MY ARMED MOTHERS (project research)

The project refers to the mother archetype and monumental history of Post-Soviet countries. It takes four biggest Mother-Motherland monuments of four countries: Russia (90 meters), Georgia (20 meters), Armenia (51 meters) and Ukraine (102 meters), and researches their historical, visual, social, cultural and spiritual parallels; and also their parallels with the contemporary world. The research is a follow-up of ‘Motherland is calling’ project.

SONGS OF MOTHERLAND

Series of risography prints. 6 prints. 300 x 205 mm. 4 colours.

The series is included in the ‘Motherland is calling’ project that researches eastern European ‘mother vs. motherland’ phenomenon. Songs of Motherland are based on illustrations of patriotic songs, the postcard series i grew up on. Original illustrations by V.I.Mironov are based on the Palekh miniature. Palekh is a Russian folk handicraft, first appeared in the Palekh village, is based on a long local history of icon painting.

MOTHERLAND IS CALLING #1

The very first experiments with "motherland", my first multi-plates etchings, these two prints are now participating in the 9th International Douro Printmaking Biennial (Portugal).

Both prints are based on monuments. The first one is based on sculptures of soldiers from the “Motherland is calling” monumental ensemble in Volgograd (RU). The second print is picturing two heads of Motherland sculptures: Russian one (from Volgograd) and Ukrainian one (from Kiyev).

Want to see my etchings?

‘Want to see my etchings?’ originated from fascination in etching technique, its metaphysics and magic. Etching is a classical printmaking process that is rarely used in nowadays world full of digital and manipulated images. However, the technique has an ability to catch time, to document, to tell stories. But only in case the technique and material is appreciated and not being simply used for its reproductive qualities. Only then the magic happens.

Studying abilities and flexibilities of etching, I’ve created a visual essay based on my research of the technique as a new language in my practice.

‘Want to see my etchings?’ started in May 2016 from two months work-study phase in Ukraine, where I’ve visited several printmaking artists and a healer. The project continued as an experimental based two months residency period at AGA LAB in Amsterdam.

The first presentation of the process and results of this research will be shown at the Bookstore Space 12 November to 4th December.
