Greetings!

Wow, there’s a lot of you recently. Maybe I should do a quick “me at a glance” thing so you know what you’ve signed up for?

Welcome! I’m Cynlan, or R. B. LeMoyne. (If you know my government name: keep it secret, keep it safe.) Pronouns are he/they, and I’m a bi-romantic gray asexual. I’m also polyamorous and live with my partner and his husband.

When I’m not editing dubbing scripts or subtitles, I love running and playing tabletop games! I’m currently running a Strixhaven 5e campaign using Tales of the Valiant rules, but my first love will always be Mage: The Ascension. I also love Star Wars, Marvel, DC Comics, Owl House, ATLA/LOK, Steven Universe, EPIC, Critical Role, and a whole lot more that would take me far too long to list but will inevitably pop up on my reblogs here. I write about my TTRPG characters over on my sideblog @nahirdinboon, I play/sing music sometimes, and I just set up a Ko-fi shop for folks to buy my battle maps.

Ways that sex is like a waffle maker:

Let's take a moment to appreciate just how amazing the title cards were for Batman the Animated Series.

Oh! I actually know what made these look so iconic!

The backgrounds for the entire series were done on black paper, a first for any animated show. It's Batman, which means everything is at night and incredibly dark. So, the majority of the backgrounds were going to be black anyways and using black paper would cut down on the time it took to create all of the backgrounds. Adding color over the black paper instead of the traditional method gave it a much more stylized look that helped make it iconic.

It also forced some other creative choices, such as using an airbrush to do all of the background art. During the early testing, they found that using an airbrush was easier to apply paint with than a paintbrush and that it looked better. Airbrushing let them be more experimental with painting techniques, such as the spattery fades you can see in the "Bane" and "Deep Freeze" title cards above or the soft, deeply shadowed face on "the Last Laugh." The overall effect of airbrushing on a black background is a much darker, moodier vibe than could be achieved with a traditional approach.

They cared very deeply about the art of the show and how they were going to create it. It wasn't just about the story or the character. In the words of co-creator Eric Radomski: "As opposed to making shows just to sell toys, we've made quality films."

Now that everyone is discussing Nolan's Odyssey movie, I feel like it's a good time to let non-Italians know that the production dumped plastic props into the Italian sea. Weirdly enough I could not find any article in English about it but it's a fucking problem nonetheless.

I will forever respect Animorphs for tricking kids who are just really into animals to read a book series by going “Hey you, you daydream about what it’s like to be a dolphin or a bird or a wolf? Have I got a book for you!” and then slowly radicalizing them with 50+ books of “There are no winners in war. Whatever ‘victory’ you perceive comes at the cost of sacrificing your own morals and killing the part of you that is human. So the amazing thing is that after the release of the last book, the author K. A. Applegate was interviewed and asked about why she wrote such a super dark ending for the series. She responded (I’m paraphrasing here, I read this when I was like 11) “This is what happens when kids are forced into war. There are no fairytale endings for them. And if that upsets you, then go to the polls and vote to prevent this from happening to real children.”

I got to ask her about that rebuttal years later at a book signing event for her newer One and Only series. She laughed and said that her publisher had no idea she would say that, and if they knew they probably would not have let her do so. But she genuinely meant what she said and was proud it left an impression that lasted 20+ years.

Support authors with real morals, guys. It’s not hard.

This is one of my favourite lines in the Kyoshi novels because it completely reframes who Kyoshi is.

People love reducing her to “the violent Avatar,” but that’s not what Lao Ge is saying. He’s saying Kyoshi is what happens after every peaceful option has failed.

She isn’t diplomacy. She isn’t politics. She isn’t compromise.

She is the point where diplomacy has already died.

“There is no escalation of hostilities beyond her” isn’t saying Kyoshi enjoys violence. It’s saying that if the Avatar herself has decided to intervene, you’ve already reached the absolute limit. There is nothing left to negotiate.

It’s also why I think people misunderstand Kyoshi so often. Throughout the novels she repeatedly tries to reason with people, show mercy, and restore balance without unnecessary bloodshed. But once she concludes that someone cannot be reasoned with, she acts decisively.

Kyoshi isn’t the first step. She’s the last.
