It was warm. I remember this. It was summer and all the flowers were in bloom. The snapdragons my mom and dad spent a whole Saturday planting lived next to the brick path leading up to the entrance of my home. And she stood there. She’d wait for us on the porch like a good girl. She was patient. She was my Roxy. The first thing to steal my heart. My tiny arms would wrap around her and she’d stand there all frozen before slime drizzled out of her wet, gooey mouth. My black lab.

I don’t live in that house anymore. And my parents aren’t married anymore. And Roxy passed away last year. But it’s okay. I’m okay. I hope the new people have planted snapdragons. I hope they’ve pinched them so they can pretend to hear a tiny crackle to convince themselves that’s why they’re called “snapdragons.” I hope they have a dog they can love as simply and sweetly and as much as I did.
