Can I ask how you write so much? (Well, I guess I just did.) In the fourish years since you began posting on your AO3 you've written 69 (LOL) fics, while I've only written three--and not long fics, either. I know it's bad to compare your work to others, but I take writing seriously, and part of that means I would like to improve! So, any advice?
hi anon!! i'd love to have some good advice for you but the honest truth is that in the time i was writing the most i simply just Happened to be very inspired by byler, and that plus the fact that i was pretty lonely and depressed and actively avoiding having a Life made it easy to spend hours a day thinking and writing about fictional people lol. (not to be all "the obsession faded when i got medicated", but...) what i will say though is that i've always sort of used fanfic as a space to be creative without worrying too much about the end result. the guidelines for success in fic are much looser than in original writing, since you already have the characters and an audience who is invested in them and you can post whatever you want whenever you want, so you can experiment with different writing styles and techniques in what is (hopefully) a low-pressure space. i genuinely think i've improved a ton as a writer from just writing about the same two people falling in love over and over for the past like. four years wow. so if you have the time and energy to practice, i think that's one of the best ways to improve.
also, for real, don't compare yourself to others. quality over quantity baby!!! three fics is a perfectly respectable number and if you're proud of them you deserve to be. most people don't even try :)
you are not immune to inventing an arbitrary set of rules that only you have to adhere to
i’m going to be really honest with you guys i think the tendency to read the absolute worst possible intentions into every action you don’t agree with is getting too automatic and it’s eating you from the inside out
