Health and Safety in the Event Production Industry
A few months ago, I finished writing a research paper entitled (take a deep breath):
What is the attitude towards the subjective nature of interpretation of health and safety legislation in the events industry?
Someone clearly fell asleep whilst reading it, felt bad and gave me a first. So I'll be immortalised in a dusty filing cabinet in the corner of the LIPA LRC. If you would like to quote it, include it, otherwise reference it, found it genuinely interesting or would like to have a controlled argument about it, feel free to contact me.

And once again, it's Production week #LSC14
A few people might have caught on that I've been on tour recently, the band have released some new material so you can hear what my life has sounded like for the last month or so.

BRB, Placement.
Righto.. been a while. A lot of expectation over the last three months, career affirming, life changing, light- at-the-end-of-the-tunnel seeing; not sure. Anyhow.. I wrote something in the middle of it all then distilled it.. here it is:
My whole class are on placements around the UK and actually world in various arts related companies. Some rather exotic, some less so. I will be spending my time at Stagetex, an AV hire company based near Liverpool Airport.
Under the self proclaimed title "Project and Warehouse Assistant" I did what can only be termed as 'a bit of everything'. Stagetex hire out equipment for events and often staff to set up and operate it. Occasionally they'll do a full production.. normally in conferencing or awards, once or twice some music. Also big in the Christian market.. different.
Spending the time at the company was a learning curve, surprisingly on a social level in particular. I tend to know people for a little while before I really start to get on with them which causes a bit of an issue in these sorts of environments; I'm awful at small talk.
I got to grips much better with the production process and all the aspects needed to technically and logistically service an event but my knowlege of technical equipment hasn't improved much. I can use Yamaha LS sound desks now, occasionally comes in handy. If someone would like to give me a crash course in LX fixtures and control or Live mixing I'll repay them in roast dinners and beer.
In short, I don't think the company had real gap required to facilitate the need for an intern but even then I never really had the opportunity to prove myself early on so never felt like I was trusted; felt like I was getting under peoples feet an awful lot. Walked out at the end shrugging regularly about about how much good it has actually done.
SO I finished that early and thanks to the fabulous Assistant Company Manager at Birmingham Royal Ballet @laurenhawke I spent a cool couple of weeks doing some LX work on The Nutcracker at Hippodrome, Birmingham. The most theatre-y thing I've done for a while, reinforced it's not really what I want to end up doing but I wouldn't turn down doing it again by any means. Thanks to @callumbright for putting me up too.
My arena work has also seen me doing some HR, more recruiting, managing payroll etc. Bit different - enjoying it.
And now I'm off on 4 months of wishing I was back in my steelies while I cry my way though a dissertation. No work booked in, great.
Available for casual technician and production management work from now 'till May. [email protected]
