((was gonna respond before DnD, realized I couldn't do this level of comics bullshit justice in that time limit))
"I guess they were technically still time travelers, just not in the way they thought they were..."
The young hero is dressed in blue, yellow, and black. He's sporting a ponytail that is probably more fashionable in a different time period.
"They were actually kidnapped from my time period and brought forward in time by one godlike entity to be used as sleeper agents in a war against another godlike entity. They had their memories erased and rewritten to be made to believe they were actually from that future."
The hero crosses his arms in front of him, a protective action. Self-soothing. A shrink would look at his posture and point to him putting a barrier between himself and the world, for all that he keeps up a show of easy confidence.
"It gets pretty wild. They come back in time to try to kill the mother of one of the godlike entities, who turns out to be Wonder Girl, someone who's like a sister to me, one of my best friends. She's a hero. She's saved the world on multiple occasions!"
"Things happen, my team and theirs were able to stop the other godlike being from ensuring he'd exist and also make sure my soul-sister and her new baby survive. They can't return to their future, though. One of them had been in a relationship with my future self and tried to make that happen, but I was very happily monogamous with my girlfriend and not interested."
"My future self shows up after a bit though! Except he's one of the people who were kidnapped and had their memories altered. He looks exactly like me, has all my mannerisms, has all my memories - whoever he used to be, there's nothing left. The godlike entity that kidnapped him essentially copied my brain into a body that has been generically modified to match mine. It's enough to give a guy identity issues, right?"
The smile is bright and broad and tight at the edges.
"Especially after he gets on the wrong side of the personification of pure evil and becomes corrupted. That guy who thinks he's me...it's really bad, y'know? There are some things you don't think you'd ever be capable of doing, but how does that extend in a situation like that? His lover gets pregnant and traumatized from what he does, and then he gets so sadistically obsessed with the idea of a baby she has to fake a miscarriage to escape him."
'Sooo...the people from the future who were actually from the past. At some point we all find out that the future they had come from was actually a fake timeline yet another godlike entity was using to train sleeper agents for when all the timelines start to collapse so he'd have a superpowered army. It didn't work, and only three of their team survived the collapsing timelines."
"Anyway, that's what I've been dealing with lately. It's kept me busy."
Silence builds between them as the hero mentally reviews the story, realizes that he's trauma-dumped a lot onto this random guy with time-travel experience, and decides not to care. He jerks his thumb over his shoulder at the gloomy city behind him.
"That's Gotham City. My dimension's most crime-ridden city in America. It's a mess, but it's home, y'know? Want to visit?"
