Despite how selfish Kogami can be, he does truly care about Akane’s well being. Although he’s not willing to put her feelings above his personal goals and desires, he wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice both his own physical safety as well as his personal goals in order to protect her.

Although he may have not have had a lot of respect for her initially, she did eventually earn his respect as an enforcer and friend.
