“Songs Known Together, Alone” out on Exploding in Sound Records on August 20th
This was recorded in October of 2020. These songs were performed (mostly) live and are reimagined versions of previously released material. Go here for credits, track-listing and info on pre-ordering.
This performance was filmed and the video of the entire record will be included with purchase of the record. Below are two videos from the album.
Along with a double LP and video of the performance, there are bundles available here including a poster, a t-shirt, and a roast made specially for this release from Quartertone Coffee.
Those bundles can be purchased here.
I plan on touring the lower 48 of the U.S. in support of this record. If there’s a spot you think might be a good fit for this kind of thing, please contact [email protected]

Pile - In the Corners of a Sphere-Filled Room
In the Corners of a Sphere Filled Room
On May 7th, we’re releasing a fully improvisational album. There are 14 tracks but there are no “songs” on it. This is a collection of noise we made intermittently from December 2018 to January 2021, strung together to make a little under an hour of music that we think sounds somewhat cohesive.
Much of this record was tracked during the “Green and Gray” session. In addition to the band, contributions were made by Elisabeth Fuchsia (viola) Jane Scarpantoni (cello), and Kevin S. McMahon (guitar).
It was recorded at Marcata Recording by Kevin S. McMahon. Overdubs were tracked by Alex Molini. The tape loops were made by Chappy Hull. And it was mixed and mastered by Alex Molini. The artwork is by Stephanie Lane Gage.
The album will be available on our bandcamp site to purchase for $5 and it’ll also be available to stream with video accompaniment via our YouTube Channel.
The name of the album is "In the Corners of a Sphere-Filled Room"

Updates.
(1) Thank you / Year End Newsletter.
(2) 2019 Chicago Show.
(3) Live at Third Man LPs.
(4) Magic Isn’t Real Live Stream.
(5) Releases 2021.
(1) Thank you / Year End Newsletter.
Hello, everyone. I apologize if you’re getting this e-mail unsolicited. If you don’t ever want to hear from the likes of me again you can just click the ‘unsubscribe’ button at the bottom.
First, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has helped support us this past year. Also, in the interest of full disclosure, you all helped raise $6,117.50 for the Movement for Black Lives and $615 for Gideon’s Army.
(2) 2019 Chicago Show.
Jess Price (who filmed our videos for Firewood and Hair) and Samantha Marquette filmed one of our shows in Chicago from 2019. We’re going to premiere it on our YouTube channel this Saturday, January 30th at 5pm EST (or GMT-5). For those unable to watch it at that time, it’ll be available on the internet probably forever after.
(3) Live at Third Man LPs.
We got some more Live LPs from Third Man. 65 to be exact. These ones are on blue vinyl, of which there are 300 in total and were initially reserved for the people who attended the show on April 16th, 2017. However, these went unclaimed and were just sitting at their warehouse. We’ll be selling them on Friday, February 5th from our bandcamp site for $25 (same as Third Man was).
(4) Magic Isn’t Real Live Stream.
In the first half of April, we’re going to do a live stream to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Magic Isn’t Real featuring the 2010 - 2017 lineup (Matt Becker, Matt Connery, Kris Kuss, and Rick Maguire), playing the album in its entirety. More info (date, where to watch it, etc) will be announced soon.
(5) Releases 2021.
We have some things we’re working on for this year and next. We’ll have one release in May and one in September. One is 42 minutes of audio and one is 50 minutes of songs. Neither are a new full-length LP, but we’re working on that as well.
I’m also starting to plan a solo tour for the fall of 2021 around the United States. I understand this may be a pursuit based in wishful thinking but if it turns out to be smarter to cancel the whole thing, then I will. But if you know of any outdoor venues or places that might be suitable for me to play, feel free to drop a line to: [email protected].

COVID-19 (solo shows canceled)
Because of the pandemic, I'm canceling/postponing the solo shows. If you have tickets to the April 3rd at the Church of the Covenant, you'll be getting an email about it. I still have the church rented so on April 3rd I'll be livestreaming a solo performance from the Church of the Covenant in Boston, MA. I'll be streaming it from both instagram and facebook on April 3rd at 8:30pm. I, like many people, am losing a considerable amount of income by not being able to do the stuff I'm supposed to do. If you feel like donating some money for watching this livestream, I would be very grateful. I've been working hard on this set and I'm proud of it. If you'd like to donate, you can send money to the PayPal of [email protected] (send it to friends and family), or you can use this thing: paypal.me/pilemusic I'm going to be recording the show (both audio and visual) as well as doing audio recordings of solo performances. I'm going to release solo renditions of older songs (maybe some new songs also) at some point. Also, if you've been meaning to buy digital downloads of anything, that would also go a long way. You can buy them at pile.bandcamp.com If you'd like to buy any physical merchandise (https://pile.bandcamp.com/merch), that also helps but a couple things about that: 1. it's going to take me until mid-April to ship stuff. 2. Shipping stuff might spread the thing. In addition, I'm going to do a "Second Other Tape." It might be available in the fall. If there are any questions, you can email me at [email protected] Currently, our European tour for May and June is still scheduled.
Playing a solo show in Boston on Friday, April 3rd at the Church of the Covenant on Newbury St. You can get tickets here: https://bpt.me/4518178
