I talk alot about my interests on this blog but I can't accurately name and sort them into Fandom tags all the time if that makes sense. If I were to try to appreciate art in that way then I feel like I would be doing a disservice to both that singular piece of art since I would be treating it as a commodity and also to art as a whole since all art is based off other art inherently. All art is based on something else. No art is made in a vacuum.

reblogging again because good art deserves exposition, but also I need to get the demons out of my head before sleep.

while prison is obviously not a nice place to be, imagine being in Niall's state and being locked up in the psych ward. you are terrified to the point of your mind giving up on you, thinking and doing things so irrational that you almost kill yourself by trying to feel safer. and then you get locked in an unfamiliar place where people force you to stop doing things you are convinced are helping you not get killed. Niall was scared of being watched, and guess what? now they are watching him for real, all the time. and taking notes on how he behaves. making him take medication. and he is surrounded by people with serious mental issues. do you realize that there is no way to separate most of the patients in the psych ward? one can be terrified and overwhelmed by others, while some spend days yelling and getting into their space. did you know that most of the time you have a roommate and no one is asking if you want to or are okay with it? the system is severely underfunded now, how bad was it twenty, thirty years ago?

and then we have the issue of Niall's fears being real!!! and no one is believing him!!! and convincing him that he's delusional, and all he has to do is accept the reality with the help of these little pills (how was he supposed not to get addicted at some point? pills are pills). god!

If I think too much about Niall's genuine delusions being hard to completely detangle from things that are real and true, like not just when he's *in* it but on the other side where Everything he says and feels is a little bit suspect and crazy-sounding, I just get so fucked up, man.

When I think about the nature of treatment that is no doubt well-meaning but also insufficient and re-traumatizing. When I think about him only getting that treatment because he was doing Abnormal self-harm and had to verbalize his reasons for doing it, but then he got out and kept self-harming in more drug and sex-based ways that are easier to turn a blind or moralizing eye toward.

When I think about Ruben unironically showing more compassion over it than anyone else had, for a brief moment immediately after doing every horrible thing Niall was afraid he was gonna do the second they were in a room together again (including the one thing he for sure never said to anyone therapizing him ever), and frankly all of that was a little bit validating!!!
