Someone in the Sigma tag was asking that question the other day. Why do I like an ugly old man?
Well, first of all, ‘ugliness’ is relative and not a determining factor here. Torbjorn’s uglier and he still has a hot wife and like fifty kids, so jot that down.
I’ve always had a bit of a ‘thing’ for older men–Reinhardt is definitely my go-to Overwatch husbando if someone asks me “If you had to marry one…” I’ve also always had a thing for doctors and scientists. Height and stature is a big factor, too.
But in spite of that, I wasn’t really attracted to him when I first saw him. Intrigued? You bet. A brilliant old man with scientific and musical motifs? And relatable trauma? I definitely wanted to see more of him. I haven’t been interested in Overwatch or its characters for over a year, and this was the character that got me playing again.
It wasn’t until I started playing him that I felt more than “Oh, he’s an interesting character.” Before every match, he’s professional, eager to begin, and quick to remind everyone to double–triple–quadruple check your math! He wants this experiment to go well, and he wants the rest of you to do well, too.
And the passionate way he talks about the nature of the universe when he looks into the telescope at the moon base, waxing philosophic about the stars and the horizon…Dr. de Kuiper loves his work. I’d listen to him go on and on about it for hours if I could, just to see the way his eyes would light up when he talks about his passion.
The way he said his ‘thank you’ lines were what really got me interested. For someone stated to be working with Talon, he sounded genuinely kind and thankful for the help–which surprised me. He sounded like a man you could bring coffee in the mornings and he’d say thank you with a smile, even if it’s not his particular favorite. He would appreciate the sentiment.
And then there’s his mental illness. As someone who is also mentally ill, I do think I’d be able to relate to him about things that neurotypical people don’t. Like people not understanding what’s going on inside your head or WHY you do things. We could have venting sessions about our problems. Maybe even go to therapy together. Support one another.
TL;DR: I love Sigma because he’s a kind old man who is passionate about space and the universe, and someone I know would understand why I’m upset when the Bad Days are particularly bad.
