what does the wedding mean for evermore long pond studio session
A cat took to the stage during the final scene of a Romeo and Juliet ballet performance by the Imperial Russian Ballet Company in Turkey's Izmir on Wednesday (June 10).
every fleetwood mac documentary i've ever watched is like "the band was at the height of their success, enjoying the fame rolling in from their #1 hit 'i know about the other woman, lindsey'. however, nobody could have sensed the tension brewing between members."
"the group initially disbanded immediately after the release of the single 'well get the fuck out if you're going to be like that', leaving thousands of fans shocked."
people will say “they’re only friends” and then show me two people who would crawl through broken glass to hear the other laugh once. two people who have memorized each other’s coffee orders, fears, childhood stories, and emergency contacts. two people who would haunt each other’s houses as ghosts. be serious.
Just an FYI—the original intention of this post was to challenge the way people say only friends, as though friendship is somehow lesser than other forms of love. As if being deeply known, cherished, and chosen by another person could ever be a small thing. Normalize profound platonic love. Some of the most fulfilling, transformative, and enduring relationships we will ever have are friendships. 🫶🏼
wiping my cheeto dust hands on your shirt. i want to build a beautiful life with you
But the auditors of the Iliad knew that the death of Hector would be but a brief joy to Achilles, and the death of Achilles but a brief joy to the Trojans, and the destruction of Troy but a brief joy to the Achaeans. Thus violence obliterates anybody who feels its touch. It comes to seem just as external to its employer as to its victim. And from this springs the idea of a destiny before which executioner and victim stand equally innocent, before which conquered and conqueror are brothers in the same distress.
— Simone Weil, “The Iliad, or the Poem of Force”
What shocks me besides the misogyny people have been throwing at Iga since Maja’s run is also how eager they seem to discard her. Imagine the best player of the decade representing your country and doing it with so much pride and care and all you have for her is contempt and disrespect. Like we’re talking about someone who went around behind the scenes at this year’s Australian Open and told everybody who would listen how joyful and proud she was that Poland finally won the United Cup. And instead of being happy that there’s now two amazing and wonderful players being so successful it’s like half the country is out to downgrade Iga and crown Maja as their new favourite thing. Idk it’s just so sad to see them being pitted against each other like this and have people use Maja’s success as a reason to shit on Iga, especially considering their shared history.
iga is being held to a uniquely punishing standard. we’re talking about a six-time grand slam champion and world no. 1 for 125 weeks getting dragged while her own childhood friend’s extraordinary underdog run is being used as a stick to beat her with.
what makes it especially uncomfortable to watch is that polish media has spent years struggling with how to frame a woman who doesn’t fit its preferred mould of femininity. iga has been criticised for being too serious, too guarded, too awkward, too intense, too emotional, and sometimes not emotional enough. after a while, people start treating her reserve as a personality defect rather than what it actually is: a completely rational response to being repeatedly burned by the same media ecosystem.
the joy around maja is real and deserved. her run was beautiful. but maja’s success should be a celebration of maja. instead, parts of the conversation have immediately become about what she supposedly has that iga doesn’t.
iga has given everything to polish tennis. she put poland on the tennis map in a way no player before her managed. for years she carried expectations, scrutiny, and national pride on her shoulders. and yet the moment someone more accessible, more naturally open with the media, and frankly easier for people to project onto comes along, a portion of her own country seems ready to trade her in.
there is truly nothing worse than a player’s own country’s media. the rest of the world tends to judge you by what you’ve achieved. media at home often judges you by how closely you’ve matched the version of you they imagined.
if i were sisyphus i would simply refuse to do that
one must imagine sisyphus unionizing
