“No problem. It was fun, I hadn’t been camping since I was a kid but it’s still was still as great as I remembered.“ He said helping her walk to the building. “You’d ever been camping before?”

“Oh yeah, used to go camping all the time as a kid. We couldn’t afford holidays so even if it was going to a field nearby and just camping out then we’d do it. It became a tradition.” She smiled fondly at the memory.

“Honestly you get used to it pretty quickly. know the places to avoid and the places to go when you want to be avoided.” she mentioned. “sinead.. what a interesting name…i think i’ll call you sin.” she mused and held her hand out. “kelsey.””

“To avoid? Where am I supposed to avoid?” She asked. Where in the school could possibly be a place to avoid? Any advice was good advice, right? “Sin works just as well.” She smiled to her. “Nice to meet yer Kelsey.”

“Please don’t, I get scared easily, you wouldn’t like to see me scream like a kid.” Elijah said with a smile, shaking his head. “The movie is good, you’ll like it!”

“But that sounds so fun.” She was clearly joking. No part of her could purposely try to scare him. It wasn’t in her.  “You never know! Might be a new favourite.”

“Okay, that sounds like a good deal for me!” Elijah said as he shook the other girl’s hand. “You’ll see, it’s actually a pretty good movie, and there’s not as many jumpscares. But it’s still scary.”

“Perfect.” She smiled to him. “I’ll take your word for it but if it has loads of them, I’m going to jumpscare you.”

“It’s fermented vegetables, usually cabbage,” he explained. He then thought for a second before deciding “Definitely bulgogi. It’s super thinly sliced meat that you cook on a grill yourself, usually with onions for flavor and shit. It’s fucking delicious.” He then nodded towards her. “What about you? Scotland has to have a dish you love, right?”

“It doesn’t sound nice but you never know.” She shrugged. “What type of meat we talking? Red meat, white meat?” She asked to find out more. “Well, we’re known for Haggis which is sheep intestines. Spoiler; it’s disgustang!” Sinead laughed. “But I do love the fresh fish we get there. And Scottish shortbread. And whiskey.”

“Oh, I can show you a dance whenever you want,” Jia beamed, putting her hair into a bun on top of her head. “I learn choreography for fun so I always have a dance to show off.” Her eyes lit up at that. “Oh, that’s so cool! Could I hire you to make something for me?” she asked. “Just tell me your rate and we can work something out. I’m going to need something stunning for Homecoming.”

“Oh wow! Maybe when we’re back at school. I wouldn’t want you dancing on this ground.” It was uneven and she was concerned about the other maybe hurting herself. “Oh yeah, I could definitely do that. I’ve never really been commissioned before but I’d definitely work with you on what you wanted for a homecoming dress.” Any money she received from doing stuff like this would most likely go to help her mum and siblings.

“Oh, we can watch it together, I don’t mind.” Elijah said with a chuckle. “They’re not that scary and I can always warn you when there’s going to be a jumpscare, because I’ve seen them more than once.” Elijah said and smiled. “Thanks, it’s always good to know that.” 

“Okay, when we’re back, we can have a movie night with popcorn and I’ll watch it from behind a pillow. Deal?” She put her hand out to him to agree on it.

“They’re the best horror movies ever, you should really give it a try, I love watching them!” Elijah said and nodded. “I just watched the first three Saw movies, I never got into it. I will one of these days though.” Elijah said and nodded. “Well, thanks for thinking that. I’m sure there’s a lot of people that don’t think like you.”

“I think I’d need to watch them with someone... and have someone stay with me for like a week constantly.” She laughed. “The first three are alright films, first being the best of the franchise but after that it just gets kinda far-fetched.” She shrugged. “Maybe not but at least you can feel better knowing I do.”

“No, now I can, though,” he smirked before shrugging. “It’s fine. Have you heard of kimchi? That’s the dish most people have at least heard of, even if it’s not my favorite.”

“You got me there.” She laughed. “Oh, I’ve heard of it. No idea what it is though. What’s your favourite? And fair warning, you’ll have to tell me what it actually is and not just the name for my own curiosity.”

“I can’t help but be nice to a pretty girl like you,” Jia smiled before shrugging. “Well, I’m a cheerleader, but dance is basically my life. I’m hoping to be a professional dancer after I graduate, like maybe a backup dancer for kpop stars or something. What about you?”

She could feel her cheeks still heating up and moved her hands to brush against the skin as a natural reaction to hide them. “Dancing, that’s awesome! I’ll have to see you dance sometime.” She suggested. “I like sewing clothes and designing them. I used to run charity fashion shows back in my little town. Made all the dresses and suits myself.”

“Oh I was a little shit of a kid because of it,” he chuckled. “Didn’t have any friends ‘til first grade because I would throw shit and scream Korean words until someone figured out what I wanted.” He shook his head at the memory before shrugging. “I’ve visited a few times since I left, and it’s pretty cool, just super different. The food is better there, though, for sure.”

“I don’t blame you!” She shook her head. “At least you weren’t old enough to be swearing at them all in Korean.” She joked. “I hate to sound ignorant but I don’t think I know any Korean food...” She tried her best to think of a single dish and couldn’t.

“What are you talking about, the ones with supernatural stuff are the best ones! Have you seen both of The Conjuring? They’re really good. But I do like slasher movies too, I love Scream, those are my favorite slasher movies.” Elijah said with a smile. “That’s good, we need more people like you around school.”

“I can’t do it! I freak out at every little sound I hear with those. I don’t dare see the conjuring.” She argued with a shake of her head. “The original Saw films are good too but the last one doesn’t even count as far as I’m concerned.” She crossed her arms. “Thank you. I try but you seem like me too. You seem really nice and lovely.”

Her blush was adorable, and Jia made a mental note to try and keep it there as long as possible. “Aw, damn, we could’ve hung out,” she said with a slight pout before shooting her a dazzling smile. “Well, at least we have now, right? I cannot wait to get to know you better.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, I know all about the whole ‘toning down an accent’ thing. Spent my first few years of life in Korea, so once I got to kindergarten, I had to work on making sure people could understand me.”

“I bet that was harder though. I’d get frustrated that people couldn’t understand me anyway and if I was that young? I don’t know where my emotions would be. I don’t envy you there.” She understood but she did think it would have been harder. She could comprehend speaking slower and making sure to change her voice but for a kid, it must have been harder to understand how to change that so fast. “Korea sounds interesting though. Do you remember much of it?”

“I do like horror movies.” Elijah said and nodded. “I guess you’ll have to wait and meet him to see.” He said with a smile. “I’m sure she will be nice, most of the girls around here are pretty nice, I’m sure the two of you get along.”

“Same but I can’t deal with the supernatural/paranormal stuff. It freaks me out even if I know it’s just a bit of rope opening a door.” She shuddered. It was a surprising fact that she actually liked slasher films considering her outlook. “I mean, I’m like a puppy. I like pretty much anyone no matter what so they’ll be okay with me.”

“Beautifully, thanks to you,” Jia said, leading her towards the lake. “I didn’t see you at the bonfire last night, did you skip it? Or was I just too drunk to catch that gorgeous smile?”

“No problem at all.” Sinead smiled. Jia had worked out the hack to constantly keep Sinead blushing. It was compliments that were her weakness. “I skipped it. It’s kinda nerve wracking when you don’t really know people to be in that big of a crowd. I saw it for a second and then kinda went back to my tent.” She confessed.

“Nice to meet yer.” She smiled. “Only a little bit out! Scottish. Toned down Scottish I should add.” Sinead chuckled. “You’d have no idea what I was saying if I went full Scot.”
