Homieland vol.2 - Straight Razor
Meet Straight Razor, an artist and homie hidden in the darkness (photo by Butch Belair).
Omar Doom (aka Straight Razor) wears many hats. Should we introduce him at first as a night hawk producer whose love from giallo movies inspired him to go by Straight Razor, an actor you’ve already seen in Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ video, Tarantino’s movies such as Death Proof and Inglorious Basterds or someone who himself writes horror movies in his free time?
First things first, Omar Doom studied classical piano and violin from the age of 5, before spending his youth playing the drums in punk and hardcore bands and eventually switching to guitar and singing. Years later, he moved toward more industrial and electronic sounds – that can still be felt in his music, and provided couple of mixes, including awaited Halloween mixes. He then fronted Doomington, alongside DJs Stretch Armstrong and Eli Escobar but it is through his current project Straight Razor, that he can fully explores electronic and techno sounds — tinged with cinematic feeling, as you can hear on the dark yet mesmerizing “Whiskey & Ativan” and its female sensual vocals. He also supplied vocals for “VOICES”, a fearsome industrial-tinged techno track from Boston-born producer M|O|O|N aka Boy Stephen (yes the one on the comp).
Cinematic atmospheres are also an important feature in what he is listening to, including latest Timber Timbre album Hot Dreams, sometimes close to the soundtrack for a horror movie but counterbalanced by spaghetti western-vibe guitars. The song “Risk” written by Alexandra Savoir and Alex Turner and featured on HBO’s True Detective soundtrack, ranks high in his latest music selection, as he believes it would fit perfectly any of you romantic picnic in a cemetary. On the same soundtrack, he also enjoys switching to “My Least Favorite Life” by Lera Lynn, a soft, seductive yet gloomy song — written for a drug-addict character performing in a bar. You can now understand why he opted for his moniker Straight Razor, a weapon often featured in giallo movies (developed by directors such as Mario Bava or Dario Argento) where the straight razor is often the featured murder weapon.
One day, when he stepped out of the shadows, he met Brodi through his best friend Thee Mike B and has since lived a fairy tale bromance he poetically describes as an “unparalleled alliance, both boundless and eternal, beyond the grasp of the human mind”.
For Homieland vol.2, he went club with “The Adversary” while keeping his oath to the darkness — the voice you hear is of the late Anton Lavey, founder of the Church of Satan, speaking of his take of the name of Satan, “Satan is simply a word that means… The Accuser… The Opposition… The Adversary.” He remained pretty secret about his upcoming projects but horror movies are on their way and he promised us even more music for anyone who might need a soundtrack for their next downward spiral.
