don’t get me wrong, “batfamily” is great and all but when it’s too nuclear, it is annoying. I get why people call Dick Bruce’s “son”, obviously that’s the way it’s been leaning for a long time, even within canon comics and media. I just wish people would remember and appreciate that it was established to be less familial and more mentor/mentee, that they were demonstrably not portrayed as father and son for a long time since their inception, that they were two guys hanging out, and it only started relying heavily on father-son roles when it was too scary for pearl-clutchers to fathom them having any relationship that isn’t within the sphere of nuclear christian family values simply because the idea of homosexuality is repulsive and frightening for them. honestly we should push back on that. level the playing field as it were. let them kiss with tongue. etc.

exactly this. i’m out here fighting for my life trying to push back. it makes me feel insane. YES, there’s always been the “he’s like a father to me / he practically raised me” comments over the years. but this very specific thing where dick directly calls him “dad” (FULL BODY REVULSION SHUDDER) and how now bruce can’t mention dick at all without appending “my son” to the start of his name is so visibly telling to me. this isn’t isn’t about, like, “elaborating” on their relationship. it’s so obviously and specifically meant to curtail any hint that they could be in any way “inappropriate” when showing affection or care for each other that it makes my head catch on fire just thinking about it.

because like, it goes beyond the homophobia of it all, too; why can’t these two adult men love each other in ANY way other than weird “dad/son”? why can’t they be brothers? why can’t they be best friends? why can’t they be student and master? why can’t they be two human beings with a complicated but very deep relationship that has no easy definition? even from a platonic angle all the non-nuclear family options are cut off.

i’m 39. i’ve loved these characters for more than 25 years. it has NOT always been “obvious father and son.” it has very much been a flexible thing until recently. i’m not just going to give ground on this so people feel more comfortable with their own daddy issues, lol.

YES. it’s so watered down. it takes away the nuance and complexity of homosocial relationships that men have with one another. people think that dick and bruce referring to each other as dad and son is the epitome of an expression of love between them because there is this insane idea that that’s the only acceptable kind of love between two men.

because anything else would sound GAY. and DC has made bruce wayne and dick grayson fight those allegations for like 70 years and are very adamant about still defending those poor poor characters from being perceived as gay by any means. just because people can’t seem to think of relationships as anything but a dichotomy of romantic and familial.

They are chums with decades of history and only ten years age difference in many canon. I do not give shits about what TTaylor says now.
