in the farthest possible corner of the diner, where she stares with a myriad of expressions at her phone screen, seemingly oblivious to the blood that coats the hands that cradle coffee cup and phone alike.
" no. no, don't call anyone. just go on upstairs, okay? i'll look after her. just go upstairs, try and stay calm. i'll... i'll give connor a buzz later on, right? you go on ahead, 'wina, it's all okay now. "
she doesn't move again until edwina has vanished in the corridor, and her footsteps are heard on the landing overhead. then, and only then, does aisling collect a forest-green first-aid kit from the counter, a wedge of rhubarb tart, and a can of cidona before approaching the lady in the corner. it's with a gentle, quiet tone that she speaks again. " miss? hi... i'm sorry to bother you, only, you look like you might be hurt. i was wondering if you'd like me to sit with you for a bit, just to clean you up a little? my name's aisling, i have first-aid training. "
