“well enough alien talk — ‘cause they’re real, to be clear…” he sighs, staring up at the sky, at first because she seems to be having a good enough time doing it, and then because woah, there really are stars? or are those manmade satellites? he steals a glance at her, debating whether to broach the question that’s been sitting at the tip of his tongue for some time now, at least ever since her joking statement said in passing earlier. ‘serious’ matters aren’t typically in their repertoire, still he ultimately decides to ask anyways. “aren’t you glad you’re talking to me again?”

yuri avoids his gaze, feeling warm under it. she doesn’t have the complexion for blushing, one of her better qualities. “it’s fine,” she answers quietly. it’s not a lie, her ankle feels fine now. she had been very aware of it leaving her dorm in the morning but forgot about it soon enough, only remembering to be scared of cramps in the down moments through the day. but it’s the rare instance where jinyoung’s got a point and yuri doesn’t do well on the hot seat. she makes a show out of rolling her eyes and nodding. “alright mom, i’ll keep you up to date.”

things are much more enjoyable when it’s jinyoung’s turn to squirm, wriggling in the corner into which she shoves him. her attention is fully on him when he’s firing retort after retort, pretending to contemplate them. she looks down her shoulder, inspecting her own outfit for a moment before she says, “well, i don’t fumble, so that only leaves…” now she lifts her eyes back to him, one of her eyebrows raised.

it’s not entirely fair. both blaming jinyoung for the hot and cold nature of their relationship and addressing it so coyly after walking out of his life for months. but it’s a good time, stoking the fire and waiting to see who gets burned first. her smile denounces liquid courage but her clear-eyed stare is the only evidence jinyoung has that she knows exactly what she’s doing. he pushes on with jokes, at which she fakes a scowl, but she likes the expansive comfort zone humor provides for them. it was only jokes too when they’d flirt anytime either of them had a significant other that was out of earshot, always games best played in private.

“see, this is why you’re fumbling. all the negging. it doesn’t really work, you know.” she considers stretching the joke further and asking how he would rate her, but doesn’t say anything. she is suddenly not all too confident that her good mood would withstand an answer she wouldn’t like, and then the joke would be way past overstaying its welcome. her smile widens and she touches her cheek to her shoulder, kittenish. “not on a 10.”

when jinyoung tenderly cuts the silence that forms between them, she turns to look at him with a vague expression. the moonlight washes his face a pearlescent blue and softens his features, obscuring the grooves and bumps in them and making him look almost two-dimensional. it’s as if, were she to reach out and touch him right now, her hand would submerge past his skin and close around nothing.

“yeah, i am,” she says. memories of the past semester blink in and out of her mind with practiced ease, like a movie she’s seen a few times too many. she watched him play a few times that year and vibrated with every goal he’d score, but no longer came down to greet him like she used to. it was a wall she built on her own overnight, wordlessly shutting him out. now it seems cruel, it sounds like the actions of someone cold and distant, someone she doesn’t know. a crease appears between her eyebrows and she directs her gaze overhead again, letting the words she’d been holding to her chest ease out of her lips. “i’m sorry. it wasn’t right to do that, i wish i had any excuse.”

"do we need to get you to a medic?... or, do you want to wait until this guy is done performing?" he asks. he realizes it might sound selfish, though; like he is helping her, but on his own time. like he doesn't want to miss the performance. quickly, he defends: "i don't care for him, personally. it just seems like... you do?"

she fixes him with a big-eyed gaze when he mentions medics, only breaking away from it to look at the stage and then back at him, saying ‘oh’ and ‘um’ very fast. somehow, he reads through her subtle hints of reluctance, adjusting to her reaction with equal awkwardness. she chuckles, suddenly feeling too seen and brushing hair away from her face for something to do with her hands.

“i do wanna finish his set, yeah,” yuri admits. people pleasing isn’t among her strongest instincts, but she’s overcome with a sycophantic urge to accommodate him, to explain herself. she feels like an inconvenience, still vexed about having been seen in such a helpless state, and he’s being so understanding it makes her all the more embarrassed. it’s almost enough to completely divert her attention from the pain in her ankle, pulsating duller now but still making itself known. “would it be terrible of me to ask you to stay until it’s over?”

one of her hands rests on mouse’s shoulder, near her face, and her satchel dangles from the other. this seems to her to be a decent enough compromise between her need for support and her supposed respect for his personal space, freeing up his arm to his own discretion. she glances at him with a curl on the corner of her mouth, cocking her head away from him slightly. “only if you can withstand listening to evidently subpar music for another twenty minutes, that is.”

"hello? yuri?" she says as she picks up — her voice a touch more frantic than usual. "are... are you okay?" her voice catches in her throat as she asks the question, and yerim finds herself unable to maintain her usual composure. "please tell me you're okay."

yuri’s voice catches in her throat. she sits there for a few seconds, slack-jawed, holding her phone to her face with unnecessary effort until the screen glues to her cheek. something wet touches the back of her curled hand and she realizes she’s crying, tears cascading down her face and onto her lap like a downpour. she tries not to sob into the phone but it’s no use. yerim’s voice instantly dissolves whatever was holding her together and she’s coming undone all at once. for just a moment, her mind is rid of all thoughts of agatha or yikyung or the dreadful night she’s been through. there’s only a relief so intense it aches in her muscles, like struggling for air.

“i don’t– i don’t know,” she says after a while, gasping for air and hiding her face in her free hand with such force it’s as though she fears it might detach from her skull. beneath the mounds of violent emotion ravaging through her, she doesn’t want to alarm yerim. she sighs and draws in a deep breath, looking around her room to ground herself enough to talk.

“can we meet? i know it’s late,” her voice is tiny and coarse but it sounds less like warbled nonsense. her back sags against her chair and she breathes through her mouth, glancing out her window at a cloudless, black sky hanging over tree tops swaying languidly. she hopes she isn’t asking for too much, that picking up her call wasn’t as generous as yerim would feel tonight. her knuckles rub at her eyes, pulling the sleeves of her shirt to dry them. “i was just wondering if you’d meet me at the park.”

haebaragi park is a midpoint between their dorms, something yuri noticed when she picked up her routine of jogging early in the morning after the move. it had felt mildly profound to realize that, as though her life hadn’t changed as much as it might have looked on first glance. waiting on yerim’s answer with her legs pressed to her chest, she hopes that’s true. “it’s ok if you can’t.”

yuri’s eyes are still not all the way open. heat emanates from the flat iron and envelops her face until a sheen of sweat forms around her mouth, her hair crackling softly when she clamps it down and pulls, fingers slick with thermal protection oil. she swallows a yawn and pauses her work only to take sips of the matcha drink she was pointedly instructed not to take from the minibar. sunlight begins to filter meekly between parted curtains and through the foggy windows, but it’s still dark enough out for them to have all the lights on in the room.

the tournament is set to start in two hours, their bus leaves in one and they need to assemble at the lobby fifteen minutes ahead of that. the entirety of debate’s busan trip is spent in repeating loops of transience, moving from transportation to transportation until they’re back in seoul. yuri barely feels like they ever left, holed up in the hotel and busy with too much practice and too many rides.

“i wish we’d stay long enough to go out at least once.” she looks at eunwoo’s reflection in the mirror with a dejected expression, as if she could do anything about it. yuri suspects she could make it happen if she just manages to sell the group on the idea, but right now it’s mostly wishful thinking and her mind trying to grasp at a motivation to not go back to bed. her fingers feel down her hair for any missed spots before reaching up to unclip another section. “i wanna go see the sea. what’s the point of coming to busan and staying inside all the damn time?” the point is debate, of course, but that hardly convinces yuri.

her eyes find eunwoo’s in the mirror again and a conspiratorial smile appears on her face, the sleepy puffiness and the flat iron heat making her cheeks look like tomatoes. “it’d be nice, wouldn’t it? you and minjoon, at the beach, after the sun’s set?” this is uncharted territory in the short history of her friendship with eunwoo, if ‘friends’ is even what they are. they’ve gone from barely exchanging words to discussing mostly debate and the debate club and debate topics, which has carried them through enough conversations that they could share a room without issue. but even as the words leave her mouth, she wonders if directly addressing whatever tension exists between her and minjoon is a few levels above the kind of relationship they have.

yuri takes another drink of matcha, wiping the condensation clinging to her fingertips on her skirt. she can always blame it on the drowsiness.

Do you think your friend group could ever get back together?

for months now yuri can't settle on an answer for that. sometimes she thinks it obvious their fates will cross again, then she can't stomach the thought of associating with them in the future. the days in which the end of their friendship feels like a blessing blur into the ones where it's only ever been a curse. she likes to think she's over it, over them, but fears that's more vanity than it is genuine growth. that's the worst of it, having to investigate every instinct and place it on a self actualization scale to reach an adequate quota of sophistication, as if she could calculate the objective metric that will reassure her she's above it.

she types and deletes a few answers, staring past her phone. she aims to be diplomatic without groveling, and eventually decides on a good enough sentiment.

i'll always wish everyone that was a part of my life the best & i like to think we're moving onto better things regardless of whether we doing it together or not. of course, the door is always open for anyone who's a good presence in my life! ❤️‍🩹

as a rule, yuri isn’t the type to loathe orientation week. she enjoys the conviviality and the liveliness, it’s a nice enough diversion from monotony before everyday life resumes as usual. true to what a first impression of her might give off, she’s a pack animal and has fun working a spotlight. this year, however, wasn’t turning out very typical. all she remembers doing for the past few days is feigning normalcy and forcing herself to have a good time. if only she’d play the part, she thought, the unreality of her new life would dissolve into complete banality. she’s enamored with the idea of taking life into your own hands.

the emotional load is the part she anticipated, but the physical symptoms of the effort catch her unprepared. her entire body aches as though her muscles had carried the metaphysical weight of her despair day all week. and now she’s nursing a monster of a headache, drilling into the back of her skull all the way out her eyes. she waits for the painkiller to hit, eagerly hopes for it, and sits back in the midzone of the field bleachers. her face is obscured in the shade of her baseball hat. enough people are hanging around that she’d hidden in plain sight, but they spread thinly across the field to allow her some sense of privacy.

tears fill her eyes every now and then until she blinks them away, maintaining her posture. it never comes to the point where she’s truly crying, she’s too horrified by the mental image of herself crying in public to relax enough for it. it’s a prickling in her eyes until she feels them dry out again. the release of the tension alleviates the headache, if only for just a few moments. so does the smoking.

as a rule, yuri isn’t a smoker. there had been enough occasions where she’d tagged along smokers and shared one or two cigarettes, and that is the best guess as to why she’s been turning to it this week. the reiteration is what she finds soothing: lifting the cigarette to her lips, taking a slow drag, feeling the burn in her chest until it becomes tight, dangling it between her fingers to watch the wisps of smoke fade in predictable patterns, and repeat. it goes on and on and on until she’s out, and then she just has to light up the next one. the tiny bodies scurrying in the distance turn into gray blurs. when she feels especially hopeless, she thinks this is all there is left, which leaves her no reason not to do it. barely a week into the year, addiction as a concept is no longer a mystery to her.

reiko walks into view like a ray of light searing through a gray sky. the weekend had been packed and was starting to take its toll on yuri. when she first hears of a last minute party happening in the rec center, she’s walking out of the woodz set, feeling every second of yeonchella weighing on her body and dreading a hungover monday at her internship. it’s a hard sell.

but a lot can happen in the walk from the tracks to her dorm, apparently. the noise is the first thing that registers when she approaches the building, echoes ricocheting off the cavernous structure and gushing out the main entrance like a torrent. a waft of a strong chemical smell hits her nose, the combination of chlorine and alcohol nearly coming across as clinical from where she stands. she thinks about her bed once more but lets peer pressure run its course, never finding it particularly hard to allow herself to be steered into an obviously bad decision.

that is when she needs to see reiko the most, and there she is – angelic, the singular good omen to reassure her the night isn’t about to turn out half as bad as it promises. yuri believes reiko's path only crosses hers when she needs it the most, and that could be why they don't try to circumvent fate with wordly conveniences. settling a day to hang out feels like scheduling an appointment when it comes to her, it would only rob their chance encounters of their particular mysticism. yuri’s smile is wide and warm as she closes the distance between them, wrapping her arms around the girl as if trying to revert all the time spent apart.

“what’s been up with you?” she says after establishing how much she misses reiko and how great she looks. it’s a ritual they follow every time they meet, lamenting never having time to meet and fantasizing about a perfect life where their schedules would fall into sync. she pushes out her lower lip when she pulls back from the hug, hands running down reiko’s arms to close around her fingers. “i kept hoping i’d run into you the entire weekend, i was beginning to lose hope.”

“hey. you believe in aliens?” evidently his brain is quick to move on and completely inept at filtering out intrusive thoughts. “i mean, they’re one hundred percent out there,” he says with utmost certainty, forming a square frame with his fingers and raising it to the sky to peer through. a much nicer and easier view than these clunky telescopes, if you asked him. “real question is whether they’re down here, with us.” from just his tone, you’d think he were giving some awfully profound dissertation on the origin of the universe, instead of some vocalizing some stupid shower thought probably best left to himself. “who would you say is most likely to be an alien at this school? lotta good choices," he asks with a slight wiggle of his brows.

“wow, are you negging me?” yuri smirks with a scoff, glancing at him sideways. “very cute. i’m just starting to remember why i stopped talking to you.” it’s a careless joke that lingers for just a moment too long. yuri shifts on her feet; maybe jinyoung doesn’t even notice, but she certainly feels a slight unease creep in on her that she’s eager to dissolve. she heaves out a sigh, dramatic, and walks to him struggling with the telescope again, bending sideways to match his eye level, voice barely above a whisper. “you’d only ever be interested in the stars in peggy gou’s eyes, of course.” and she pulls away just as quick as she’d dipped in, making a note to not let him near her when baekhyun takes the stage the next day lest he feels inspired to retribute the jokes.

her hopes never go up as jinyoung’s energy spikes and then depletes within a span of minutes, but a part of her is disappointed the adventure resolves without any stars or planets in sight. she does linger behind for a minute, finally trying a few of the buttons on the pad as a last resort – they do something, smudges shifting in her view with a second or two of promise, but not much.

it doesn’t take all too long for yuri to take the vacant spot on the blanket, sitting in the direction opposite to his. her fingers reach down to her ankle absent-mindedly, the memory of her cramps from the previous day still looming large among her thoughts. she massages the muscles tenderly, fingertips rubbing into the skin for a few seconds until she feels satisfied, taking her water bottle out of her bag. the medics had told her dehydration was a common silent cause of muscle cramps, so she’d been holding onto the bottle like it’s solid gold the entire day. after pouring enough water into her mouth to satiate her thirst, she offers it to jinyoung.

“i don’t know if i’m sold on aliens being real, but if they were prowling around campus, my first guess would be… you?” she grins down at him, low hanging fruit is best eaten fresh. she holds up her fingers, enumerating: “suspiciously ignorant of space-related paraphernalia, fumbles a 10 taking you out on a romantic stargazing getaway, and everyone knows the most likely culprit is the one who tries to avoid suspicion by asking the question first.” she’s slightly mortified to find her debate voice surface in her tone, but at least jinyoung would be the last person to notice it. “after you, at least half the polaris guys, naturally. i don’t think that needs an explanation.”

a sigh escapes her chest nearly of its own accord. she finally stretches out and rests her left ankle atop her right one, leaning back on her hands. the prickle of grass and weed leaves on her palms is barely softened by the thin fabric. above her, the vastness of the night sky unfolds itself to her gaze like a revelation, it never fails to take her breath away to see it unrestrained by the typical frame of an endless maze of buildings closing in on the view from every direction. stars seem to shine brighter out here than on campus, or maybe that’s just what she wants to believe.

“and your picks? do you recognize your secret brethren among us?” before he can even think of an answer, she cuts in: “saying me is unoriginal and boring at this point, so go there at your own risk.”

the shape these things are taking, with @goodbyejoon

it had been a long day, and it keeps on stretching as it rolls into the evening. they had left the hotel when the sun was barely out in the morning, and by 7 a.m. the group was congregated in the hall of busan national university for the debate tournament, sweating in the unexpected warm weather under their identical forest green jackets. the previous day was filled with the commute and too much practice, for some people the two had overlapped – she had heard minjoon argue against the extinction of conscription from seats away and felt incredibly lucky to have been given a ticket that placed her away from his field of view.

the hard work bore fruit, though. for the past two hours, the team shared rounds of bulgogi and soju to celebrate a close victory against the house team. yuri hadn’t been selected for the finals, which agreed just fine with her after having been sorted for an uncomfortable majority of rounds. it was one of the topics they had used for practice, so the team was vibrating with anticipation when the speakers walked in. minjoon lit up the auditory on his turn, and that couldn’t have made anyone in the team happier, certainly not least minjoon himself.

the place is a short walk’s distance from their hotel, the kind of upscale restaurant that puts too much effort into mimicking casual dining. the group starts breaking off as the bottles mount on the table, most of them heading back to the hotel for an early night ahead of their departure for seoul in the following morning. the chairs gradually empty out around her until she finds herself sitting across from minjoon, who’s still basking in the glory of a hard earned win. they both say they should head back now and neither takes the initiative to follow through.

yuri feels strangely energized. it could be the rush of a victory or the food settling in her stomach, but she’s far from tired. she picks up a half filled bottle of soju, her left free hand touching her forearm as she pours minjoon a shot, filling her own glass right after with less ceremony. maybe this will be her last one for the night, she can tell she’s teetering on the edge of actual drunkenness and feels strongly that she cannot cross that line. getting very drunk in a new city with the debate club doesn’t sound very appealing.

she raises her glass and waits for him to match the gesture before she takes a sip, nose still tingling from the alcohol after the entire evening. her lips taste of grease and a mild sting of gochujang.

“i actually wanted to ask you something,” she says. it had been obvious she wanted to talk to him, maybe even for days now, but the opportunity never came. her elbows rest on the table and she plays with her fingers, hiding her mouth behind them as her gaze sets on minjoon.

“you’ve been very nice to me lately.”

it’s a strange accusation to level at someone, but minjoon would know it to be perfectly warranted. she doesn’t have to tell him that their relationship hadn’t been warmer than strictly cordial, club colleagues working toward a mutual goal. this year brought a lot of changes, and minjoon had been the one she had expected the least. it is quite nice to be privy to a side of him she never knew to even exist, yuri didn’t imagine minjoon knew being nice was an option in human interaction. it's all very novel and fun. but she isn’t stupid.

“am i your charity case for the year?” the thought of it visibly amuses her, eyes twinkling with a smile behind her hands. she isn’t offended by the idea, but she can no longer afford to idly sit by as people indulge in their power plays if they plan on using her as a pawn.

"are you okay?" he shouts over the music. looking directly at her, though, he can tell that she isn't. there's something in her expression, pain or fear or nausea. he can't read it well, but it doesn't look good. someone bumps into his back; he watches someone else narrowly miss yuri. "what happened?" he asks instead. she's clearly not okay, so the next step is to figure out what he can do to help, or how to get help.

when asked what’s wrong, it’s yuri’s instinct to answer: nothing. she would do it now too, but when she opens her mouth she only hears herself cry out instead. her leg burns below her knee. it’s almost worse to have someone watch her in this state, witnessing it. it makes it all the more real, and her heart sinks further. she avoids meeting her rescuer’s eyes, trying to stretch out her leg in the tiny extra amount of space from the crowd he provides.

“i’m fine,” she says through gasps of air, pretending she isn’t aware of how unconvincing she sounds. “i just need to stand still for a moment, i think.” what she means is that she just needs to be ok. what she needs is for this to not be an injury that will keep her on bench for the season.

she eyes his offered arm and holds onto it with a deep breath, pulling in closer to be heard over the music. she hesitates, almost defeated when she admits, “i need help getting up if you don’t mind, my foot hurts a little. i don’t know what happened.”

once he pulls her off the floor and she can balance herself on her good foot, leaning against his shoulder to stand her ground as people start circling back in around them, her head whips toward the stage wistfully. she doesn’t really know the song, a b-side she can’t place in the discography, but the sting of having missed it in such a stupid way. she thinks about touching her left foot to the ground to test it, but decides to wait a while longer to do that experiment.

now that she’s not longer risking being trampled by boozed students, standing somewhat firm, she can finally turn her face to see who’d come to her aid. it surprises her when she recognizes the boy.

“oh, you’re mouse,” she almost says it like she’s informing him of the fact. yuri is not great with faces, but when the new guy in debate says they can call him mouse, the memory sticks. “i’m sorry,” she says, but immediately realizes that’s not the right thing to say. she’s apologizing for inconveniencing him, for having such an embarrassingly public moment of weakness someone felt it necessary to aid her. she’s mortified, but she is aware that is a nuance people wouldn’t pick up on. her head shakes and she puts on a smile, her hand squeezing his forearm gently, “i mean, thank you.”

“i don’t understand why it’s not working... i bet this thing is really expensive too.” on cue, it only takes him a few seconds more to nearly knock over the whole thing once — and then twice — but he somehow manages to keep it all together. with an exaggerated sigh, he takes his unwieldy hands off the telescope, dropping them at his side like a kid who’s been told not to touch anything at the store. “i don’t know. what if this is a scam? is it even possible to see stars from seoul? i thought light pollution was a thing.”

she’s happy to let jinyoung take over, pulling the collar of her jacket flush against her neck to shield from the gust of wind. it’s amusing, watching him coordinate the proportions of his body almost by the inch to find his way around the telescope, like a kangaroo reaching down for a shrub. yuri smiles, knowing he’s too preoccupied to notice, until his foot slides down the grass and he’s jumping to recover balance.

“careful,” she doesn’t mean to sound reprimanding but it comes out that way. she doesn’t know how far along the recovery process jinyoung is, it’d been a long time since the last time they had talked. but they never discussed it more than what was strictly necessary even when they’d talk every other day. she never liked to bring it up; from her own experiences with injuries, she feels like stubborn delusion goes further than sympathy. her eyes move away from his knee like she’d never spared it a glance. when it’s clear he looks fine, she guises her concern with a breathy chortle. “no wonder you’re so slow on the field, balancing that big head between your shoulders.”

it seems like he isn’t ready to give up on their little pursuit quite as fast as she is, so yuri steps back and lets him pretend to know what he’s doing. she doesn’t make for much of a cheerleader, though that doesn’t come as news to him. she’s as encouraging now as she is cutting through his dribbles and flipping him off over her shoulder when he sets off after her. her arms fold over her chest and she nods sarcastically, saying things like ‘oh naturally,’ and ‘why didn’t i think of that’.

“not much of a scam if it’s free,” she points out with an arched eyebrow. “they must be able to work these out one way or another, or else they wouldn't have an astronomy club. and i’m pretty sure there is one.” she doesn’t sound very sure.

the telescope is holistically impartial to her layman curiosity when she approaches it again. the buttons and knobs don’t look any easier to decipher on second glance, and when she looks into the earpiece again she finds jinyoung’s tinkering hadn’t amounted to much of a difference. she whips out her phone and searches ‘how to turn on a telescope’, quickly realizing none of the thumbnails match the model in front of her. a common thread surfaces on the naver previews.

“it must be the lenses? we have to adjust the configuration of the lenses or something.” she wonders if modern telescopes even have lenses anymore, figuring they must because it wouldn’t make sense otherwise. the sleek pad attached to the main cylinder doesn’t offer any hints as to which of the keys would adjust any hypothetical lenses.

a sudden rush of impatience takes hold of her. she puts her hands on the back of her hips and looks around for another telescope, spotting a row of them in a short distance, all occupied. a line is forming behind them, sparsely illuminated by the gas fire pits.

“maybe we go there and wait in line? those are clearly working.” she turns to him while tucking fluttering strands of hair behind her ear, face squeezing with a slight flinch. a sliver of hesitation shakes her conviction; she’s not sure if wants to waste time in a line. this weekend is supposed to be an escape from bureaucracy. “does that sound boring?”

yuri needs yerim. she thinks it the second she lies down on her bed and becomes consumed by the thought. it had been true when they were continents apart and yerim’s absence weighed down on her chest at night until she gasped for air, sobbing into her pillow. and it is true now that they live minutes from each another but insist on conjuring another ocean between them.

she kicks off her sheets, too warm and suffocated. she had hoped the exhaustion would have her asleep before she could sober up, but she's been lying for over an our with the flat of her back against the mattress, wide awake and agonizing. flashes of the night keep flooding her brain, misshapen, only halfway formed, drowning out most trains of thought until they all resemble despair. she tries to organize them and create a timeline of events that isn’t entirely humiliating, but they blur into one another and out of her control. her stomach lurches.

this is more pain than she can tolerate. she’d been a big girl all year, she’d toughed it out and gritted her teeth through everything. she had promised herself the only way out was up, became convinced that she’d be laughing about all this soon enough. even now, that mantra starts echoing in her head and she’s on the brink of tears again. feeling this alone exhausts her.

she pulls herself up from her bed and sits by her desk, one foot curled around the edge of her seat, rotating the chair until her wall mirror is no longer in sight. her teeth chip the polish off the thumb’s nail as she turns her phone on again, guilt compounded for promising herself she wouldn’t touch the thing until the next morning.

notifications roll out as soon as the phone boots and she deletes them blindly, searching through her contacts until yerim’s name is all she can see on her screen. the last call they shared was back when she’d ended things with yikyung for the last time. yerim’s voice had been small and gentle, she sounded like she had been waiting for it but tried not to make it seem obvious. they had been mad at each other then, but yerim was the only one who she’d ever wanted to talk to.

yuri calls.

the phone starts ringing and she wonders if yerim already knows about it. it’s not the first time the thought crosses her mind, but now it resurfaces, ghostlike, punctuating every dull ring that burrows into her ear. if she knows about it, for how long? did she and agatha talk about it, was it amusing for them? is she in on it? yuri bends until her forehead is resting against her knee, pushing all the air out of her lungs until she’s fully deflated.

whatever ‘it’ is supposed to be.

paranoid half ramblings jump in and out of her consciousness as she tugs at the roots of her hair. she pictures herself hanging up and going back to her agony until dawn breaks, but she remains on the line. her need for yerim's company begins to ache in her, wedging itself in her gut like a muscle, well worn. she can't afford doubt now.
